I am not a fan of red velvet cake. Someone will be at my door any moment to evict me from the South, but I am just don’t get it. Most of the red velvets I have tasted are lightly cocoa-flavored cakes with the plastic-y overtone of excessive amounts of artificial red coloring. I wonder if beetroot can be used to color with adding the flavor of beetroot? Hmmm. Iwill be patient. Someone will come up with one I love eventually. JUROR: Brooks Jensen is a mainstay at the popular Review events such as Photolucida and the Houston FotoFest. As a fine art photographer, author, and educator, he has counseled one-on-one, hundreds of photographers on their work, technique, and careers through personal reviews, and many more through his workshops, books, and multi-media outlets. As publisher of LensWork, he has reviewed thousands of submissions over the last 20 years. He brings a studied eye, to say the least, to his Jury task for our exhibition “Red.”

Brooks Jensen, together with Maureen Gallagher, are Co-Editors of LensWork Magazine, LensWork Extended, and LensWork Daily, an online resource for news, technology, commentary, and discussion through blogs and podcast. The self-portrait: Is it your compulsion? Your obsession? An impulse?

Was it out of necessity (the mandatory Photo 101 exercise, a portrait for the office newsletter, or because you needed to self-promote)? Is it the autobiographical record you decided was best told in image?

Sometimes we have to step in front of the lens – we can’t seem to communicate what we want to others, or maybe we’re just the most convenient choice for a model (the least expensive, for sure). Even if we got there by default, there is no one better able to translate our vision to the camera than ourselves. Perhaps you were experimenting with persona or striving for a personal perfection? Were you desperately seeking Self?

Whatever your intention, there is nothing closer to an authentic portrait, than to sit both behind and in front of the lens. And whether for totally narcissistic or completely humble intents – you have to admit, it’s you.

Each of you who submits your self-portraits will be able to vote for up to four images (including one of yours if you’re that confident!). No anxiety here…images will be anonymous, labeled with titles and medium only if provided by their authors. You will not know who you are voting for, and your peers will not know who you voted for. Only those who make a submission will have access to vote. Though you are not required to vote, by submitting your images, you give the other submitters the right to view (and vote for) your images. The 50 to 60 images that get the most votes will be showcased in our gallery and online.

AWARDS: All selected entries are exhibited in the gallery and included in a full color exhibit catalog. Juror’s Choice receives a 20×35″ vinyl exhibit banner featuring their image. People’s Choice gains free entry into a future exhibit.

I have fought a lifelong battle with apples. REMINDER: Mobile-O-Graphy

Produce is the every man’s gourmet food.  I will try to avoid preaching about the cost of produce being a contributing factor to the unhealthy eating habits of people world wide, but the truth is, I spend a larger percentage of my grocery budget on fresh produce than anything else, including proteins.  But if you have the desire for a gourmet treat, it doesn’t have to be thousand-dollar truffle oil or exotic sashimi-grade fish.  Try a new fruit.  The taste found in a pomegranate is not to be believed.  Substitute a purple potato in your recipe.  Buy a fresh herb plant for your kitchen window; just one will do.  This next Call wants the every man’s gourmet photo–the cell phone pic.  Investigate…

Images made with mobile phones are becoming part of the photographic mainstream. Made with a phone camera, processed on the phone and even printed from the phone, these images are showing up in exhibitions both as a genre and alongside classic silver gelatin prints. Show them your latest mobile creations.

What distinguishes mobile device photography from that made with other devices? Less and Less. Possibly the fact that you can do it all on one device is unique. Sometimes the images created with mobile devices are more candid. Having a camera with us all the time lets us capture moments that can otherwise escape. Very quickly mobile phones are becoming just another type of camera taking their place alongside pin hole cameras, toy cameras, point and shoot cameras, SLR cameras etc. Here, in the gallery, we say it over and over – it’s not the camera – it’s the photographer’s vision and skill that makes a great photograph. Last year’s mobile phone photography exhibit said it. They want this year’s exhibit to prove it.

Dan’s new book “iPhone Artistry” is the definitive resource for creative iPhone photographers. His first book, Making Digital Negatives for Contact Printingbecame a seminal manual for photographers wanting to blend the power of digital imaging with the charm of the handmade print.

Dan received his B.A. and Master’s degrees from Brooks Institute of Photography, in Santa Barbara, CA. Dan has taught digital imaging workshops for 18 years on three continents and several island countries. Including here at the Darkroom Gallery. His platinum/palladium and pigmented ink prints are included in private and public collections internationally.

Photographers created images that baffled the viewer as early at the 1860s; Henry Peach Robinson was a pioneer of combination printing, creating the illusory photo montage long before there was Photoshop. JUROR: Opening in Chicago in 1987, the Catherine Edelman Gallery was quick to become one of the Midwest’s leading fine art photography galleries. Among Trees

We live among trees – depend on them – harvest them – eat from them – worship them – love them.  To some people trees are home, to others — simply a resource.  For this exhibit we want to examine the lives of trees and their intersection with our lives.

Trees transcend time as we experience it.  How many of us as children have planted a tree, watched it grow and then left it behind to a new generation? Trees stand as witnesses to generations past, present and future.  Trees are part of the ecological web of life on earth and whether we know it or not we all depend on them.

Show them what trees mean to you.  Objects of beauty, reverence, necessity? Symbols of strength and stoicism?  Monuments to the past?  Victims of man’s consumption?  They want to see how you envision life Among Trees.

JUROR: Time, memory and nature are the central motifs that underlie the photographic imagery of American photographer Beth Moon.

Whether she is recording the majestic, sentinel-like Baobab trees for the Portraits of Time series; capturing the strange balance between childhood innocence and the darker wisdom of nature in the project, Thy Kingdom Come;  rendering menacing carnivorous plants in the Savage Garden portfolio, or constructing fanciful, dreamscapes in the Seen But Not Heard portfolio;  Moon reveals a magical and intuitive appreciation for the ways in which time, memory and nature define our understanding of man’s place in the universe.

Moon studied fine art at the University of Wisconsin.  Moving to England and inspired by the many ancient trees there, she decided to make a series of their portraits. She mastered platinum/palladium printing, an ideal process for her vision.  Her work has been the object of numerous solo and group exhibitions in museums and galleries worldwide, receiving critical acclaim.  Beth now resides in Marin County, California.

I love the art of the secret ingredient.  I long to have someone taste a dish I have created and wonder, “What IS that flavor?”  I like it when you take a completely ordinary dish like mashed potatoes and add an unexpected dash of dry mustard that leaves people wondering.  It is food that creates its own dinner conversation–the ultimate compliment. If your audience is standing indefinitely motionless, entranced by the possibilities in your work and in devising an infinitude of scenarios and alternate endings, then you’ve made an image that will inspire gallery visitors with the beauty of ambiguity, mystery and perplexity.

Photographers created images that baffled the viewer as early at the 1860s; Henry Peach Robinson was a pioneer of combination printing, creating the illusory photo montage long before there was Photoshop.  Darkroom Gallery wants to see your images that lead the imagination to the edge, encouraging the mind to leap.  Multiple exposures, constructions, staged, anything goes, just leave them guessing.

So I was watching a “hot dish” competition on Bizarre Foods America the other day.  (A “hot dish” competition is sort of like a casserole contest.)   This particular contest was being held in a mid-western town’s VFW or American Legion Hall.  Many of the contestants sported beehive hairdos, mom jeans and gingham aprons.  Then out of nowhere, a woman in Bermuda shorts whipped out a BLOW TORCH to brown the top of her tater tot casserole like it was creme brulée–proof positive that culinary technology and techniques have made it to every fishbowl, no matter how small.  This next Call wants to see your techy stuff on a tiny scale or large, your choice.  How big is your fishbowl?

Macro/Micro:
Photographic Extremes

 

This exhibit is about two photographic extremes, regardless of what you call them: Micro Photography (AKA Macro Photography) and Macrophotography (AKA Wide Angle Photography).  The Darkroom Gallery wants to see your best work using these photographic tools.

Look it up, Macro (from Greek prefix “makros-” meaning “large”). Most sciences or areas of study use this prefix as defined.  Macroeconomics, for example: “dealing with the behavior of the whole economy”. Microeconomics: “study of the behavior of small economic units, such as that of individual consumers, opposite of macroeconomics”. So what happened with Photography?  Commonly, photographers call images of things small and extreme closeups, Macro Photography.

Artwork by Shawn Tucker!What then is Microphotography? Interestingly, Nikon uses the term Micro for it’s close focusing lenses, but not Canon.  So, even the manufacturers don’t agree.

Microphotography reveals a world unseen by the naked eye. It often exposes patterns and designs that create sublime abstract images. Macrophotography gathers a view often larger and grander than can be gathered with the human eye. Both introduce distortions either through lens characteristics or stitching construction techniques that are creative tools used to produce these distinctive images.

JUROR: Science photographer Felice Frankel is a research scientist in the Center for Materials Science and Engineering at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Working in collaboration with scientists and engineers, Felice’s images have been published in over 200 journal articles and/or covers and various other publications for general audiences such as National Geographic, Nature, Science, Angewandte Chemie, Advanced Materials, Materials Today, PNAS, Newsweek, Scientific American, Discover Magazine, and New Scientist among others.

She is a fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science and has received awards and grants from the National Science Foundation, the National Endowment for the Arts, the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation, the Guggenheim Foundation, the Camille and Henry Dreyfus Foundation, the Graham Foundation for Advanced Studies in the Fine Arts, among others. Felice was a Loeb Fellow at Harvard University’s Graduate School of Design and was awarded the Distinguished Alumna Award at Brooklyn College, CUNY and the Lennart Nilsson Award for Scientific Photography.

Felice founded the Image and Meaning workshops and conferences whose purpose is to develop new approaches to promoting the public understanding of science through visual expression.
