I’m notoriously an emotional eater. I find comfort in food, and I know it is a slippery slope. As I’ve gotten older, I’ve quit trying to fight the desire to eat for comfort and have just tried to make better “comfortable” choices. JUROR: David Carson is the most Googled graphic designer in history and has been named the art director of the era by Creative Review, London. Carson’s company has offices in New York and Los Angeles. Their work for cultural, corporate, music and other clients has been recognized by the New York Type Directors Club, American Center for Design and ID magazine. Graphic Design USA Magazine (NYC) listed Carson as one of the all-time five “most influential graphic designers of the era”, alongside Milton Glaser, Paul Rand, Saul Bass and Massimo Vignelli. Carson’s work has been published in over 150 magazine and newspaper articles around the world, including Eye, Idea, The New York Times, The Guardian, Metropolis, Domas, Wired and Émigré. A feature in Newsweek magazine said of Carson: “He changed the public face of graphic design.” American graphic designer, art director and surfer David Carson is best known for his innovative magazine design, in particular for Ray Gun magazine & experimental typography that has been widely imitated and which influenced an era of graphic design.

She received the Les Usherwood Lifetime Achievement Award in 1997 from the Advertising and Design Club of Canada. She has received an honorary doctorate from the Ontario College of Art and Design in Toronto and a second from Mass Art College of Art and Design. Kunz was appointed Officer of the Order of Canada, Canada’s highest civilian honor, and recently received the Queen’s Jubilee Medal of Honor. Additionally, she will be inducted in the Museum of American Illustration Hall of Fame in New York in 2017.

I believe in food as medicine. Like a lot of you, I have a couple of chronic health conditions that require medication, including cough-variant asthma. I have chosen to take the least amount of medication possible to suppress side effects –specifically to my voice. JUROR: Dr. Eric Avery is a celebrated printmaker and recently-retired physician who for decades has practiced medicine and art in tandem. His complexly layered work connects issues of printmaking and art history with social concerns of public health, human rights abuse and responses to HIV/AIDS, death, sexuality and the body. Creating powerful historical records of experience with patients, he changes the ordinary role of a doctor into an artist inspired by healing, fusing the space between art and medicine. Before his retirement, he was clinical associate professor of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences and member of the Institute for Medical Humanities, The University of Texas Medical Branch, specializing in issues related to HIV/AIDS. In addition to being the subject of numerous gallery exhibitions, Avery’s work is found in many prestigious permanent collections.

When winter hits, my mood often turns darker. But, instead of pizza & ice cream (okay, sometimes instead), I try to reset my nutritional routine. I am always surprised how unexpected foods can trigger a change in mood. Healthy fats like that found in fish, nuts, avocado are shown to improve brain health while vitamin D found in dairy (and non-dairy mylks) are a big help if I have been stuck indoors. Spicy foods offer anti-inflammatory benefits that help with circulation and my energy levels. It is almost time for winter cabbage. I am always grateful to those of our local farmers that have the forethought to plant cold-hardy cabbage in late August so that we can have at least one locally-grown GREEN veggie this winter. It is neither a high-yield crop, nor is it a high profit crop. Aside from how delightful it tastes in Irish stew, I am fascinated by the other worldliness of cabbage layers. If you compare the outside leaves to the interior leaves of the cabbage head, you would assume one was some sort of alien mutant version of the other with changes in color, texture AND taste. CURATORS: Marty Henley has a B.S. in Computer Animation and Design, a M.A. in art with a concentration in sculpture, and is a Professional Illustrator and Game Designer. He has a fascination with organic and inorganic textures and masses, their combinations in the creation of imaginary artistic creatures, and the emotional and psychological connections the viewers have with these creations. Marty is currently an Adjunct faculty member at East Tennessee State University, were he teaches 2D design, 3D design, and Color Theory.

Kevin C. Reaves has a B.F.A and an M.F.A. with a concentration in Jewelry and Metals. He is a traditional sculptor, metalsmith, digital modeler and an avid game and toy designer. Kevin is inspired by retro science fiction, Japanese monster movies, toys, games and 80’s pop culture. His designs have a strong geometric aesthetic and they often deal with social issues and human conditions that primarily focus on Western civilization.

Ogden has been the recipient of grants and awards that include the Joan Mitchell Foundation Painters & Sculptors Grant Program & Kentucky Foundation for Women Sallie Bingham Award. In addition, she is a founding member of ENID, a Louisville based women sculptors organization. Her work has been reviewed in regional and national publications. Ms. Ogden is currently Professor of Art at Spalding University & the Kentucky School of Art at Spalding in Louisville, KY.

Much of his recent work serves as commentary on academia, secrecy and institutional behavior.

ELIGIBILITY: Open to all artists

THEME: Humor and art have been infrequent partners at best. With both a philosophical interest in the nature of humor and its relationship to aesthetics, this exhibition invites artworks that may utilize a conceptual approach and are actually funny, occupying this middle ground between art and humor in ways that might be thought-provoking, absurd, or even just silly.

MEDIA: all work must be funny. if you make the curator laugh, chuckle, wryly smile, or have a genuine humorous reaction, then it’s included. If not, it’s not. Don’t worry: the curator has a very wide ranging sense of humor. except when it comes to Woody Allen movies which, for some reason, he just doesn’t get.

All work must be in analog form, nothing digital will be accepted; suggested analog forms include, but are not limited to: index cards, single sheets of paper, cassette tapes, small sculpture, airmail envelopes, 35mm slides, canned goods, Morse code and anything else that you might think of. But it must be analog. No zeros and ones.

All of the work must be small. Maximum size–one cubic foot (not one cubit foot). Minimum size–head of a pin.

All work must be signed. This also means that all work can be catalogued, so dates, dimensions, material, etc. must be either included separately with the entry or readily discernible. An online catalog of every object submitted will be published.

All work must be environmentally disposable. You can retrieve your work at the end of the show, or pay to have it shipped back, but it is expected that the vast majority of work will be trashed on the last day. They will provide the trash bags.

DEADLINE: My guess is sometime early to mid September since the work must arrive by the end of September.

ENTRY FEE: None

CURATOR: Dr. Scott Contreras-Koterbay, associate professor, (Ph.D., St. Andrew’s University) specializes in Philosophy of Art and Contemporary Art. He also teaches Modern Art, Art History, Theory and Criticism, Research Methods for Art Historians, Special Topics: African-American Art and Russian Art.
