Tuna & salmon are sometimes a person’s first introduction to food politics.  The “dolphin safe” label has been appearing on cans of tuna since the 1990s, helping consumers influence industry-wide changes in fishing methods. JUROR:  Dr. Deana Dartt Newton, a native Californian, is of Chumash ancestry. She has spent considerable time in Oregon, particularly Eugene where she received three degrees in anthropology, a bachelors, masters and doctorate from the University of Oregon. Dartt Newton had been a curator at the Burke Museum of Natural History and Culture in Seattle from 2008 through 2011 while teaching at the University of Washington. Her most recent experience was as Curator of Native American Art at the Portland Art Museum.

AWARDS:  1st Place $1,000, 2nd Place $350, 3rd Place $250 & 4 Honorable Mention ribbons.

Did you know there is a proper direction to pass food around the table?  It dates back centuries to men, mostly right handed, who were armed at the dinner table.  If you passed food  from the right, you ran the chance of bumping in to a weapon or worse yet, causing a spilled drink.  So these days it is still considered proper to serve or pass from left to right.  After all these years, you’d think there would be a better reason or a new direction, but, no.  This next Call is a new direction, more than 3 decades old –an exhibit now in its 33rd year. JUROR:  Ruth Erickson is Associate Curator at the Institute of Contemporary Art, Boston. She co-curated the major exhibition “Leap Before You Look: Black Mountain College 1933-1957” with Helen Molesworth and has organized exhibitions of the work of artists Rokni and Ramin Haerizadeh and Ethan Murrow at the ICA/Boston. She is currently at work on the first U.S. survey of Mark Dion’s work to open in 2017. Erickson received her Ph.D. in art history from the University of Pennsylvania in 2014 and has published and presented her writing widely. She serves as a visiting critic at the School of the Museum of Fine Arts/Tufts and Massachusetts College of Art and Design.   

AWARDS:  Juror’s Prize $1,000, 2nd prize $250, 3rd Prize $175 & two honorable merit awards.

I’m on week 3 of no dishwasher.  It isn’t that bad.  I was dreading it before the move, but I knew downsizing was important enough to get over the inconvenience.  The only real difference I have noticed is the increased use of parchment paper, ha.  I don’t mind washing dishes, but cleaning baking pans is to be avoided when at all possible.  This next Call doesn’t require your work be on or in paper, but one artist will get a bonus prize of beautiful papers from the Awagami Factory.  Take a look…

His passion for photographing graffiti gained him publication in outlets such as Brooklyn Street Art Blog, Graffiti Art Magazine & Juxtapoz.  Once in Oakland Brock worked as an intern at Hamburger Eyes and as an art handler at White Walls & Shooting Gallery in San Francisco.  As a supporter & facilitator of the Bay Area Art community, Brock continues his “extended” art education by working as an art handler at various galleries and museums both locally and out of state.

Four weeks left until my home, studio & storage space are cut in half.  I am trying to make the hard decisions about need versus want, necessary versus nourishing.  There is a time & place for everything, but finding those times and places is an art form all its own.  I fell in love with the work of today’s AAAD Artist of the Day, Heather Robinson, whose “Attraction” series explores some of these very themes.  I find it a comfort to know that others, both known & unknown to me, experience my thoughts & feelings & challenges as there own.  We are not alone.

The women in my family have a grudge against the snap of a fresh green vegetable.  My mother has canned green beans for her sisters for the last half-dozen years.  Her process for canning requires a certain amount of cooking plus heat-sealing the jars which compromises the texture.  But, that isn’t where the grudge match ends; my aunts cook canned green beans for hours in addition.  What did green beans ever do to the women in my family?  While I contemplate those answers, here’s a Call that wants to see more work by women.  Take a look…

Food imagery IS the visual brand of this site.  For years, I used primarily pristine images of perfect foods on crisp, white, burned out backgrounds. But in the past couple of years, my strategy has changed. I have concerns about how many people, children specifically, don’t know what natural produce looks like.  I’ve had many cashiers at the grocer offer to let me trade in a piece of organic fruit for something waxed, dyed & shiny for fear I was buying “bad” produce.
