In our mobile world, it seems that all of life revolves around fast food, GPS and mobile phones.  Maps have become a rarely used–and lately a little understood–artform. 

When I think of maps as an artform, I think of the fantastical maps of Canadian Artist Shane Watt(Ironic considering the call is limited to US Artists).  So, I was really excited to find this Call for Entries from Sebastopol Center for the Arts celebrating the Map as Art.

CALL FOR ENTRIES: Mapworks

Check out the Sebastopol Center for the Arts online!Sebastopol Center for the Arts invites artists living in the United States to submit work to Mapworks: the Map as Art.  SCA is looking for art which references maps and mapmaking. 

This may be done directly or indirectly, metaphorically, or conceptually.  The terrain may be (but is not limited to) geographic, psychological, political, historical, cultural, mathematical, imaginary, or personal. 

All media is acceptable, including installation. Video and film should be submitted as a DVD in loops no longer than 4 minutes; selected artists will need to supply their own equipment for display.

DEADLINE: Hand-delivered entries will be accepted at SCA on Monday, August 30, between 3 and 6 pm.  Entries by jpegs on CD must arrive by 5 pm, on or by that date.  Please see prospectus for complete guidelines.

I never cease to be amazed at how often I trip across artist opportunities when on a completely different mission to find source or inspiration material for my own work.  While searching for some reference material to shoot my last piece “Greed” for the series Pyschomachia that I’ve been working on with Arizona Artist Jerry Portelli, I tripped across this great call for the Seven Deadly Sins from Miami’s Bakehouse Art Complex.

Call for Entries:  ¡Sin!

A national juried exhibition of original work inspired by a traditional concept of human transgressions. Lust, envy, gluttony, sloth, greed, wrath and pride have had an enormous impact on the moral compass of the modern world. With many different interpretations and understandings, each individual sin has been explored and exposed numerous times.

In its 2,600 square foot gallery, the artists, chosen by a reputable panel of curators, will display their works that are directly related to one of the deadly sins.

Each of the seven sins is explored, from their origins and nature, their opposing virtue, and their corresponding punishment through a variety of media and styles from across the country.

As an adult, there are two things for which I am always trying to invent excuses…eating dessert for breakfast…and buying cool artistic toys.  I have been rationalizing away “bressert” (as we call it in my house) for years, but now I have a great reason to buy toys…research. 

The Arkansas Arts Center in Little Rock has a Call for Entries out for the 37th Annual Toys Designed by Artists show with Purchase Awards totaling $2500.  The toys don’t have to be functional and is open to all artists internationally–not just regionally.  Take a look…

JUROR:  The juror for 2011 is Jim Bartz. Bartz has a BFA in Illustration from The Choinard Art Institute (now Cal Arts) in Los Angeles and as a working toy artist has taught in Northern California for 35 years. He is an active member in The Puppeteers of America.

HOW TO ENTER:  Complete the information, upload images, and pay a non-refundable fee ($15 for the first submission, and $10 for each additional) using the online form by September 13th, 2010.

GUIDELINES:  Each artist may enter up to three entries that are original, completed within the last two years, and not previously exhibited at the Arkansas Arts Center.

NOTIFICATION AND DELIVERY:  Notifications of selected submissions will be mailed beginning October 12, 2010. Selected works must arrive at the Arkansas Arts Center by November 12, 2010. The artist will be forwarded any sales inquiries and works not for sale may be noted on the entry form.

PURCHASE AWARDS:  Purchase awards totaling up to $2500 will be chosen by the Arkansas Arts Center after the selected works have arrived.

Works purchased through an award will become part of the Arkansas Arts Center’s Foundation Collection. 

Maracas by Miriam TimmonsSHIPPING:  The artist is responsible for the cost of shipping and insurance. Prepaid return shipping of selected work is required. A return shipping label must accompany delivered works. Works hand delivered directly to the museum must be picked up no later than 90 days after the close of the exhibition.

Any unclaimed artwork in the possession of the Arkansas Arts Center after 90 days becomes the property of Arkansas Arts Center Foundation.

More details on shipping will be provided in the selection letter. 

DIGITAL IMAGES:  The juror selects the exhibition based digital image submissions. Medium resolution images are preferred.

Resolution is sufficient when the image is easily viewed on an average size computer monitor.

Keep images free of identifying information (artist name, etc.,) as this information will require cropping the image.

Works with multiple components must be represented by at least one image which shows the complete work arranged for display. Entries are not accepted via email.

I know I keep stirring this pot, but if you want a solo show, you really have to make the effort to get one.  An Open Call for Proposals from a Gallery is what you should be looking for…and you know it.

Never presume that you know the value of a gallery or its exhibition space based upon its location or the generosity of the gallery’s submission process.  Do your homework on the gallery.  See if your work fits into the scope of the work the gallery seems to show.  Then send a well-crafted proposal.  You have nothing to lose, and rejection won’t kill you.  Here’s a great Call for Exhibition Proposals from the 1708 Gallery in Richmond, Virginia!

1708 Gallery presents an average of eight exhibitions a year by emerging and established professional artists from all over the world. Each exhibition is approximately 6 weeks long.

I spend a lot of time answering artists’ excuses about why they don’t enter shows or put their work out there.  I have heard them all, and some of them are legitimate. 

With the accessibility of digital cameras, photography has taken a hard hit in the retail arena.  Many consumers no longer see the value in purchasing photos that they believe they “can take themselves.”  Please don’t write to me about all the things wrong with that argument…I get it.

JUROR:  Thomas Bachand has been a professional photographer for over a decade, working in both traditional and digital mediums. His photography has appeared in magazines, advertisements, brochures, and textbooks – both in print and on the web. He writes on digital imaging issues for professional trade publications and lecturers on photography and technology issues.

Tom is the author of  Lake Tahoe: A Fragile Beauty. In addition to private collections, his photography can be found in the Bancroft Library and the California Historical Society.

Age:  Entrants must be at least 18 years old.  If  younger. a parent or legal guardian may make the submission for you.

Ownership: All submitted photos must have been taken by the photographer making the entry. If you are a parent or legal guardian submitting for a minor, please make it clear.

Digital Submissions: All submissions must be made by digital files through:

1.  Upload on VermontPhotoSpace.com or

2.  Sent via email to submissions@VermontPhotoSpace.com.  This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it along with an application form. There is a $5.00 surcharge for email entries.

3.  Images should be as large as possible but no larger than 1280 pixels on the longest side, type jpg – set to the highest quality. DPI is only relevant for output purposes and does not effect the stored size of the image. It can be set to any number, but if you must specify something go with 72 dpi.

RIGHTS:  Photographers retain all rights to their work, except for submissions accepted for exhibition: artists grant Vermont Photo Space the right to use their images to promote the exhibition and for display on VPS website and for inclusion in an exhibit catalog.

SALES:  For submissions that are accepted, photographers may offer their work for sale and establish their own price for framed and unframed prints.

For Vermont Photo Space framed work we retain 66% of the sale price.

For works framed by the artist Vermont Photo Space retains 34%.

For unframed prints Vermont Photo Space retains 25% of the print sale price.

Local sales tax of 6% is collected on all sales at the gallery.

Vermont Photo Space Gallery provides free matting and framing of accepted entries for the duration of each of our exhibitions, subject to standard sizes. Photographers set their own prices if they wish to sell their work, and retain all rights.

Make Me Famous

Have you ever wanted to be on the cover of the Rolling Stone?  Have you ever wanted your face on the side of a bus?  Maybe just a sandwich named after you?  Me too.

Would you settle for just having your artwork on a billboard?  Yep, Me too.  Here’s a great call for Entries for the Annual Embracing our Differences Exhibit in Sarasota, Florida.  And in addition to possibly getting your artwork on a billboard…don’t forget there is NO ENTRY FEE!

Embracing Our Differences invites artists, photographers, professionals, amateurs, teachers and students to participate in its 8th annual visual art exhibit celebrating diversity.

National and international submissions are encouraged. 

What a Wonderful Bunch by Manjul Rathee45 artists will be selected for the exhibit. 

The Embracing Our Differences exhibit will be displayed throughout the months of April and May 2011 at Island Park along Sarasota’s beautiful bayfront.

Since 2004, the exhibit has been viewed by more than 850,000 visitors. The exhibit will contain 39 billboard-sized (16 feet wide by 12 1/2 feet high) images of the selected artworks. In the judges’ discretion, an additional six “honorable mention” selections may be made.

Final selections will be chosen based on artistic excellence in reflection of the theme “Embracing Our Differences.”  The art-work will also be evaluated on how effectively it will read outdoors when enlarged to billboard size – 16 feet wide by 12 1/2 feet high.

Artists are encouraged to use bold saturated colors and strong lines.

Spread the Love by Rodney HarveyFinal selections will be made by a 3-judge panel of professional artists, curators and art professionals.

A total of $3,000.00 in awards will be presented.

Deadline for submission is January 10, 2011.

There is no submission fee nor limit on the number of entries.

Gender issues have been the subject of art for as long as art has been a subject.  “Girl, Please!” is a Call for Entries from the Woman Made Gallery in Chicago and is a great exhibit opportunity to re-examine gender issues from a slightly different perspective.

Kristen Carter is WMG’s Gallery Coordinator. She is a graduate from DePaul University, and has a BA in History of Art and Architecture with a minor in Studio Art, in addition to studying Art History and Fine Art in Florence, Italy. Carter is a Ph.D candidate in Art History at the University of British Columbia as of September 2010. She is also a member of the Keeper Team for ArtSlant Chicago where she writes monthly reviews about art exhibitions in Chicago, and writes for the online art magazine, Jettison.

Emanuel Aguilar is assisting Woman Made Gallery with its exhibition programs. In addition he volunteers his marketing skills to the organization. He is a Fine Arts Major at Columbia College with concentration in Identity Politics and a Minor in Marketing, and he studied in Florence, Italy at the Lorenzo De Medici University. Aguilar works for Chicago’s Jean Albano Gallery and A & D Gallery. He has curated several exhibitions, and helped found the online arts magazine, Jettison.

Do you have any idea how hard it is to cleverly sneak in a food reference in every post?  I really try to make a solid tie in, but it is harder than you might think.  I am inspired by silly puns and great pictures and phenomenal food, but I am stumped today…so you’ll just have to forgive the cliche today.

I also try to cater my posts to the national and international variety; however, sometimes I can be swayed to post a regional call.  I was swayed to post this Call for Entries, sponsored in part by the San Francisco Arts Commission, because I have a soft spot for photography and the region is pretty large and SFAC typically does a great job of stepping outside its own region to be a part of the national and international community.  So, even if you’re not from the bay area, check out the the San Francisco Arts Commission’s other opportunities!

The San Francisco Arts Commission Gallery (SFAC Gallery) and PhotoAlliance invite you to submit images of your work to be considered for the exhibition Night/Light. The San Francisco Arts Commission Gallery’s Art at City Hall program began in 1996 with the goal of bringing artwork with a social conscience into the seat of government. Fourteen years later, Art at City Hall has matured into a premiere program for the exhibition of photography by local, national and international artists.

Night/Light: Bay Area Photographers Take Aim After Dark

Artists are invited to  submit works that explore what happens after sunset and before sunrise. Nighttime images of interest will range from landscapes to portraits, from photodocumentary essays to fantastical narratives. They are looking for technical proficiency, creative innovation, and a wide variety of subject matter.

THE LOCATION

The City Hall ground floor exhibition space can accommodate up to 100 photographs. The jury will choose between three and ten images from each selected artist. Please do not submit less than three images. There will be no stipend for selected artists.

Please be conscious of the fact that the exhibition space at City Hall is a multi-use area that acts as a busy intersection for City employees, tourists, children and arts patrons. It is both a municipal cross roads and a place where individual concerns may be expressed. Please note that exhibited works will not be insured.

SUBMISSION PROCEDURES

Madrid by Christina SeelyEligibility: All living artists over the age of 18 who are residents of the greater San Francisco Bay Area are eligible to apply. All work should have been completed in the past five years.  (San Francisco Bay Area counties include: Alameda, Contra Costa, Marin, Napa, San Francisco, San Mateo, Santa Clara, Solano and Sonoma Counties)

Entry Fee:  No entry fee required

Medium, Framing, Delivery:  All two-dimensional works using any photographic process including digital and/or analog are eligible for exhibition. All chosen works should be delivered to the Gallery framed behind glass or plexi. All selected artists need to be able to deliver and pick up their work from San Francisco City Hall on designated installation and de-installation dates. Works that need to be shipped will not be considered.

Check out the SFAC store online!Portfolio:  Only digital submissions will be accepted. Submit three to ten images. Files should be on a CD in JPEG format. Image size should be no larger than 2MB or 8 inches in one dimension with a resolution of 150dpi.

Please submit an accompanying inventory sheet with the image number, your name, title, date, medium and unframed dimensions of each piece. You may also include a one-page statement about the work and a one-page bio.

No emailed submissions will be accepted.  Hand delivered or mailed applications only.  Submissions must be received by the Gallery by the deadline.  No exception.

Submissions Due: Must be received by Saturday, August 14 by 6pm. This is not a postmark deadline. No late entries will be accepted under any circumstance.

Special Note:  CDs will be returned only if a self-addressed stamped envelope with appropriate postage is submitted with entry.

Artwork & Photography Guidelines

Submit up to 2 images.

All works must be at least 300dpi.

Please send all images as JPG, TIF or PDF files.

Please include in the email your name, email address, home address, phone number, your full name, title of your works, and your Order Reference number.

Please mark your entry in the subject line with ‘Aesthetica Creative Works Competition Artwork’.

No alterations can be made once the submission has been received.

ENTRY FEE:  The entry fee is £10 (around $15 US).
