Frequently, the most memorable kitchen creations are happy accidents. As much as I love a list, theme and a plan, sometimes I find myself in a situation that forces me to create a masterpiece from what I have on hand or try something new on the spur of the moment. My favorite chicken-cheddar-broccoli soup came about as a necessary use of what I could find in the frig. Now it is a winter menu staple in our house. This next Call is a show that is both un-juried & un-curated, but I KNOW this organization. It will definitely be a show not to be missed, and you can be a part of it. Please investigate this one…

MEDIA: Open to 2D work. There is no official theme to this exhibit. However, works need to be gallery ready, no exceptions. This location is a family friendly venue; if your work contains explicit nudity, violence or other content not acceptable in a family oriented environment, it will be rejected.

DEADLINE: Delivered by December 27, 2014. Please remember to ship in plenty of time due to delays expected during the holidays.

NOTIFICATION: Ongoing. This is an unjuried show. You still need to email a submission of the work you intend to send.

MREs now have a strong secondary market–doomsday preppers. I don’t think that most people relish the idea of eating pre-packaged, processed military rations. They have improved great (or so I’ve been told); pizza is even on the horizon. However, I would think that preserving seeds, building hydroponic systems and farming fish would be better long-term solutions than MREs. AWARDS: AFSC will print & professionally display the chosen work in the traveling exhibit. The exhibit website will identify each poster by artist, title, short description & website. Artists will receive a $50 honorarium & a print copy of the catalog.

SALES: By participating in this project, artists are donating their work to AFSC to use in the traveling exhibit, in digital replicas of the work available for download for free. Work will be fully credited to the artists, with contact information included.

The Arts & Culture Alliance of Greater Knoxville announces a call for entries for its National Juried Exhibition of 2015. The Arts & Culture Alliance’s National Juried Exhibition was developed to provide a forum for artists to compete on a national scale and display their work. Approximately 40-50 fine art works encompassing all styles and genres from both emerging and established artists will be selected by the juror, Stefanie Gerber Darr, for exhibition in the main gallery.

ELIGIBILITY: Artists 18+ living in the US

MEDIA: 2-D (painting, drawing, mixed media, printmaking, photography) & 3-D (sculpture of all media).

DEADLINE: December 7, 2014

NOTIFICATION: Mailed December 22, 2014

ENTRY FEE: $40 for up to 3, $7 ea. add’l. Discounts available for members.

JUROR: Stefanie Gerber Darr combines her training as a museum educator, curator, collections manager and artist to develop meaningful experiences for people with art. Whether organizing public programs, curating exhibitions or teaching workshops, she dives into the project to create moments that stimulate the visual and offer reflection on social and cultural topics.

Darr currently manages the galleries and permanent collection at Arrowmont School of Arts and Crafts and is focusing on raising the awareness of the school’s past, present and future.

AWARDS: $500 Best in Show, two $250 Juror’s Citations, and a cash award for Best Work by an Alliance member

City life means access to international food. I’m meant to live in the country. It is just the way I am wired. My town has a population of approximately 3500 people. The downside? The only thing close to international fare is Thai (which I love), Mexican, Italian & Japanese. When someone suggests a trip to Asheville (about an hour from me), I start salivating for the taste of goat skewers. JUROR: Lynda Schlosberg is a Boston-based abstract artist who creates intricate and process-oriented paintings that are constructed using a series of interwoven layers of meticulous repeating patterns of dots, dashes, and grids using highly saturated, vibrant and illusory colors. It is through her skillful utilization of color theory and pattern that she constructs spatial illusions that expand and recede simultaneously, when viewed, fully exercise the mind and the eye.

Schlosberg received her MFA from the Art Institute of Boston at Lesley University, and her BFA from Ohio University College of Art. She is represented by Susan Maasch Fine Art in Portland, ME and by Kingston Gallery in Boston. She has recently partnered with the non-profit Art in Giving. She maintains a studio in Waltham, MA.

SALES: All proceeds from art sales go to the artist. Gallery 263 acts as the liaison between the artist and any parties interested in purchasing artwork. However, they do suggest a 30% donation to the gallery from any sales made.

I never thought about what astronauts ate when I was little, but I was disturbed that all they had to drink was Tang–or so I thought, ha. Gone are the days of strictly canned or freeze-dried foods in space. Now, those travelers have fresh fruits, vegetables and even waffles and scones. But, I think being faced with irradiated meat might make me a vegetarian in short order. This next Call contemplates the entirety of the cosmos, not just the menu. Investigate!

There’s a battle brewing in my house. We live within 15 miles of two apple orchards. We only have room for a 5lb. bag of apples each week. This time of year, Crispins (green/golden apples) get my vote, while my husband seems single-mindedly obsessed with Braeburns (red apples). I don’t care what color they are, but red apples tend to be sweeter. We’ve finally taken to trading off weeks. On my weeks, I get to eat my slightly sour raw green apples; on his weeks, we make apple tarts, pies & crisps out of the red variety.
