HERO

What would we do without the iconic dishes that make up the safety net?  You know the ones…everyone likes some version of it.  They tend to be my “go to” meals on nights when I have to plan in advance.  Since I don’t know what anyone will be in the mood for, I hit the highlights.  Tonight is spaghetti night.  No matter who is coming, I can cover vegetarian, vegan & gluten-free if need be.  This Call is all about iconic art categories.  Please investigate this one.  If you work in 2-D, there is probably a way to make this work for you

Check out this Call for Entries from Art of Brands (a new AAAD sponsor) for Iconic Images.  There is no entry fee, and this could be a great way to earn money from your art.  Take a look…

*Editor’s Note:  So many of you have talked to me about selling your work w/o being bogged down running a gallery or about art fairs or gallery representation.  I know you often leave the conversation not feeling like nothing is accessible.  I like THIS opportunity.  If you work in 2-D, don’t dismiss this Call.  Some of you might consider simply doing what you already do but direct some content to suit this purpose.  It won’t be for everyone, but I think it is a valid option for a lot of you.

TO HANDLE

Mozzarella-making is at a standstill at my house.  Okay, to be truthful, no one has ever mistaken this house for a cheese factory.  But lately, we’ve suffered the loss of one digital thermometer after another.  They don’t just stop; the temps slowly start veering from accurate.  I don’t normally advocate technology-forward kitchen gadgetry, but a digital thermometer results in far fewer failed batches of cheese–when it works.  I think it may be time to just shell out the bucks for one I KNOW won’t die easily.  I surrender.  You should surrender your digital art to this next call. Take a look…

SOUR?

I dream of lemons & olives–and corn, of course.  While dreaming of my future garden, I am excited at the prospect of growing non-GMO corn.  But, I also have fantasies of the produce I love most like lemons and olives, neither of which is native to my climate.  Is it just enormous hubris on my part to believe that if I try to grow them in a walipini that they will automatically surpass the quality of the native-grown varieties that I buy after their long trip to my local grocery store?  What is it about humans that makes us want to manipulate plants?  This next Call wants to see how you successfully manipulate plants in your art.  Take a look…

CALL for ENTRIES: Animals

ALFALFA

Grass or corn or both?  Research on how to feed the animals we choose to raise after the move to the farm continues.  Most commercially-available feed consists of a high percentage of cornGMO corn.  Feeding our chickens and goats and sheep GMO corn really negates the reason behind raising our own animals.  So grass fed, right?  Why not just turn them out into the field since it has green stuff growing on it? Well, it is more complicated than that.  You have PLANT and sometimes re-plant that field of “grass” in most cases. Then, what variety do you plant.  If we are what we eat, they are what they eat.  In the end, the animal depends on the plant.  Interesting.  This next Call depends on only the animal.  Take a look…

NUTRITION

MREs now have a strong secondary market–doomsday preppers.  I don’t think that most people relish the idea of eating pre-packaged, processed military rations.  They have improved great (or so I’ve been told); pizza is even on the horizon.  However, I would think that preserving seeds, building hydroponic systems and farming fish would be better long-term solutions than MREs.  But then again, I’m not a doomsday prepper–so, what do I know?  This next Call wants your view on militarism, but I don’t think they are interested in the food options.  Take a look…

Do you know what you call a spice cupcake without the cream cheese frosting?  A breakfast muffin.  My husband is dubious, but I say the notions of breakfast, lunch, supper and dinner foods are abstract at best.  Why must it be eggs for breakfast?  And how much difference is there between banana bread and carrot cake, really?  Mmmhmm.  This next Call is looking for the abstract, and they DON’T mean carrot cake OR banana bread.  Take a look…

Everyone has to eat on the run sometimes.  Not every meal can be separated into  courses that stretch out over 2 hours.  But, compact meals don’t have to be of lesser quality just because they are rushed.  My favorite all-in-one breakfast is bananas with crunchy peanut or almond butter with a few berries chopped for the top. A hummus monster lives at my house.  He can go through a tub of hummus a day with corn chips, carrots, pork rinds; it matters not.  We often make something instead of buying it to reduce the amount of ingredients and unpronounceable crap in our food.  However, if I am going to give in and make 40 spice hummus for the little monster in my house, I’ll have to give up the “fewer ingredients” efforts. I have produced my fair share of leaded pastries–from puck-like biscuits to unintentionally unleavened breads.  I thought it was just me, but I found out that part of the problem was my oven.  if your baking powder doesn’t full work until 425°, and your oven lacks the last 50º because it isn’t calibrated correctly, then you’re going to fail.
