THEME: Environmental settings “…artists’ visions may transport the viewer to a lovely landscape, cityscape, seascape, or mindscape that invites them to enter their realm of beauty, uniqueness, serenity, etc. However, works reflecting human impact against the land, seas, etc., always major concerns, are encouraged as well. The earth’s landscapes are places of thought, meditation, reflection, tranquility, and at times sorrow. What’s the weirdest pantry staple at your house? It seems like a tiny thing, but my kitchen is rarely without thai chili paste; it has become my go-to source of heat. Typically it is a combo of red chili pepper, garlic, lemongrass, galangal (ginger), salt, shallot, spices & Kaffer lime. It is a balanced flavor for me, regardless of the origin of the dish, and it is easier than roasting a pepper from scratch every time I want to add a little heat. I add it to dishes time and time again. This next Call is one I will probably post time and time again because $9 is a do-able gamble for many of you, and I appreciate the projects they have funded thus far. See if it is right for you…

It snowed today, in March, in the South, after a couple of weeks of nearly L.A.-like weather. And, of course, I heard lots of grumbling about how produce prices were going to be sky high because of ruined crops. But, truth be told, most folks growing produce this time of year are growing in high tunnels that protect them from minor snow fall and light frost. And some fruit trees like apricots cold exposure amazingly well. This next Call offers exposure that is off benefit, not to be feared. Editor’s Note: I am well-aware of the hackneyed, trite promise of exposure as a payoff for exhibitions that only end up taking an artist’s time & resources offering nothing of real value in return. I don’t like them either. THIS is not one of THOSE as best I can tell. Unlike most billboard calls, there are NO production or participation costs outside of the entry fee. Blanch’s work has been featured in individual and group shows, books, private collections, and has been published in The New York Times Magazine, Vogue, and Rolling Stone. She also teaches at the International Center for Photography and is a member of the APA.

In 2013, the artist began using Photoshop to create constructed realities using her own photographic material. In 2017, Carol was awarded Critical Mass Top 50. In 2016, she was a finalist for Critical Mass and was invited to Review Santa Fe. Her images have appeared in numerous exhibits at The Center for Fine Art Photography, Houston Center for Photography, Phoenix Art Museum, Photo Place Gallery, Vermont Center for Photography, and A. Smith Gallery. The artist’s work has been featured in Adore Noir, Shadow & Light, Square Magazine, BETA – Developments in Photography, Adobe Create, and Lenscratch.

AWARDS: The curator chooses 1st place, 2nd place & 3 honorable mentions. The 1st place winner will receive a review by one or more curators including a Q&A about the photographer’s work. In addition, their image will be on the home page for a month. 2nd place & honorable mentions will have their image shown along with their bio, artist statement, C.V. and a link back to their website.

I’ve had many a conversation about why some foods, eggs & bread & oysters for example, come in dozens. I’ve heard that it is easier to divide because it has more factors (1, 2, 3, 4 & 6). I’ve heard that a bakers dozen (13) exists merely so delivery men don’t eat part of the order making the baker look like a cheat. I’ve heard it originated in the fact that there were 12 pennies in a shilling which made sales without change making easier. None of these are verifiable though. Did you know there is even a Dozenal Society that advocates for 12 as our base number instead of 10? While you contemplate the math of it all, this next Call will only choose a half dozen artists to participate in this show. Are you one of six?
