My family enjoys participating in cultural celebrations from around the world. None of us grew up with any sort of specific cultural traditions aside from spaghetti night or BBQ on Father’s Day. So each year we adopt Chinese New Year, Oktoberfest & even the Day of the Dead as our very own. Chinese New Year gives us an extra 6 weeks or so to make plans for the upcoming year (Yes, we really are late to everything –even making resolutions, ha). Dia de Los Muertos offers us a time to tell stories about those we’ve lost. I’ve lost a lot of people lately, and it is a great comfort to take time to celebrate them. Food is a common experience for us all, but I find that creative people tend to purposefully try to indulge all the senses at once–musicians, writers, dancers AND visual artists. So how perfect is this next Call that centers around a slightly food-obsessed musician. If you don’t know his work (Eggs & Sausage is one of my favorites, but Chocolate Jesus was infamously controversial), do your homework…you won’t be sorry.

This open call is for all artists who have found themselves deeply moved, enraptured, bemused or inspired by Tom Waits. Has his music ever transported you to a dusty desert town or an abandoned train yard or a glowing, gritty neon rainy city street filled with steam? Listening to his music do you come away from the experience with a flash of inspiration embodying his lyrics? Like Tom Waits, do you tell tall tales and spin yarns with your work?

ELIGIBILITY: Open to all US artists

MEDIA: Sculpture, painting, drawing, photo, printmaking, ceramics, assemblage, collage, mixed media, fiber art & artist books. This exhibition cannot accept jewelry, video, film, performance art, installation and works requiring an external electrical source.

ENTRY FEE: $35 for up to 3

JUROR: graduated from the San Francisco Art Institute in 1977. Her background as an artist has assisted in her understanding of the perspectives and idiosyncrasies of the art world.

For over twenty-five years the Andrea Schwartz Gallery has supported work that is challenging and at the forefront of contemporary practice, representing a select group of mid-career artists from the Bay Area and throughout the country. The range of work includes paintings, works on paper, photography and sculpture.

AWARDS: A Juror’s Award ribbon and certificate will be presented to three works that express the most imaginative interpretation of the theme. There are two opportunities to get into this show. The juror will select works that will be exhibited in the Arc Gallery at 1246 Folsom Street and on the Arc On-line Gallery. The juror will also select works that will be shown in the Arc On-line gallery only. This allows for more works to be seen beyond the 1,000 square feet physical limitation of the gallery.

We eat soup three or more evenings per week in the Winter. I try to work out most mornings and then do a little dinner prep before I sit down to publish the day’s post. Today it is ham and vegetable soup. The secret to most of my soups is the thickener. Cornstarch will work, but I prefer pureed pinto beans. Great source of fiber and silky texture. Nat’l Juried Exhibition 2014

The Arts & Culture Alliance of Greater Knoxville announces a call for entries for its National Juried Exhibition of 2014. The Arts & Culture Alliance’s National Juried Exhibition was developed to provide a forum for artists to compete on a national scale and display their work. Approximately 40-50 fine art works encompassing all styles and genres from both emerging and established artists will be selected by the juror, Paul Collins, for exhibition in the main gallery.

ELIGIBILITY: All artists 18 years and older living in the US.

MEDIA: Entries must be original works completed within the last two years in the following categories: Painting (oil, watercolor, acrylic, pastel, digital, and mixed media), Graphic Arts (pencil, charcoal, pen and ink, conte, colored pencil, and printmaking), 3D (sculpture, ceramic, and fibers), and Photography.

DEADLINE: December 8, 2013

NOTIFICATION: Mailed January 6, 2014

ENTRY FEE: $40 for up to three works. Up to 3 additional entries may be submitted for $7/ea. Diptychs and triptychs are considered one work. Works are juried by digital images only. Each 2D work may be represented by one digital image, and each 3D work may be represented by up to three separate digital images: two full views and one detail view.

JUROR: Paul Collins is a multidisciplinary artist and curator from Nashville, TN. Paul makes drawings, paintings and sculpture that combine humor, tactility and observation to examine the world around us. Paul has an MFA from Yale and has been a resident at Skowhegan, Anderson Ranch Arts Center, and the Vermont Studio Center.

Paul is an enthusiastic collaborator and has curated shows or organized artist projects for a wide range of artists. Paul lives in Nashville, TN & works as Gallery Director and Asst Professor of Art at Austin Peay State University in Clarksville.

AWARDS: At least $1,000 in cash awards as designated by the juror

For this call for submissions, Linus Galleries wants you to take a few steps into the dark side to represent all 7 sins collectively or whichever ones make you quiver the most.
