I am particularly anxious for Spring to arrive this year. We’re getting closer to when my yearly batch of fiddleheads arrive from the northeast. I have a friend that sends these asparagus-reminiscent beauties to me once a year. And as much as I love them, my anticipation of Spring is about more this year. While on vacation recently, I was having dinner in a restaurant only to see the chef come out and clip herbs off a wall planter in the dining room. I have a friend that has installed a decorative green wall in their livingroom. And I know several others that are making vertical gardening plans. It seems planting vertical not only makes the best use of space, but it is more physically accessible for lots of people for whom bending and stooping are not an option. Walls of food, how lovely. This next Call is looking for your work surrounding the idea of walls.

THEME: Walls have delineated nations & cities throughout human history. Walls define what is inside as separate from what is outside, and while this definition . . . invariably includes a defining of identity. Whatever the motivation, walls identify what is within them and what is outside them, placing limits on both. We are now in an era of new walls – walls built on the borders of nations, ideologies, cultural and personal identities. Whether attempting to break through, climb over, dig under, circumvent, use as a canvas, or decorate, artists respond to the walls that confront them.

JUROR: Julia Samuels of Overpass Projects. Overpass Projects was founded in 2015 by Julia Samuels and Henry Felton Brown, after the two completed their MFAs at the Rhode lsland School of Design. They practice all forms of intaglio, etching, engraving, photogravure, relief printing, screen printing, lithography and letterpress. Connected to a wide community of artists and designers, they are innovating new ways to bring other disciplines into the print shop and ways to push printmaking out into the world.

I was out having Thai food for lunch with a friend lately. I ordered massaman curry with shrimp; she ordered green curry with tofu. I will never understand. I said, “Tofu?”, and she replied, “of course, it is my favorite”. Seriously? I am certain there are a lot of people who appreciate tofu as a vegetarian-friendly protein that will take on the flavors of other foods. But she looked me in the face and said, “it is my favorite”. NO. It isn’t really anyone’s favorite, is it? I was looking at the face of deprivation, right? Someone explain tofu to me. Again. Please. CALL for ENTRIES: Artist Residency from Brush Creek Foundation for The Arts

ELIGIBILITY: Open to all artists 18+

MEDIA: Residencies are intended as professional development opportunities for writers, visual artists, performance musicians & composers in all fields & genres.

DEADLINE: September 1, 2017 (for the Winter/Spring Residency which runs January – May).

ENTRY FEE: $40 for up to 20 images, 20 pages or 2 scores/2 music files.

JUROR: After reviewing the work samples in each discipline (arts work, scores and manuscripts), a rotating panel of experts & professionals in the art & humanities independently rate & rank the applicants based on the development & promise of a personal vision or voice. On average, BCFA’s capacity is 8 residents each month. This includes 4 visual artists, 2 literary artists & 2 musicians. During the Winter/Spring session, 40 residents are invited.

AWARDS: Winners receive exclusive studio space, meals & individual lodging. Residents are responsible for all necessary supplies and transportation to and from Brush Creek Ranch. Residencies are 2-4 weeks in length. This depends on availability and applicant’s ranking in the jury process. Preference will go to those requesting a 4-week residency.

Sleep is not my friend. As a lifelong insomniac, and I have tried EVERY remedy –prescription, herbal, oils, sounds, aroma. Lack of sleep promotes depression. For me, depression often takes the form of extended weeks or months of “the blues” marked by an remarkable lethargy and a sort of emotional paralysis. It is more common in winter, so I am actively combating insomnia every February. This year, I am having moderate success by not snacking late at night (my apologies to the massive hit sustained by the popcorn industry) & getting half an hour of moderate exercise each morning. Creativity is the ultimate therapy & this next Call is a great chance to work out some pent up “blues”. Investigate….

So, I opted out of holiday celebrations this year. I am not feeling particularly Grinch-y; however, it has been a sobering year, and I didn’t feel compelled to fake it. As a result, I am wading through the unnecessary “cheer ups” & the non-stop recipes for snowflake-shaped confections. I think that it is that very sense of introspection about domesticity and gender that drew me to Carrie Mae Smith, today’s AAAD Artist of the Day.
