Grow food, not grass is popping up as a meme all over social media.  But, if you have an home owners association, you are also facing rules against front-yard gardens and maybe even stiff penalties.  so of my neighbors have solved the issue for themselves by growing supplemental foods among their shrubs and flowers.  Red peppers are beautiful next to day lilies.  This next Call wants to see the landscape(ing) through YOUR eyes.  Perspective is key…

My dog only eats dog treats at home.  When she’s at the dog sitter’s house, she will only take cat treats.  I don’t get it.  I once had a cat that would only limp when I watched her.  How odd to think that our perceived expectations alter even the behavior of our furry family.  This next Call wants to know about your favorite animal friends.  An opportunity with a little heart…

ARTIST of the DAY: Brooks Salzwedel

"You Never" (graphite) by Brooks Salzwedel
“You Never…” (graphite) by Brooks Salzwedel

I have been struggling with identity lately, struggling to find my voice again –both metaphorically & literally.  Art is supposed to evoke emotion, possibly incite action.  Added to the experience of the audience, art can evolve, change stories and inspire change for the better, or worse.  The work of today’s AAAD Artist of the Day, Brooks Salzwedel feels intimate, makes me feel vulnerable, maybe a little paranoid.  This organic drawing nestled in a foreign shrine are seemingly devoid of connection, sans proximity.  But, then again, ‘you never’ know what another person battles.

such sweet NECTAR

Pancakes are an uncommon treat at our house.  Even the best of store bought syrup shouldn’t be kept as long as the periods between pancake occurrences at our breakfast table.  So, my husband now makes our pancake syrup.  Someone suggested he substitute agave nectar for the sugar in the recipe.  Wow.  It isn’t a 1:1 substitution.  Agave nectar is much sweeter than honey or refined sugar.  I can’t handle it.  We’ll stick to the water, sugar, molasses & vanilla standard, thanks.  This next Call is just sweet enough to intrigue.  Take a look…

Popcorn is now complicated.  I used to enjoy it from the theatre or from the microwave.  But in the continuing effort to eat real food, my husband now insists on popping it from the kernel on top of the stove.  We ran out two days ago, and after briefly considering experimenting with the .gif suggesting you can pop it on the cob in your microwave (don’t do this, btw), we opted for a bag of microwaveable popcorn left from a recent hotel stay.  Just no.
