I am preparing to live my life with only a human washer of dishes. We’ve spent years eliminating excess stuff, downsizing possessions & square footage. Re-training ourselves after years of ingrained longing for “more” has been tough. Beginning Spring 2017, we will have limited access to water & power –only what we can produce or capture. The dishwasher will be the toughest obstacle. Because of the enormous amount of cooking we do, our dishwasher cycles at least once per day, and there is still a sink full of hand-washable items left. Maybe the answer is a really deep farmhouse sink to hide the dishes left after I’ve met my hand-washing-insanity limit. This next Call honors water conservation. Maybe they have a solution…

MEDIA: Open to all media that can be represented on a 2D banner. All work must be inspired by issues concerning water rights, drought, and water conservation.

AWARDS: 6 artists’ work will be reproduced onto high-quality outdoor banners and hung on the banner systems installed on the outer walls of D.W. Williams Hall. This is an exciting opportunity to have thousands of viewers see your work as they drive off of interstate 10 or 25 down University Avenue past the campus of New Mexico State University. *It is unclear whether artists will get to keep the banners after the exhibit. I’m not really a milk drinker –never have been. I use it in cooking and to make cheese, but by the glass is uncommon. It has in recent years, though, become helpful in the winter months. In the winter, my writing for AAAD & creating my own art (both visual & performing) keeps me indoors most of the time. A lack of sunshine for extended periods of time is often accompanied by a general malaise –the winter blues. Milk isn’t a miracle drug, but the boost of Vitamin D does seem to help. Being both a visual artist and a professor, she has worked and taught nationally at visiting artist residencies & internationally in Ireland, Italy &France, earning opportunities to exhibit at many venues.

AWARDS: Three monetary awards: Best in Show and two honorable mentions.

Did you know that pine needles are edible, sort of? If you love the smell of holiday wreaths and garlands made of fresh pine, you can get that same sense of comfort from tea brewed of pine needles. Be careful NOT to use yew, Norfolk Island Pine or Ponderosa Pine (poisonous) and be sure to forage for your needles to help avoid fertilizers and pesticides. From 2004-2007, she was curator at BCA Center in Burlington, VT, and she received her Ph.D. in art history from the University of Pennsylvania.

My “pup” will eat anything. Pepper, my four-legged child, is going to be a pup of ten-years-old soon. As she gets older, there are fewer and fewer things she should eat. The food she loves is of the cheapest, most fast-food sort of variety. We limit her people food to fresh veggies & the occasional egg, but her dog food and treats have taken a huge turn. The cheapest of food causes the worst of skin allergies, but for the love of this animal, I’ll probably be making her food and treats before long. When winter hits, my mood often turns darker. But, instead of pizza & ice cream (okay, sometimes instead), I try to reset my nutritional routine. I am always surprised how unexpected foods can trigger a change in mood. Healthy fats like that found in fish, nuts, avocado are shown to improve brain health while vitamin D found in dairy (and non-dairy mylks) are a big help if I have been stuck indoors. Spicy foods offer anti-inflammatory benefits that help with circulation and my energy levels. And over the years, I have found that established artists still make many the same mistakes I see from beginners, over and over again. As a gallerist, juror & critic, I am regularly asked why I choose one artist’s work over another. There is never just one reason, but there are a handful of regular mistakes that influence my decisions NOT to choose work. The obvious first issue: the art must be good, or at least promising–that should be the most important fact.
