NEW TREATS

My “pup” will eat anything.  Pepper, my four-legged child, is going to be a pup of ten-years-old soon.  As she gets older, there are fewer and fewer things she should eat.  The food she loves is of the cheapest, most fast-food sort of variety.  We limit her people food to fresh veggies & the occasional egg, but her dog food and treats have taken a huge turn.  The cheapest of food causes the worst of skin allergies, but for the love of this animal, I’ll probably be making her food and treats before long.  This next Call is for the love of animals, not just dogs.  Here’s your chance to make a difference, but they are taking the percentage from their share…

Check out this Call for Entries from LibertyTown Arts (Fredericksburg, VA) for a nat’l juried exhibit, For the Love of Animals.  A percentage of jury fees & gallery’s commission go to the SPCA.  Take a look…

star

Fresh, in-season foods are the heart of our family meals.  And as much as I love celebrating winter and the approaching new year with fudge and brownies and cookies and cocoa, the star of the season is always the clementine for me.  The supply is bountiful until January, but it is just enough to promise me that Spring really will arrive.  This next Call will offer you a little bit of fresh in February too.  Take a look…

ROOTS

I am grateful for the apples, but I am missing fresh local veggies already.  My local orchard serves as my farmers market most weeks.  With their cold storage program, I can get local apples for most of the year, but the veggies they offer are limited as of November.  Aside from winter squash, the only thing LOCALLY fresh I’ll have until spring are potatoes, onions and maybe a hot house bell pepper or two.  My normal $25 farmers market budget will be too much for a change.  This Call is a great use for the extra $. Take a look…

Spring is right around the corner.  I’m convinced of it.  Don’t talk to me about winter squash.  I know it is January, but I crave greens grown within the borders of my own state.  Beautiful, soft, bright chartreuse leafy salads spotted with gorgeous spots of crisp orange-y carrots–bring them on.  This next Call is interested in your thoughts about the new beginnings of Spring.  Take a look…

Pungent seems to be the portfolio view of my kitchen.  While taken individually you’ll find the full gamut of flavors from subtle pink salt to fresh pulled mozzarella, the overall impression most people would have after a quick kitchen tour would probably be more accurately represented by a jar of anise and potted mammoth basil plant.  What does your portfolio say about you?  The next Call asks this very question.  Take a look…

Everyone has to eat on the run sometimes.  Not every meal can be separated into  courses that stretch out over 2 hours.  But, compact meals don’t have to be of lesser quality just because they are rushed.  My favorite all-in-one breakfast is bananas with crunchy peanut or almond butter with a few berries chopped for the top. I suspect you already know I’ve got a little touch of the obsessive compulsive.  But some days, it really rears its head.  My family is trying to be greener, generally speaking, and I find it actually can be cheaper to live this way if you are careful.  My newest pet peeve is people who buy one item in the produce section and feel the overwhelming need to put it in a plastic bag.  You’re going to wash it and/or peel it anyway right?  Why does your single lemon / lime / onion / avocado need a bag?  Who designed this system.  I digress.  This next Call really wants the BEST in design.  Take a look…
