I’m not a huge fan of buffet restaurants.  I understand why people hosting large parties prefer buffets, but I choose NOT to go to buffet restaurants because I prefer not to be surrounded by people. ROMAN SUSAN operates as a gallery and venue for arts programming in the Roger’s Park neighborhood of Chicago. Roman Susan is named after Roman and Susan Lewandowski.

ELIGIBILITY:  Open to all artists.  Editor’s Note:  Accepted artwork has to be delivered for a March 29th opening–only two weeks after the deadline.  So, artists outside the US could be looking at hefty delivery fees for such a short turn around time.

NOTIFICATION:  Very shortly after the deadline.

ENTRY FEE:  None.  Submit up to 5 images.

ENTRY PROCEDURE:  Art should be ready to hang with a frame or finished edges. Artists are responsible for delivery or shipment of work.

Email your entry with up to 5 images to gallery@romansusan.org. Please include a short statement and the dimensions of your work.

It is snowing like crazy at my house right now, and I promise you that the grocery store is crowded with people shopping as though it is the last food they will ever buy.  There is something about the peaceful quilt of snowfall that brings out the animal instinct regarding food.  My favorite is when people stock up on microwaveable food that they won’t be able to cook if there is no electricity.  What would these folks think if they could see themselves in the mirror?  This next call is a “momentary mirror” of sorts.  Take a look…

Archetype Drift

 

Photography can be a painful mirror.  Because of its illustrative tendencies and mnemonic capacities, photography enables us to tell the stories we want to tell with a hammer that is the frame. What happens when the medium gets in the way of the most important narratives?

Photography can be a seductive enabler that, at its worst, allows us to fetishize, beautify, and conduct shallow investigations. Meanwhile, paradigmatic changes in history and culture metastasize alongside new technological ways to make, edit, and distribute images. Are photographers pushing envelopes of meaning and relevance? Are they even keeping pace?

Powerhouse Gym by Brian UlrichWith the ubiquity of images high and low, how does an image-maker create cultural value in 2013? Archetype Drift is a call for new methods of photographic making, editing, and presentation.  It is a call for risk taking, chance operations, relabeling, and letting go of the comfortable.  It is in itself an experiment and a (momentary) mirror.

ELIGIBILITY:  Open to all artists

MEDIA:  All types of photographic and lens-based work will be considered, including video and GIFs.

DEADLINE:  February 4, 2013

NOTIFICATION:  Mid-February

CURATOR:  Jason Lazarus (born 1975) is a Chicago based artist, curator, writer, and educator who received his MFA in Photography from Columbia College Chicago in 2003.

His work has been exhibited internationally and is in major collections including the Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago, the Art Institute of Chicago, the Bank of America LaSalle Photography Collection, and the Milwaukee Museum of Art among others. Major exhibitions include “Black is, Black ain’t” at the Renaissance Society, “On the Scene” at the Art Institute of Chicago, “Not the Way You Remembered” at the Queens Museum of Art, and “Image Search” at PPOW Gallery in NYC.

Jason recently became the Co-Director of Chicago Artist Writers, a new art criticism platform.

CALL for ENTRIES: Centering the Margin

Culinary experimentation is one of my favorite endeavors.  I like to think of results in the terms a “margin for interpretation” as opposed to a “margin for error.”  No Canadian bacon or english muffin for your eggs benedict?  How about brie and roasted garlic loaf.  Granted, that interpretation may be on the very periphery of acceptable to some.  But maybe, just maybe, that’s the sweet spot.  These folks behind this next Call for Entries agree with me.  “Varied platforms of concept.”  Fun…

Centering the Margin

Centering the Margin is an artist-curated project focusing on artwork that concerns itself with spaces, events, and artifacts that exist just outside of our field of vision and attention. If our contemporary existence is marked by a focus on spectacle and constant stimulation, then Centering the Margin is a show that documents those things that fall outside this focus. These are things that require a change of speed or shift in focus to perceive them.

This show hopes to draw connections between artists concerned with margins, edges and interstitial spaces through diverse approaches and varied platforms of concept, representation and materials.

Works considered for the show could be: 1) pictorial works that represent spaces and moments that are glimpsed fleetingly if at all; 2) process-based works that employ materials that exist solely as vessels for goods or products, or are artifacts of technologies of display and production; or 3) time based works that document forces or phenomena that are barely perceptible or so common as to escape notice.  *These are only a few examples.
