Check out this Open Call for Entries from Spaces.  They have their 2011/2012 Exhibition Application Guidelines out, and at the moment…there is no deadline.  Don’t use it as an excuse to procrastinate though…she says KNOWING that everyone has skipped that suggestion already.  🙂

SIMPLE AS PIE

I adore themed work, and I’m just narcissistic enough to love an autobiographical theme even more, ha.  As artists we’re programmed to put our demons and dirty laundry on display, but what about the sometimes subtle undertones that influence your work…like where you’re from.  Seems simple as pie, right?  Maybe, maybe not.

Check out this great Call for Entries from the Lander Art Center in Wyoming named As It Turns Out, I’m from… whose idea is to connect your work to roots of childhood or home or whatever works for you.  The deadline for entries is September 8th, and there are $1000 in prizes up for grabs!

CALL for ENTRIES:  As It Turns Out, I’m From…

At a conference where an artist once spoke about her work in detail, the audience laughed out loud when halfway through she said, “As it turns out, I’m from Pittsburgh.”  After learning so much about her artwork it seemed perfectly fitting that her large steel sculptures would be influenced by this historically industrial city.

Click for a Prospectus! Many of us make an exodus at some point in our lives– to seek out a life of our own.  Those who don’t make an exodus might gladly identify with their background.  Either way, our roots often appear in subtle and interesting ways even if we don’t intend for it to happen or notice until later.

THE THEME:  The object is to connect your artwork to your roots.  The connection may be as simple as the artist mentioned above from Pittsburgh who makes large steel sculptures.  Or it may be a connection more direct like painting place related childhood memories or using found objects from your hometown.  The interpretation of the connection is in the hands of the artist. Your “home” can be a city, state, country, culture or even a state of mind.  Whatever the connection, the Lander Art Center wants you to discover it and share it.

Check out Lander Art Center online!PRIZES:  $1000 in prizes are up for grabs!  $500 1st Prize, $300 2nd Prize, & a $200 3rd prize

JUROR:  Cheryl Delong of Global Arts Gallery, located in Lander, will be the juror.

COMMISSION:  The commission on sold artwork is 40%. Selling art is a priority for the LAC. We prefer art that is for sale, but it is not a requirement for show entry.

DEADLINE for completed entries, Wednesday, September 8, 2010.  There are 5 items needed to enter, see below.  Entry will not be processed without all 5 items.

NOTIFICATION will be emailed Wednesday, September 15, 2010. Please add frontdesk@landerartcenter.com to you contact list and be sure to write your email address on the entry form.

DELIVERY:  Accepted artwork is due Friday, September 24, 2010 at the Lander Art Center, 224 Main St., Lander, WY 82520.  Please package your artwork well and write your name on the packaging.

TO  APPLY: Please mail images on a cd labeled with your name to Lander Art Center, 224 Main Street, Lander, WY 82520 or email to frontdesk@landerartcenter.com:

Instead of turning to seafood paella–which will only make your rear end larger and, if you’re like me, leave you feeling guilty–think Spain…no, really.  Check out this opportunity for an Artist Residency Opportunity in the heart of Barcelona brought to you by the art lovers and supporters at  homesession.org!

HomeSession:  Artist Residency in Barcelona

Julie Guiches was Artist in Residence number 2Where?  The flat is a modern loft situated in the center of Barcelona, just near Montjuic Park, 10 minutes walking from the historic center. The area is quiet, lively and “authentic”.  There are 2 metro lines.  It is a 92 square meter flat with two patios (+ 15 square meters each).

What?  The idea of this residency is based on a real integration to local life: the artist shares the flat with the founders of the project: Jerome Lefaure and Olivier Collet. They receive artists for short residencies, up to one month.  Of course, the artist has his own keys during his stay.

They have sets, tripods and spotlights for photography and provide support for local contacts, equipments and eventual research of performers, locations, materials. The residency is mainly dedicated to creation, but they often organize a presentation of the work, that makes for a greater interaction with the local art community.

Delphine Pouille was the homesession 3rd residentAccomodation:  Sharing a flat enables the artist to enjoy freedom as well as better integration with the local life and cultural scene.  The private place for the artist is a closed alcove (5,5 Sq. m.) with a double sofa/bed, opening on the kitchen/living room. In the living room, a desk is reserved for the artist; Internet access is available in the whole flat.

Common equipment:
– broadband internet access
– kitchen, refrigerator, micro-wave, washer, oven, dining table chairs etc.
– bathroom, washing machine
– television, video, videoprojector, radio, CD player
– air conditioning / radiant floor heat

Residency as an interchange:  They want the residency to be a real opportunity for the artist and are prepared to be a link toward spanish artists and the local artistic community, in terms of making possible collaborations, four-handed creations or artistic events depending on the artist’s interests. Open studio and gallery exhibitions are organized if possible during or at the end of the residency.

Minutiae an installation at homesession by Daniel NeversConditions of the residency, fees and living expenses:  Due to the limitations of the flat, they only provide residency to one artist each period. The residency is planned for a short period (maximum: one month), and it is possible for a same artist to apply for two residencies.

The do not charge any residency fees to the artists. As an interchange, they ask the artist to give them a piece of artwork at the end of the residency. The artist will also finance their own living expenses as well as the trip to Barcelona on their own.

Application:  Please send a complete application form to:  info@homesession.org

The application form should include:

– a resume in english, french or spanish
– a cover letter or description of a specific project in english, french or spanish
– 10 to 20 pictures of your artwork.  For videos: < 6 Minutes

ONION TEARS

The thing I love most about being an artist is the creation of the work, but a close second is belonging to a community of artists.  Most artists are happy to have a local group of close knit creative types with which to share, and I am overwhelmingly fortunate to have all of you.  Okay, I’m tearing up more than when I chop onions, folks.

My point is…while many of us already have an artist family, we must remember that families have to grow or the lineage will end.  I have a friend in NYC who is trying to expand her fold.  Tryst Collective is looking for locals for a show called “BP’s Black Plague,” but never say never…send ’em your stuff because you just never know what could happen.

TRYST COLLECTIVE:  BP’s Black Plague

Check out the Tryst Collective's blog!NYC-based arts group, the Tryst Collective, is looking for artists, photographers, sculptors, crafters, musicians, etc. who would like to be a part of a *one-night* group show – an art, music, and networking event.

This is the first installment of a series of themed Trsyt shows that will be held throughout the year.  This particular show—BP’s Black Plague: a response in art and music— is centered around the reactions and responseswithin the creative community to the BP oil spill and/or our nation’s oil dependence.

Check out the R Bar NYC!Jessica Rowshandel writes, “We are still waiting for the date, but we are aiming for mid to late Sept.  We are looking for local people who can get to the venue the night of the show since it’s a D-I-Y sort of thing.

“The venue is R Bar New York City, which is located at 218 Bowery Street, New York NY  10012. The event will be ticketed.

Artists and musicians are encouraged to sell their work and network -making money and new connections.

Check out the PlanetSave.com perspective! We do not take any commission. We ask that the participants invite friends/followers because we need to pay for the space through ticket sales and more importantly, we are building a community.

“This is a very grassroots group and is held in nontraditional arts space, so participants should expect that. The venue allows us to hang work and we also have presentation and table easels. There will be a cash bar.”

BANANAS FOR MAIL ART

I love receiving personal mail.  As connected and attached as I am to my BlackBerry, I still love receiving the occasional postcard.  I get alot of funny mail, and most of you send me food related postcards…keep them coming.

The art of letter writing, postcard creating, and the sharing of artwork is alive and well in this Call for Entries from Guadalupe Art Dogs Gallery for Mail Art with the timely theme of Currency.  AND NO ENTRY FEE.  Take a look:

Call for Entries:  Currency Themed Mail Art Show

Guadalupe Art Dogs Gallery is located in the Old Ingram Loop artists’ colony on the banks of the Guadalupe River in Ingram, Texas, and they are calling for entries in its inaugural international Mail Art Show. The show will open on September 10th and will run through October 6. Entries must arrive no later than Saturday September 4th.

Visit Guadalupe Art Dogs Gallery online! The theme of this year’s show is “Currency,” a subject on almost everyone’s mind these days. At one time or another, in one place or another, virtually every kind of object has been used as currency – coins, paper, gold nuggets, shells, goats, chocolate, brides, baseball cards, IOUs – the possibilities are endless.

Also please note that “currency” doesn’t necessarily refer to a medium of exchange. For example, events can have currency (current events); rivers can have currency ( if you want to stretch the meaning a little and make a pun) and of course there’s always currency jelly ( or is that currant?) So you get the idea, right?  Take the idea of “currency” and stretch, fold, bend and mutilate it to come up with your own interpretation.

Visit Guadalupe Art Dogs Gallery online!GUIDELINES:  This show will be conducted in accordance with the principles that guide the Mail Art Movement worldwide. Submissions can be any shape, any size –  as long as they have the appropriate postage attached. They do NOT have to be flat two dimensional works, and they do NOT have to arrive in an envelope – although of course they can be two dimensional and be sent in envelopes if that’s what the artist wants.

ENTRY FEE:  There is no entry fee, and no limit on the number of pieces that can be submitted.  There will be no prizes other than the “People’s Choice” awards.

Click to get all the details for this Mail Art Show!DEADLINE:  September 4, 2010

As with all their shows, the Mail Art show will appear online approximately two weeks after the opening, so if you can’t come to see the show in person just log on and enjoy browsing.

Entries will not be returned unless the appropriate amount of return postage is sent along with the entry and the piece is clearly labeled that it is to be returned, with your full name and address. Those entries not returned will be distributed at no cost to area hospitals, nursing homes, schools, homeless shelters, and other places where they can brighten some person’s day.

Here’s a great Call for Entries from Vermont Photo Space Gallery called After Dark that celebrates both high drama of the night light as well as the mysterious shadows AND offers free matting and framing. Take a look…

CRACKBERRY

I am rarely more than 10 feet from my BlackBerry.  I am not proud of it, but it IS a fact.  I am not alone…this I know.  Granted, I no longer text while driving, but sometimes it takes me 3x longer to get where I’m going because of the sheer volume of times I have to stop to email, text, tweet…and take pictures.

Check out this all-hung Call for Entries for the National Cell Phone Photography Exhibition at the Southeastern Contemporary Art Gallery at Southeastern Louisiana University.  An academic show is always a great resume builder (yes, even the all hung variety), and best of all…NO ENTRY FEE.  Don’t miss this great opportunity to build your resume…
