Tired of broccoli? Me too. Tired of kale? I think everyone is. What about purslane? It is a succulent herb that has a touch of a bitter overtone. It is technically a weed, but that just means it is easy to grow. If you don’t have it naturally growing in your yard, you can buy the seeds on the cheap. Try it in stir fry or salads. It might add a new twist on the green portion of your meal. This next Call wants to how your work is informed by all things green. And someone will win a $500 grant as well…

THEME: Green “art that focuses on color, that is, a subject enhanced, here, by the use of the color green, in particular. The extent of this application to the composition is not a consideration in the judging of each piece. How the color green engages the viewer to enter the artist’s narrative defines these evaluations—nothing more. JUROR: James Lancel McElhinney, is a visual artist, author, oral historian & publisher. He is the recipient of a Pollock Krasner 2017 artist-grant. McElhinney attended Tyler School of Art (BFA Painting), Skowhegan School of Painting & Sculpture, and Yale University (MFA Painting). He has received numerous honors including a fellowship from the National Endowment for the Arts. McElhinney is also a published author who has conducted numerous oral history interviews for the Smithsonian Archives of American Art, Coleccion Patricia Phelps de Cisneros, the Frick Center for the History of Collecting, Robert Rauschenberg Foundation, other foundations & private individuals.

I was out having Thai food for lunch with a friend lately. I ordered massaman curry with shrimp; she ordered green curry with tofu. I will never understand. I said, “Tofu?”, and she replied, “of course, it is my favorite”. Seriously? I am certain there are a lot of people who appreciate tofu as a vegetarian-friendly protein that will take on the flavors of other foods. But she looked me in the face and said, “it is my favorite”.
