CALL for ENTRIES: Opulent Mobility 2019

Learn more about the 2019 Opulent Mobility exhibit!

practice what you PEACH

I reject the notion that extravagant dishes require exotic foods. I find that the simplest foods, treated extravagantly, remain my favorites.  Have you ever had a vanilla-poached peach? Top it with  freshly whipped cream and a drizzle of raw honey, and it makes for the the most opulent dessert (or breakfast) you could ever want.  I’ve spent many a year unimpressed by this simple stone fruit to only to realize it was my own lack of imagination at fault.

This next Call addresses mobility devices and their common ground the the common peach — a need for re-imagining.  Each year when this Call is announced, I revel in the notion of opulent mobility.  You need look no further than the work of curator A. Laura Brody as inspiration.  At its core, this show suggests that not only are we enough, but that we should celebrate our enough-ness.  That we deserve to move through our lives, through this world with a personal sense of opulence, with purposeful, extravagant creativity.  Sit with the notion of this Call and see where it takes you.

Check out this Call for Entries from curator A. Laura Brody for Opulent Mobility 2019.  This year the exhibit will be at the Dora Stern Gallery in New Jersey.  $20 Entry, 40% commission & a unique curatorial theme.  Stretch your creative muscles with this Call!

Did you know the red squirrel bites the side of the maple tree so that syrup will drip & dry on the bark for later snacking?  Clearly people aren’t the only ones with a sugar addiction.  Because we so rarely have pancakes at my house, my husband makes syrup from scratch when needed.  It is the only thing that keeps me from chugging it straight from the container some days.  Animals we are.  This next Call wants your animal perspective.  Show them your best…

SWEET harvest

While my friends are dreaming of picnics awash with super-size sandwiches and fresh squeezed lemonade, I crave fruit salads.  My childhood was fulled of canned fruit cocktail, coconut & marshmallow concoctions; so my adulthood is ripe with freshness. anyone?

How did operating a grill become a feminist issue?  I can’t tell you how many female friends I have that defer grilling activities to the men in their lives under the guise of not knowing “how to do it”.  Really?  Amongst this group of women who are financiers, scientists, diplomats & artists, no one can operate a grill?  Please.  Maybe they are just faking it, like me, to avoid the additional work occasionally.  *Shhh*  This next Call has NOTHING to do with the grilling of meat and EVERYTHING to do with feminism.  Take a look…

TREATS

I am fascinated by small food & small restaurants.  There is something special about the smallest of goodies served in the smallest of places.  One automatically assumes great care has been taken because you have less real estate literally & figuratively to make an impression.  Sel et Gras in NYC was always on my list to try, but I heard it closed.  Do you have any suggestions I should try?  I suggest you  take part in this next study in tiny art.  This could be a good opportunity for some of you.

I am queen of menu planning.  Every once in a while I decide to off planning for just winging it.  Well, that never lasts.  Now that we are planning for a farm of our own, I am considering the idea of buying protein for the entire year from a local rancher–like a whole cow.  The challenge would be to space out the protein so we are not forced to eat eggs only for the last 3 months of the year.  I suspect it will end in a lessened consumption of meat, but we’ll see.  This next Call is not unlike menu planning for a year at the time.  Please DO NOT MISS this chance…

Never underestimate the power of food.  Grapefruit is now known to interfere with over 70 medications, and many antibiotics have warnings about orange juice.  And I am certain that somewhere there are geneticists trying to modify both of these fruits to fix the problem–which is scary, but I digress.  The world is your buffet, but you have to make your choices carefully.  This next Call looks like a good call to me.   But, take a look for yourself…
