After dropping my phone a dozen or more times, it finally died.  When I downloaded everything from the cloud to my new phone (yeah insurance), I left off the food photos. JUROR: Joe DiMaggio is an internationally known photographer who’s been making award winning photographs for four decades. His dynamic photographs have appeared in Time/Life, Sports Illustrated, Time Magazine, HBO and the list goes on. One of his Sports Illustrated covers was selected by Time Magazine as Picture of the Year. DiMaggio made the obvious transition to advertising work for fortune 500 companies and was extremely successful doing photo illustrations for companies such as AT&T, AOL, Barclays, Xerox, Computer Associates, HBO, RJR Nabisco, Sony, Verizon and Ford Motor Company. DiMaggio has contributed as an international pool photographer, to several Olympic Games.

JoAnne Kalish’s passion for photography came about at a young age. She was the first woman photographer hired to work for “Sports Illustrated” photographing various sporting events and their star athletes. She was contracted by the International Olympic Committee to provide photographic coverage of the 1984 Olympic Games.

 Photography by Juror JoAnne KalishHaving contributed pictures to most major international publications such as Time Magazine, Der Speigel, Paris Match, and various others, she turned her attention to advertising work and personal projects, including her current Sensuality Series. I have a lot of kitchen toys, but most of them are small, manually-operated hand gadgets.  Honestly, I’m not sure I could cook without a manual juice reamer or my mandolin.  I usually forego the big, shiny electric appliances, but I recently gave in to a beautiful tangerine colored Cuisinart ice cream maker.  It looks like a toy, but it produces masterpieces.  A little kefir milk, a few raspberries and a scrape of vanilla bean is all it takes.  This next Call wants to see the masterpiece you can create with a toy.  Be sure to read the media description completely…

Expect the unexpected.  The Nave Gallery and Washington Street Art Center have in the past separately held toy camera photography shows. They are now joining together to create  an international festival in Somerville, MA celebrating the quirky and creative results that happen when the photographer is forced to loosen his/her controls.

ELIGIBILITY:  Open to all artists

MEDIA:  Photography.  For the Somerville Toy Camera Fest (STCF), “toy camera” is identified as any low-end, low-tech, limited-control camera, including Holga, Diana and other Lomo products, as well as Brownies and Anscos and any pinhole cameras. Images made from Polaroid film backs attached to Holga are welcome; straight Polaroid camera pictures are not. Cell phone images are welcome.

DEADLINE:  July 24, 2013

I like simple foods.  As I get older, I cook and eat fewer and fewer complicated recipes and foods.  I have come to appreciate the individual flavors of foods.  Dinner at my house is frequently a small cut of beef, chicken or fish with two oven roasted veggies on the side.  Simple.  Fewer and fewer sauces.  But, then again, I prefer simplicity in a lot of ways.  I rarely even wear prints unless they are simple geometrics.  This next call makes a geometric impact for a great end look and mission.  Please give this opportunity some serious thought…

Recapturing Womanhood is a traveling art exhibit addressing how women of all ages, races, orientations and abilities document their daily life with mobile media technology. Images made with mobile phones are becoming part of the photographic mainstream.  Made with a phone camera, processed on the phone and even printed from the phone, these images are showing up in exhibitions both as a genre and alongside classic silver gelatin prints.  Show them your latest mobile creations.

What distinguishes mobile device photography from that made with other devices?  Less and Less.  Possibly the fact that you can do it all on one device is unique. Sometimes the images created with mobile devices are more candid. Having a camera with us all the time lets us capture moments that can otherwise escape.  Very quickly mobile phones are becoming just another type of camera taking their place alongside pin hole cameras, toy cameras, point and shoot cameras, SLR cameras etc.  Here, in the gallery, we say it over and over – it’s not the camera – it’s the photographer’s vision and skill that makes a great photograph.  Last year’s mobile phone photography exhibit said it.  They want this year’s exhibit to prove it.

JUROR: Dan Burkholder has a long history of looking over the photographic horizon to see, explore and teach the next great thing in imaging.  Dan’s new book “iPhone Artistry” is the definitive resource for creative iPhone photographers.  His first book, Making Digital Negatives for Contact Printingbecame a seminal manual for photographers wanting to blend the power of digital imaging with the charm of the handmade print.

Dan received his B.A. and Master’s degrees from Brooks Institute of Photography, in Santa Barbara, CA. Dan has taught digital imaging workshops for 18 years on three continents and several island countries. Including here at the Darkroom Gallery. His platinum/palladium and pigmented ink prints are included in private and public collections internationally.

AWARDS: All selected entries are exhibited in the gallery and included in a full color exhibit catalog. Juror’s Choice receives a 20×35″ vinyl exhibit banner featuring their image. People’s Choice gains free entry into a future exhibit.

SALES: Darkroom offers free matting and framing of accepted entries for the duration of each of their exhibitions, subject to standard sizes. Photography has always had a special place in art as a technology-driven medium. It has evolved from glass plates to film, to the 35mm, disposable cameras; to the digital revolution, always becoming more and more accessible. The camera-phone is the most recent incarnation of this evolution, and it has impacted photojournalism and fine art photography as much as everyday snapshots. For iSpy: Camera Phone Photography, The Kiernan Gallery seeks images taken with cell phones that span all genres of photography.

ELIGIBILITY: Photographers of all skill levels and nationalities may participate.

MEDIA: Only images taken with a cellular phone will be accepted for this
exhibition. Use of apps (e.g. Hipstamatic, Instagram, Darkroom, Tiltshift, Pano, etc.) is acceptable and encouraged.

Aline has been the Gallery Editor for Light Leaks Magazine, writes and edits the blog, Lenscratch, is a contributing writer for Diffusion, Too Much Chocolate, Lucida, and F Stop Magazine, and has been curating exhibitions for a number of galleries and on-line magazines. She was a 2009, 2010, and 2011 juror for Critical Mass, and a reviewer at Review LA in 2010 and 2011. Though she was nominated for The Excellence in Photographic Teaching Award in 2008, 2009, and 2010 and for The Santa Fe Prize in Photography in 2009 by Center, she considers her children her greatest achievement.

AWARDS: Up to 30 images will be exhibited in The Kiernan Gallery in Lexington, Virginia. Up to an additional 40 images will be selected for exhibition in the online gallery. I would love to know what percentage of cell phone pictures are of food. I am willing to  bet it is over twenty-five percent…maybe even thirty percent.  Thanks to facebook, I am regularly made aware of the gastronomic adventures of hundreds of my friends.  Unfortunately, due to the number of my friends that are artists that also read this blog… I must honestly admit that I am among the worst of the offenders.  I submit evidence of my guilt by posting  this picture to the left of delicious Buckberry Bread Pudding that I took yesterday at The Lodge at Buckberry Creek.   And, while I am not suggesting you submit pictures of food, this Call will require use of your cell phone.  Take a look…

Likely you’ve got your phone with you at all times, while you’ve forgotten your dSLR or film camera at home.  You wouldn’t dare leave your phone at home, would you?  It’s liberating, knowing your cell or smartphone can take a picture, anytime, anywhere. 

As Photographers, you’ve likely engaged in the heated discussion over the capability, viability, credibility of the camera phone.  Purists scoff at the intrusion of a mediocre, fraud of a device, that is marring their photographic religion.  And then there are the rest of you, embracing the technology and embracing the all-in-one, multi-media lifestyle of the cellphone-toting imagist, so many of you have become.   

JUROR:   Dan Burkholder has a long history of looking over the photographic horizon to see, explore and teach the next great thing in imaging. His newest book, iPhone Artistry (Pixiq Press, 2011), is the definitive how-to for creative iPhone photographers. His first book, Making Digital Negatives for Contact Printing (Bladed Iris Press, 1995) became a seminal manual for photographers wanting to blend the power of digital imaging with the charm of the handmade print.

PHOTO SUBMISSIONS:

Age: Entrants must be at least 18 years old. If younger, a parent or legal guardian may make the submission for you.

Ownership: All submitted photos must have been taken by the photographer making the entry.

If you are a parent or legal guardian submitting for a minor, please make it clear on the submission form.

Digital Submissions: All submissions must be made by digital files through:

1. Upload on the Dark Room Gallery website or

2. Sent via email to submissions (at) VermontPhotoSpace.com. This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it along with an application form. There is a $5.00 surcharge for email entries.

Check out Vermont Photo Space Gallery Online!3. Images should be as large as possible but no larger than 1280 pixels on the longest side, type jpg – set to the highest quality. DPI can be set to any number, but if you must specify something to go with 72 dpi.

FEES: Up to three images may be submitted for a fee of $20 US for on-line submission and $25 for email submission. Additional images may be submitted for an additional $5 US per image.

DEADLINE: Images and payment must be received by midnight EST on May 24, 2011.

RIGHTS: Photographers retain all rights to their work, except for submissions accepted for exhibition: artists grant Dark Room Gallery/Vermont Photo Space the right to use their images to promote the exhibition on the website and for inclusion in an exhibit catalog.

Darkroom Gallery provides free matting and framing of accepted entries for the duration of each of our exhibitions, subject to standard sizes. Photographers set their own prices if they wish to sell their work, and retain all rights.
