CALL for ENTRIES: Recycle

Learn more about the Recycle 2016 Exhibit from BWAC!hello
AGAIN

Cooking is a constant exercise in recycling & upcycling in my house.  A whole chicken will provide a dinner, chicken salad for lunch, broth for future soups, scraps for breakfast hash or lunch tacos plus a treat or three for the pup.  My least favorite of all these is the original chicken dinner.  The upcycled & recycled varieties are always superior, just like the media for this next exhibit.  Never have an empty plate by expanding your menu by incorporating what you already do…

Children often outgrow the dislike of strongly-flavored foods, but I truly just substituted some for others.  I used to love sardines on saltines as a kid, but now you can always anchovy paste in my pantry.  This could be an explanation for why our household is such a hit with all the neighborhood felines, just like this next Call should be.  Take a look…

I’ve run out of pickled beets, and I’m nearly out of canned tomatoes.  I’m not sure if my mother canned less or if we just consumed more. Either way, the more colorful portion of my menu is highly dependent on spinach and carrots these days.  I love spinach and carrots, but there are only so many ways to eat them in a week.  Fingers crossed that Punxsutawney Phil got it right because I would welcome some early Spring color.  In the meantime, this Call is providing a colorful outlet.  Love this theme…

SUNCHOKE

Winter vegetables are a problem.  I am allergic to parsnips, tired of ever-present potatoes, refuse to pay $6 for a head of cauliflower, and am the only person left on the planet not addicted to kale.  This leaves the cabbage family, spinach –and Jerusalem artichokes.  I can’t remember the last time I ate time had this lovely tuber.  One of the best things about root vegetables is they are rarely bought excessively under-ripe, and since most folks roast or mash them, they are rarely too ripe.  That makes them easy to buy and uncommonly wasted.  Where are my keys? Road trip.  I am headed to the grocer, but you should head to this next Call for road trips.  Take a look…

Fresh fruit is still my favorite dessert.  I will take a bowl of berries over chocolate 9 times out of 10.  The only thing I miss is the fat content, the luscious mouth feel.  But, my husband has solved that problem with scratch-made whipped cream, heavy on the vanilla, light on the sugar.  There’s no going back. Chalk menu boards are sort of a bummer.  I can appreciate the eco-friendly nature of the notion as well as the flexibility for casual restaurants to keep their menus updated and filled with fresh ingredients.  But I sure miss the illustrated paper menus.  Aside from the handful of chalk art geniuses out there, nothing really beats bad menu illustration.  Come on, you know you just had a flash back to your favorite childhood pizza joint’s drawing of the mustachioed chef complete with red neckerchief and checkerboard pants.  I suspect those illustrators aren’t going to be competing in this next Call.  Take a look…

CUKES

Cucumber frequently replaces crackers & bread in our house due to a family-wide wheat allergy.  I love the crisp texture coupled with the ridiculously low price.  If you have ever grown your own, you know that they fruit prodigiously, so they cost precious little.  But I have recently volunteered to pay more for my cucumbers.  No, I didn’t go organic; I went English.  I can’t go back.  English cucumbers aren’t usually waxed because plastic wrapping helps contain the moisture, and they are less bitter due to the smaller seeds.  But the true benefit for me is that they seem to spoil at such a slow rate that I never have to throw anything away.  The benefit outweighs the cost.  The return on this next opportunity is worth every penny too.  Take a look…

We always end up eating eggs for breakfast.  I am so bored with eggs.  Because I try to avoid single-use appliances, I didn’t own a waffle iron until I inherited one second-hand from my mother-in-law last week.  We’ve had waffles 4 times in the last 7 days.  My husband asked, “Don’t you want something different?”   I explained that appearance of something 4 times in our nearly 20 years together still qualifies as something different even if the 4 times were all in one week.  The award for best waffles EVER goes to this morning’s blueberry bacon maple variety.  He deserves a cash award, really.  This next Call comes with cash awards but no blueberry waffles.  It is still worth a look though…
