CALL for ENTRIES: 2017 Academy Nat’l

Learn more about the 2017 National Juried from the Academy Center of the Arts! comforTABLE

Winter is the season of indulgent foods.  Comfort foods have changed for me over the years, but they still tend to be slow-cooked, hearty fare. My favorite indulgences are french onion soup with fresh parmigiana, Swiss steak over pureed potatoes, masala laden with cauliflower & chickpeas or black-bean chili with a squeeze of lime.  And don’t forget the gulab jamun.  Luckily winter comes but once a year –much like this next Call.  Indulge…

BEANS
of green

The women in my family have a grudge against the snap of a fresh green vegetable.  My mother has canned green beans for her sisters for the last half-dozen years.  Her process for canning requires a certain amount of cooking plus heat-sealing the jars which compromises the texture.  But, that isn’t where the grudge match ends; my aunts cook canned green beans for hours in addition.  What did green beans ever do to the women in my family?  While I contemplate those answers, here’s a Call that wants to see more work by women.  Take a look…

The freezer saves dinner about two days a week in my house.  We purposefully cook more portions than we can eat and save the leftovers.  It started out as a way to send lunch with my kiddo for school, but it has become a dinner rescue regularly.  When you get busy and have forgotten to plan for dinner and live nearly a half hour from the closest grocery or restaurant, you’re grateful for frozen leftovers.  This next Call is not a leftover or frozen, but I did neglect to plan the publication more than a few days out from the deadline.  Sorry about that…

CALL for ENTRIES: Abstract 3

I recently attended an “abstract” dinner party.  I wasn’t quite sure what I was getting into, and that made me MORE eager to attend, ha.  Upon arrival, I found that every dish was comprised of food cut in an identical manner. I couldn’t tell cubes of potato from turnip or cubes of yellow carrot from summer squash.  From appetizer to entree to dessert, it was an evening of simple foods prepared with time-consuming precision.  I was forced to savor the preparation and intent since nothing was representational of its original form.  Abstract food.  Fascinating. The landscape of my kitchen counter is changing. My day is incomplete without fresh fruit. While the happy dance of the clementines begins soon, it is otherwise just the banana bunny hop for most of the winter.  I find that most in-season winter produce is either not finger food (cranberries, pomegranates) and/or expensive (guava, kumquat, kiwi).  So clementines & bananas still life it will be.  This next Call invites you to create your own still life.  Orange you glad?
