I had emergency ravioli last weekend. Well, I had emergency oral surgery. It was every bit as awful as that sounds, but necessary. Since my husband & son both have Celiac disease, so true Italian pasta deliciousness is an uncommon sight in my house. But after all the soup and oatmeal I could stand, I was craving comfort food that wouldn’t make me hate life later. I tried everything in my house, one after the other, foods were too hot, too cold, to crunchy, too crispy, too bland, too sticky. And then there was delivery cheese ravioli. It was like the clouds parted. Divine.

If only all such persistence paid dividends, right? Sometime persistence in art leads to over-working. I’ve put a lot of holes in a lot of paper, and even a few canvases, over the years. The outcome of political persistence has varied over the years from victory parties to concession speeches, rallies to protests, elections to resignation. What drives your artist persistence? What is the benchmark you trying to pass or surpass? Is it a resume qualifier? Is it a sales or publication goal? Is it a signature body of work or finding your voice? It is all of those things for me, but somewhere tied up in all of those things is belief in my own legitimacy as an artist. Again, what drives your artist persistence?

JUROR: Lori Pratico is the founder of the Girl Noticed Community Mural Project. For Lori, her artwork is not only her passion but also her voice. She is driven to inspire people to recognize that no matter what, there is always something about them extraordinary and worth noticing. Girl Noticed reminds us to pause, acknowledge and appreciate others and ourselves. Aside from Girl Noticed, Lori serves on the Broward County Public Art and Design Committee.

AWARD: 1st Place $500, 2nd Place $300 and 3rd Place $150.

SALES: The d’Art Center retains a 40% commission, not including awards.

Parsnips make me itchy. My family eats copious amount of root vegetables –carrots and turnips and beets. But the carrot’s paler cousin makes me feel like I have rolled in fiberglass insulation. Parsnips are easy to cultivate & fetch a higher price than carrots at local farmers markets. I have a friend that grows them because she never has any waste. They last forever, but even if they start to get overripe, they are a favorite treat of her retired work horse. JUROR: All entries are submitted to a jury comprised of women artists & art professionals. Each year new jurors are selected for the process.

SALES: Studio C Gallery takes a 20% donation from each artwork sold during the duration of the exhibition. 80% of sales will go directly to the artist. The gallery asks that each artist make a donation to the Wild Horse Sanctuary or Return to Freedom.

Frequently, the most memorable kitchen creations are happy accidents. As much as I love a list, theme and a plan, sometimes I find myself in a situation that forces me to create a masterpiece from what I have on hand or try something new on the spur of the moment. My favorite chicken-cheddar-broccoli soup came about as a necessary use of what I could find in the frig. Now it is a winter menu staple in our house. DEADLINE: Delivered by December 27, 2014. Please remember to ship in plenty of time due to delays expected during the holidays.

It’s that time again. What would I be if I had to portray myself as food? This week I choose kefir. I am fascinated. My new gluten-free regimen had increased my dairy intake, and my son has dairy sensitivities. Enter milk kefir. Kefir is simply milk that is fermented at room temperature with kefir grains for about 24 hours. It has many wonderful health benefits, a great flavor and is also usually tolerated well by the lactose intolerant. I’ve been buying it commercially for $4 a quart, but now I’m going to make it myself. Think of it as a self-portrait…

Invitation to all women artists worldwide to submit photography and photo-based work depicting the ‘Self’. The work does not necessarily have to be a traditional portrait or self-representation.

ELIGIBILITY: Female artists worldwide

MEDIA: Open to any form of photography, including traditional processes, digital and video. Also encouraged is artwork in other mediums- for example, artist books, sculpture, mixed media – where photography is an intrinsic element.

JUROR: Carla Williams is a writer, editor, and photographer. She is author of numerous essays and articles about photography and is co-author of two histories of photography, including “The Black Female Body: A Photographic History” with Deborah Willis. Williams is Assistant Professor at Rochester Institute of Technology and is editor of the Chroma book series for the California Institute of Integral Studies.

AWARDS: Inclusion in the gallery exhibit from September 6 to October 24th. Plus one artwork will be chosen for cover design of invitation. Images of all accepted work will be on the WMG website: www.womanmade.org.

My son is contemplating going to school to be a pastry chef. I can’t even allow myself to think that it might really happen; he’s only 13. But the most interesting part of this particular career conversation (there have been hundreds) was that he was shocked and relieved to find out that it was OKAY for him to be a boy and want to cook. Her work is in the collections of The Metropolitan Museum of Art, Los Angeles County Museum of Art, Columbus Museum of Art, Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, Museum of Contemporary Photography, Microsoft, The Haggerty Museum of Art and The Dallas Museum of Art.

Recent publications include MP3: Midwest Photographers’ Publication Project (Aperture and The Museum of Contemporary Photography), Vitamin Ph: New Perspectives in Photography (Phaidon) and Photo Art: The New World of Photography (Aperture).

Connell’s first full length monograph entitled Kelli Connell: Double Life was released by DECODE Books in August, 2011. Connell lives in Chicago where she is an Associate Professor of Photography at Columbia College.
