SUSTENANCE

When left alone, I tend to eat solitary foods.  I stood in my kitchen and ate cottage cheese (from the container & yes it was end of the container).  For breakfast yesterday, strawberries.  For Monday’s snack, pickled beets. But my meals with family or friends are balanced and diverse. I try not to overthink it; surely it is just simplicity, not laziness, right?  This next Call requires neither simplicity nor laziness, but you will be on your own.  Be brave…

Food with friends is my favorite event — trumped only by food, friends, family & art.  I am thrilled to be planning a 2016 trip to Seattle where cedar plank salmon and a Washington state wine with my favorite creatives are on my wish list.  Did you know that Washington is home to 850+ wineries & 350+ grape growers.  This Call hails from Washington and also appears prominently on my wish list.  It may be right for yours too…

and one alone

I don’t share well.  I don’t share anything well, but food is the worst.   I am not proud of it.  Maybe it is an only child thing.  I can logically know that a dish will be too much for me, but I will still not agree to share instead.  If I agree to a lets-get-one-of-each-and-share deal, we have to quite literally cut them in half upon arrival & exchange the halves.  Otherwise I spend the meal obsessing about whether or not my husband will eat more than his half.  I fall short of counting french fries–but just barely.  So, my submission to this next Call will likely be a solo one (although my better self sometimes triumphs); however, you are welcome to contemplate sharing.  Take a look…

My son is learning to cook.  More accurately, my husband & I are forcing our son to cook dinner once per week.  He has shown no really interest in producing meals–only eating them.  So, we are not giving him an option.  My concern is that if he doesn’t learn how, he’ll be forced to eat commercially-processed crap his entire life.  He doesn’t like cooking.  Doing anything solo the first time is scary, but my kiddo has turned it into a pressure-cooked affair.  Let’s hope it gets easier.  This next Call is YOUR chance to do art solo.  Don’t stress, just submit a proposal…

I have grits for breakfast 3+ days per week.  I have a favorite brand of organic, non-GMO grits that never cease to inspire.  On a busy morning, it is scrambled eggs over the top of cheese grits.  The next morning, the refrigerated left over grits are cut into cakes that are sauteed and used as the base for Eggs Benedict.  This morning it was Charleston-style milk grits with a poached egg & chorizo.  There is no end to the independent spirit of this simple staple.  This next Call is an inspiration of grits proportions as well.  Take a look…

Dragées remind me of Las Vegas.
