CALL for ENTRIES: Raw

Learn more about Raw The Exhibition from IU Kokomo Art Gallery!

raw FOOD

In a world where so many people are vegetarian or vegan, steak tartar was once the most controversial food conversations one could have.  Now we have so many more choices of things with which to disagree.  If we just stick to raw foods, there are still subgroups like fruitarians, juicearians, or sproutarians which cause heads to metaphorically explode.  The bottom line is that people have the right to determine what goes into their bodies, and what we choose to eat says something about who we are.  We are what we eat, right?  This next Call wants to know the raw truth about you through your work.  This one is personal…

Check out this Call for Entries from IU Kokomo Art Gallery (Kokomo, IN) for Raw: The Exhibition.  There is no entry fee, the media is wide open & the commission rate is low.  If you’re willing to let it hang out, this could be a great opportunity…

pass the SALT

Did you know there is a proper direction to pass food around the table?  It dates back centuries to men, mostly right handed, who were armed at the dinner table.  If you passed food  from the right, you ran the chance of bumping in to a weapon or worse yet, causing a spilled drink.  So these days it is still considered proper to serve or pass from left to right.  After all these years, you’d think there would be a better reason or a new direction, but, no.  This next Call is a new direction, more than 3 decades old –an exhibit now in its 33rd year. Don’t miss this opportunity…

a little KITCHEN

So, the move is complete.  My husband & I have downsized our home by half as the next step in our being completely mobile.  I am currently referring to my home as “box city” for reasons that I imagine are obvious.  Part of the move included purging my life of all the “stuff” weighing me down, including kitchen gadgets and single-use appliances.  The lack of stuff has necessarily affected my cooking as well, encouraging simplicity, whole foods & clean eating.  It is a new place, a new space & an opportunity for a fresh perspective.  This next Call, although un-themed, reinforces the idea of a unique sense of place.  Take a look…

CALL for ENTRIES: Jonesborough Open

Learn more about the Jonesborough Open Juried Art Exhibit from the Mary B Martin Program for the Arts! more than CORN

Appalachian cuisine is a “new” thing in food circles.  But it isn’t. Everyone carries their own baggage about regional foods.  When I was little, if you referred to mountain food, fried chicken would be hailed as the prime example.  Then with the legalization of moonshine, everyone seems to think the local fare is all about corn whiskey and cornbread.  It is all more complicated than that, I promise.  What if food, in concert with art and culture are THE answer for Appalachian economic recovery?  This next Call offers an art opportunity in Appalachia.  This is a beautiful venue…

Winter is the season of indulgent foods.  Comfort foods have changed for me over the years, but they still tend to be slow-cooked, hearty fare. Eating is a roving action at my house.  Sometimes breakfast is consumed at the kitchen counter.  Lunch often ends up as a living room picnic.  If I’m lucky, dinner is eaten at the kitchen table twice per week, and it isn’t because I love eating on the go.  The reality is, my tabletop is generally covered by paperwork that should be on my desk or art that should be in my studio space or music equipment undergoing cleaning or repair.  Tonight it holds a prom tuxedo (don’t ask).  I need a more functional tabletop landscape –just like this next call.  The deadline is rapidly approaching…
