Did you know there is an edible form of the dogwood? Cornus Mas, aka Cornelius Cherry Dogwood, produces small ruby red or yellow fruit that makes great jam. ELIGIBILITY: Open to artists 18+ residing within a 500 mile radius of Knoxville, TN (as the crow flies–a straight line). Here’s a link to help you find out if you’re inside the radius. *We don’t often publish regional calls. This is a rare exception. I have a soft spot because it is so close to home.

MEDIA: 2-D painting, drawing, mixed media, printmaking & photography; 3-D sculpture of all media (may submit 2 images) & site-specific installation. *4-D art (e.g. video, performance & time-based) is ineligible.

DEADLINE: January 22, 2016

NOTIFICATION: February 12, 2016

ENTRY FEE: $35 for up to 3 (through Jan 15) & $45 for up to 3 (Jan 16 – Jan 22)

JUROR: Nandini Makrandi is Chief Curator & Curator of Contemporary Art at the Hunter Museum of American Art. She has been with the Hunter since 2004 and has originated over 30 original exhibitions in that time, including three nationally touring exhibition projects. Previously, Makrandi taught art history at the UT, Chattanooga and served as a curator at the Knoxville Museum of Art. Makrandi has a M.A. from Texas Tech & a B.A. from Mercer in GA, and participates regularly in the region as a juror, guest curator & speaker.

AWARDS: Cash awards totaling $4,000 will be presented at the exhibit’s Opening Reception –Best in Show, 2nd Place, 3rd Place, 2 Merit awards & an award from Fast Frame. All accepted artists are encouraged to attend the Awards Reception at The Emporium Center.

My chicken stock has been a little off lately. I make chicken stock at least once a week, and I thought I was doing everything the same, but all the dishes I make with stock of been a little off as well. The chicken soup & casseroles & pasta dishes were all missing something. Peppercorns. I ran out of peppercorns and used fresh ground pepper in their place. JUROR: A native of the South Bronx, Dr. Leslie King-Hammond was educated in the New York City public education system. After attending City University of New York and Johns Hopkins University she began teaching art history at Maryland Institute College of Art (MICA). Later appointed Dean of Graduate Studies she retired in 2008 as Graduate Dean Emerita. During her storied career King-Hammond has served as the Founding Director of the new Center for Race and Culture at MICA, received a number of Mellon Grants, and a Trustee Award for Excellence in Teaching.
Other honors include the Reginald F. Lewis Museum of Maryland African American History & Culture’s Chairperson of the Board and Chairperson of the Collections and Exhibits Committee; appointment to the Board of the Creative Alliance for the Artists, Baltimore, MD.; and project director for Ford/Phillip Morris Fellowships for Artists of Color at MICA (including Yale School of Art, School of the Art Institute of Chicago, Cranbrook Academy of Art, and California Institute of the Arts).

AWARDS: MTSU Arts Award $1,000, Dean’s Award $500, Department of Art Award $200, Award of Excellence $100, Up to 3 Awards of Merit $50 each.

Food oddities abound –from century eggs to snake wine. But I find the biggest food oddity is the waste of food in massive, organized food fights. How do you use tons of food to make a mess when it could be feeding someone? I don’t understand. I suppose that some make an argument that food art is also a waste; however, I think the difference in scale might be the defining factor. JUROR: Oliver Wasow is a fine art photographer and collector of found photography oddities currently living and working in Rhinebeck, NY. He received his BA from Hunter College and his Master’s from the Transart Institute, in Austria. His work is currently represented by Theodore:Art in NYC.

Wasow has had solo exhibits at the Josh Baer Gallery, Janet Borden Gallery, Tom Solomon Gallery in L.A., The South Eastern Center for Contemporary Art in N.C. & Galerie De Poche in Paris. His work has also been included in numerous nat’l & int’l group shows. His photographs are included in a number of private & public collections. He has been the recipient of various grants & awards including a Louis Comfort Tiffany Grant in 1999 and, in 2000, his 2nd NY State Council on the Arts Grant.

I have plastic envy. Hoop houses are sprouting up all over town as pre-planning for chances of upcoming frost. Last year our first snow came in October. Locally lots of folks protect their late Summer plantings from possible early frost while also giving them space to start seedlings in colder weather. Once the ground is frozen, installation becomes a much more complicated project. My house hangs on the side of a mountain. The only flat space I have for a hoop house is my gravel driveway, ha. The sight of a train trestle always conjures my cravings for hot chocolate. My entire life has been spent in residence within about a half-mile of railroad road tracks. I loved sitting on my front porch in the Fall with a cup of hot chocolate and listen to the trains pass. That all ended when I moved to Gatlinburg. MEDIA: Sculpture suitable for outdoor installation: a) must be capable of withstanding adverse weather conditions (high winds, below zero temperatures, snow storms); b) must withstand high traffic environment; c) should take into consideration the safety of the audience & d) artwork must be durable & require limited to no maintenance. Art must be installation-ready.

DEADLINE: Early: January 22, 2016. Late: January 29, 2016

NOTIFICATION: February 10, 2016

ENTRY FEE: Thru January 22, 2016, $35 for up to 3. Late entry, January 23-29, $45 for up to 3.

AWARDS: $3,000: Best of Show, $2,000: 2nd Place, $1,000: 3rd Place, $1,000: People’s Choice Award & $500: Two (2) Honorable Mention awards. In addition, all finalists whose works are installed will receive a stipend of $1,500 per sculpture—$750 upon delivery to the site and $750 upon removal*. The sculptures that are sold during the exhibition will be delivered by Dogwood Arts to the buyer at the close of the exhibition and there will not be a $750 removal stipend awarded to artists on those sold sculptures.

SALES: Artists may sell their work during the exhibition period. However, the work must remain on site for the duration of the exhibition. Every effort is made to promote sales. All sales are handled by Dogwood Arts who retains a 30% commission.

The curators and judges will select work based on the originality, uniqueness of the vision conveyed, quality of execution and how clearly the artist’s individual technique/style is presented in each work. The work can be expressed from realism to abstraction.

My whole house smells like peppers & basil at the moment. A recent Saturday trip to the farmers market ended with a huge surplus of these staples, but to prevent loss, I am dehydrated both. Then I will grind, chop or crumble most of these into a smaller form for storage and use this winter. This next Call could be an outlet for new work, but it could be an excellent way to compact and move out studies or older work. I encourage you to contemplate cutting down your work. MEDIA: Works on paper that will fit in a 9×12 envelope. Artworks may be any size, but they MUST fit in a 9” x 12” envelope to be mailed, although they may be folded, 3D or multi-part. More than one work may be mailed in each envelope. Acceptable media includes photography, drawing, painting, printmaking, collage, mixed media, cast or folded paperworks, artist books or digital prints. *A few brave souls out there might consider cutting larger work down to create more abstract work.

DEADLINE: November 16, 2015

NOTIFICATION: All hung show

ENTRY FEE: $5 per piece, limit 6

SALES: All artwork will be for sale for $100 US and FWCAC retains a 25% commission. Unsold works sent with an appropriate size self-addressed STAMPED envelope (SASE) will be returned.

*Editor’s Note: If you are careful (& have fantastic work, of course), you might be able to make a few dollars with this exhibit. Six entries ($30 USD), sent USPS Priority Mail ($6 USD) = $36. If 6 pieces sell for $100USD ea., & the venue retains 25% commission = $450 USD. Net before material costs = $450 – $36 = $414USD.
