When I think of neon lights, I think of New York, Vegas, Hong Kong…and fast food.  Okay, that last one may just be me.  But did you know that Austin, Texas–proudly weird–is one beautiful neon spectacle at night as well?

Check out this Call for Art Entries from Austin Details Art +Photo called The Neon Show.  Your work doesn’t have to BE neon…only pay homage to it.  Here’s the full call…

Austin is a town that worships neon. It lights up  life all over the city, as it does all around the country. Austin Details Art + Photo Gallery will pay homage to the art of neon with the gallery’s Grand Opening and exhibit reception on September 16, 2010… The Neon Show.

Part of the Vanishing Austin series by Jann AlexanderYOU ARE ELIGIBLE TO SUBMIT if you are an emerging or established artist creating original works in neon or about neon, especially with neon itself, or by portraying neon in paintings, serigraphy, films/videos, traditional or digital photography, mixed media–any work where the subject matter shows neon.

HOW TO SUBMIT: You may submit up to four (4) works in any one  media for one entry fee of $35 plus sales tax (required by Texas state law). If you wish to submit works created in more than one media, please submit a separate entry for each form of media.

Entries will be judged on the basis of originality; on the basis of your creative style; and in consideration of your professional execution. If you work in neon, your  assistance in delivering, hanging and lighting your work is required for acceptance to exhibit.

  • You understand that the juror(s) may choose one, all or none of the works you submit; if chosen, you agree to provide the original(s) for hanging by the date they request in their acceptance notice, and you agree to allow Austin Details Art + Photo to publicize your work in any media and manner they deem appropriate. Of course you will retain all rights to your own original work(s) of art.
  • You agree that if your artwork is sold by Austin Details Art + Photo, they will deduct necessary presentation and shipping expenses and sales tax, and you will receive 60 % of the pre-tax sale price within 30 days of sale. CHEAP DELICACY?

I consistently receive requests for calls with no entry fee, and I do post No Entry Fee Calls as regularly as I can; however, sometimes you get the opportunity for which you pay.   You may love ice cream from McDonalds (I love the caramel sundae), but don’t expect an exotic delicacy for $1.

This printmaking call from the Leicester Print Workshop called smallprint: big impresion is a great example of an international call, art publication, a selling exhibition, and a traveling exhibition opportunity all in one Call for Entries.

Here’s the Call:

Leicester Print Workshop announces a call for artists for smallprint: big impression; a touring exhibition of contemporary prints that measure no more than 100 sq cm (approx. 15.5 sq. in.).

MEDIA:  Artists working in any printmaking technique.

COMMISSION:  Artists are advised that 50% commission will be taken from all sales; please set the selling price with this in mind.

The annual Art Buzz fine art search seeks passionate emerging and mid-career visual artists throughout the world.  Artists that are awarded with inclusion in the book, are chosen solely on the merits of their work—not their resume, background, biography, etc.  Unlike many other publications, artists can not buy their way into this book

ELIGIBILITY:  Open to all visual artists – worldwide – 18 years of age or older.  All the various mediums will be accepted such as: painting (oils & acrylics, etc.), drawing, graphic art, photography (includes digital), mixed media, fiber, print making, sculpture, glass, metal, pottery, jewelry, etc.  If you wish to enter two different mediums (ex. oils and mixed media, or sculpture and jewelry, etc.), you are required to submit an entry form and fee for each particular medium you enter.

Sometime you only get one shot.  You can’t unbake a cake or unburn toast. 

Here’s a Call for Entries from the Center Gallery in Wichita, Kansas that judges each photograph on its own merit for the 2010 Hot New Pics Contest, and not your work as a whole.  Depending on whether you see life as a glass that is half full or or a glass that is half empty, your work can shine even if the jurors don’t like EVERY piece.  Here’s your shot…take it!

See the Center Gallery Call online! Center Gallery in Wichita, Kansas seeks entries for a national exhibition that celebrates the range of creative exploration in photography, opening October 29, 2010.   Each photograph will be considered based on the merit of the single image.

AWARDS: Enter and Compete to become the “Hot New Pic” and receive a $250 fellowship award. 

FORMAT:  Submit images in jpeg format on CD: 300 dpi, no larger than 3000 X 3000 pixels.

I love found object art almost as much as I love crock pot creations made from leftovers.  Many emerging (not starving) artists struggle with not having the cash to participate in traditional media like oil painting.  Found-object assemblage could be the solution!

Here’s a great call from Monmouth Museum for Art from Found Objects, but you have to hurry…both postmarked and emailed entries must be received by August 6, 2010.  But look on the bright side…the materials are probably already laying around your house!

Art From Found Objects: A Juried Exhibition

Visit Monmouth Museum online!Museum Statement:  This exhibition focuses on artwork created from the undisguised, but often modified, use of common found objects that are not normally considered art, often because they already have a non-art function. Found art derives its identity as “Art” from the designation placed upon it by the artist. “Trash Art” is included in this exhibition as works are primarily comprised from components that have been discarded and then found. 75 % of the media used to create works for this exhibition must be from either discarded, reusable or found objects.

Juror: The juror is Harriet Taub, Executive Director, Materials for the Arts (of Cultural Affairs., NYC Department) 

Eligibility: Open to all artists world-wide age 18 and over. All artwork entered must be original creations by the artist and must have been completed within in the last five years.

Fabulous Fiber:  A previous Monmouth ExhibitSubmission Guidelines: Submissions are limited to a maximum of TWO pieces. Acceptance into the exhibition is not guaranteed with entry. The Monmouth Museum reserves the right to reject work delivered at the time of the exhibition that is not the artist’s accepted work. Selected artwork must be wired, framed (if media applicable) and ready to hang (no saw-tooth hangers). Artwork must be less than 7 feet in height and able to fit through a standard door. Pedestals must be provided by the artist for all sculpture entries. Entered and accepted work cannot be substituted and all work must be available for the duration of the exhibition.

Are you surprised that I haven’t mention Art Publication in a couple of weeks?  Me too.  I think you all know my opinion, but since we have lots of new readers lately…I’ll restate it for the record.  Opportunities for having your work published in art journals and magazines can only serve to help your career.  Think of it as the cherry on the sundae!

Exposure in print can open doors for you in venues far from your back door.  This Call for Entries from Cantaker Magazine is themed “The Ambiguous Object.”  Art Publication and a theme…how will I ever contain my joy?  Heheheh.  Here’s the call:

Cantanker Issue 10Theme:  The Ambiguous Object investigates questions of space, perception, projection, and meaning. The project will include work in all mediums that uses ambiguity to allow viewers both the literal and physical space to observe and imagine.

About the Jurors:  Cook & Ruud is a think tank and production team comprised of Rachel Cook and Claire Ruud. We seek to investigate new models for the production and presentation of contemporary art. Drawing on traditional models such as the for-profit gallery, the nonprofit space and the artist-run cooperative, our goal is to develop new models for supporting art work amidst a shifting cultural and economic landscape.
 
Previous Cantanker Magazine ExhibitSubmission Guidelines:
  • Works can be executed in any media, traditional or digital/new media. 
  • All works must be submitted digitally in high-resolution jpg files (300 dpi or larger).
  • Video work must be submitted for the jurying process as still images.
  • Work submitted may be in any size and will be appropriately scaled to fit the catalog.
  • Only recent or newly created work will be considered.
  • Submissions must be made online at HERE. Please note that submissions cannot be mailed.
  • Work submitted must be available for the group show.
  • All artists are welcome to submit except those who are members of the Cantanker staff.
 
Entry Requirements:

ART OF DEATH

I avoid all talk of death and mortality, in general.  My fondest hope is that we I finally slow down long enough to die…instead of a wake or funeral, my loved ones will plan an elaborate seven course meal for those nearest and dearest to my heart (and stomach).

I have been avoiding all acknowledgment of the aging process when at all possible.  However, the subject has started to creep into my work occasionally…we’ll call it a PREMATURE middle-aged crisis.  Here’s a great call for entries from Gallery 5 in Richmond, Virgina called Momento Mori that explores how you guys are approaching the subject of death and mortality in your work.  Check it out…

Visit Gallery 5 online!Gallery5 is now accepting proposals and visual submissions for Momento Mori, an exhibition that considers death and ephemerality in the modern era. The work assembled in this all media show will look at how artists are confronting these issues today and consider impermanence in cotemporary culture.

SHOW DATES:  Memento Mori will run from October 29th until Dec 17th 2010 and will coincide with an observance of Dia de Los Muertos throughout the month of November.

MEDIA:  Both two-dimensional and 3-demensional works are welcome.

My best friend, Toni Morton, is a fruit loop, an organic one, but a fruit loop nonetheless.  Since we were in college she been into lots of touchy, feely, spirtually-connected “stuff.”  Now she’s all green and granola-crunchy.  I respect her right to believe in whatever she likes…I even love her for it, and I am occasionally swayed by her green logic.  But admittedly, I love giving her a hard time about it too, ha.

This Call for Entries for Artists in Dreamland has that sort of soft, squishy, mystical vibe.  Get in touch with your dreams folks…you can do it.  Here’s the Call for Art Entries:

Call for Entries: ARTISTS IN DREAMLAND

Dream of the Crystal Tree (2008)The purpose of this exhibit is to showcase artwork that expresses the dreams that we all have in the night, and how our dreams and dream life inform and inspire the creative process and the creation of art.  This is a unique opportunity for our visitors to walk through a visual dream diary of the exhibiting artists.   

Eligibility: Original artwork inspired by dreams or series of dreams in the night.  Both the art pieces and the dream that inspired the creation of the art are juried.  The most important criterion is how the art piece is connected to a dream or series of dreams, to fit into the theme of the exhibit.  Dream artwork that have been exhibited in the dream art show 2008 or Artists in Dreamland 2009 will not be accepted.   

Media:   All two-dimensional and three-dimensional media will be considered, including painting, drawing, collage, mosaic, metal, glass, fabric, ceramic, sculpture and mixed media.  Film, video, and digital art will be considered if provision for displaying these media is provided or can be located by art exhibit staff.  All works accepted must be suitably framed and/or ready for display.  Works on paper must be framed under glass or plexiglass.  No crafts, kits, reproductions, or production please.   

Dream PodsAll entries must include : 

1.  Printed dream narrative to accompany the dream art in the exhibit, to illustrate the connection between the dream and the creation of the piece of art.  Dream narrative may be continued on the back of the entry form. 

2.  A brief artist statement and biographical statement, computer printed or typed on 81/2 by 11 inch paper that will be displayed in a 3-ring notebook, available to visitors to view in  gallery. Please note: artists’ statements must include the dream or the significant part of the dream that inspired the art and an explanation of how the work is dream-related.   

3.  Images of the artwork are to be digital; either JPG or PDFs will be accepted. 

4.  Every piece of art is exhibit ready and/or ready to hang.  No sawtooth hangers.   

Visit the Poudre River Arts Center online!5.  Shipping: Work should be shipped to or hand-delivered to Poudre River Arts Center on or before delivery deadline of Friday August 27, 2010.  Artwork must be submitted in reusable containers with enclosed prepaid return shipping label.  Only submissions with a physical street address included will be accepted.  If shipper needs phone number, please use 970-310-0906.  Please use bubble wrap or foam rubber and rubber bands – no tape or peanuts.  No wooden crates except for sculpture.  If you wish to have a receipt of delivery, please ship accordingly. 

6.  Liability: Kat Peters-Midland, DreamMosaics Studio, and Poudre River Arts Center will take all precautions to ensure the safety of all artwork.  All work will be handled with care.  The gallery will be staffed during all open hours of the exhibit.  However Kat Peters-Midland, DreamMosaics Studio, and/or Poudre River Arts Center will not be responsible for any loss, damage, or stolen artwork.  Any insurance is sole responsibility of the exhibiting artist.   

7.  Jury fee: $35 for up to 3 pieces of art that is in the exhibit.  Jury fee for additional art pieces is $10 a piece.

9. Judging: Due to popular demand, the People’s Choice award will be offered this year.  The award will be determined by a vote of visitors, which will be determined at the end of the exhibit on September 25, 2010.  First, second, and third places will be posted on the websites www.dreammosaics.com and www.poudreriverartscenter.com. 

10. An opportunity to offer prints and cards with images of the dream art in the exhibit is extended to each exhibiting artist; they will be placed in the gallery.

Many mallowmars ago, I swore off lists on ArtAndArtDeadlines.com.  You guys didn’t like reading them, and I didn’t like writing them.  We’re both happier now.  However…

I received a group of Calls for Entries (none of them regional) all from the same organization, the Arts & Culture Alliance of Greater Knoxville (TN).  I have entered two of the four shows before and was juried into both.  I like couldn’t pass on the opportunity for you, but I also didn’t want to get the email suggesting I’m playing favorites by covering the same gallery 4 times in a couple of weeks.  My solution?  Here are four of the Calls for Art Entries in abbreviated fashion:

Knoxville’s Arts District Banner Competition

The winning design will be printed on 26 banners to be hung from street poles in the Knoxville Arts District (primarily along the 100 & 200 Blocks of Gay Street). 

Banners will hang indefinitely.

Arts in the Airport

Enter up to five pieces of work, no entry fee.

Emporium Artist-in-Residence

This is a biannual opportunity for college students and other young, emerging artists providing free studio space at the Emporium in downtown Knoxville as well as a solo exhibition at the end of the six-month residency. 

Free membership in the Alliance for one year.

National Juried Exhibition

This is an annual juried exhibition showcasing work at the Emporium in downtown Knoxville from mid-December through end of January. 

Enter up to three pieces of work for $40 ($25 for members) and three additional works for $7/each ($5/each for members). I have had work in this show 2 years in a row.  Come on folks…if I can do it, you can do it.

You know how I love a theme.  I hear the snickers…I am proud to love a theme.  I once had an art critic wonder aloud (in print anyway) if my love for a theme didn’t occasionally cloud my curatorial vision.  Ouch, right?

The BECA Foundation is pleased to present SHIFT, an exhibition of new works of art + design featuring works that express, reveal, embody or address a change or movement on some level – be it social, cultural, physical, metaphysical, political, technological or any other relative shift.

For the purpose of this Call, submitting artists, architects and designers are encouraged to freely interpret the meaning of the word ‘shift’.

Those at least 18 years of age from any country are eligible to submit their works for consideration according to the guidelines below.

The BECA Foundation will host the exhibition at New Studio A.D., a new multi-functional studio, exhibition and event space located in downtown Albuquerque, New Mexico.

Check out Future Exhibitions at BECA ICAD online!The space allocated for the exhibition is 650 sqft (60 sq meters) with a ceiling height of 14 feet (4.3 meters) allowing the exhibition to fill a full 9,100 cubic feet (258 meters cubed) of viewing space.

Of the entries submitted, three individual artists, architects, designers, duos, groups or collectives will be selected by BECA Foundation directors + advisors to receive the exhibition opportunity which will run from September 1 – 14, 2010 with an opening reception from 6 – 8pm on September 3rd, during Downtown Albuquerque’s First Friday ArtsCrawl.

This is a multimedia and multidisciplinary exhibition without limitation therefore all works will be considered, including but not limited to: site-specific installations, painting, sculpture, mixed-media, drawing, printmaking, fiber, textiles, illustration, digital art, interactive design, photography, video/new media, film, performance art, music and sound focused works, 3D animation, graphic design, product design, furniture design, haute couture fashion + accessories, architectural interventions/designs and functional art, etc.  In other words, all creative culminations are welcome.

Check out BECA online!With a growing international BECA network of now 30,000, it is more important than ever for BECA to ensure that in addition to hosting the physical exhibition, the exhibition also be made available online at www.BECAICAD.org for those who are unable to attend in person.

BECA outreach efforts also extend beyond its own growing network via news releases, blogs, videos, flip publications and various forms of social media. This extended outreach for each exhibition results in the exposure of exhibiting artists, architects + designers work to over 750,000 members of the local, regional, national and international art + design communities.
