To my knowledge, there are no octagon shaped foods–unless you count chocolates that come in an octagon shaped box.  However, there are definitely seven-sided foods.  Tourné potatoes were a rival to my sanity in cooking school.  Two inches long with seven perfectly rounded sides.  We weren’t allowed to blunt the ends.  They had to be perfectly pointed little oblong taters–nearly football shaped.  It still causes me physical pain to even think about them.  But they were beautiful.  Let’s stick with the octagon, though, like the one in this next Call.  Take a look…

The featured food at my house this week is Jona Gold apples ($.89/lb). Last month is was asparagus ($1.99/lb).  This whole month it has been apples, partly because of our proximity to an orchard, and partly due to price.  We’re heading toward Winter, and I’ll be eating $1 butternut squash for at least 2 months. It is all about eating what’s in season. It is cheaper, healthier, and yummier. Think of it as a seasonal treat.  This next Call is all about the upcoming season, and it’s a treat too!  Take a look…

I am fascinated by food fads.  Remember when jalapeno poppers were the newest trend?  I always wonder what the next trend will be and how a new “cutting edge” idea becomes a part of the main stream.  We are watching organic foods slowly become the norm, and the prices of organics are shrinking.  How long until the mainstream starts seeing more value in vegetarian, or even vegan, lifestyle choices.  This next show puts cutting edge together with art for a mainstream exhibit.  Maybe this one is for you…

Farm fresh eggs make me happy the same way daisies make others smile.  The only thing close to farm fresh is a Grade AA (found in upscale restaurants and better grocery stores).  Most of us eat Grade A eggs from the grocery store with flatish, lemony-yellow yolks, but a fresh egg typically has a bright golden yolk that stands tall when cracked.  Years ago, when my husband owned a hot dog shop called the Dog & Cow, he used to trade left over hot dogs (used as chicken feed) for fresh eggs.  The eggs had the wonderful aroma of garlic from gourmet hot dogs.  We KNEW what we were eating, ha.  The gallery in this Call also makes me happy with it’s sort of blatant in-your-face optimism and simplicity.  Take a look…
