APPETIZER

I wore flip flops on Christmas day because it was just that warm.  Then I got cocky and bought strawberries as if it were really Spring and I needed a treat for an upcoming garden party.  Ummhmm. The little red boulders the grocer sold me as strawberries had about as much flavor as, well, what I imagine boulders might taste like.  But this next Call is a REAL garden party.  Take a look…

Check out this Call for Entries from the Fine Line Creative Arts Center (St. Charles, IL) for Garden Party at the Kavanagh Gallery.  This theme could be just the inspiration to hang on to the promise of Spring. Take a look…

for the ages

The story of my life could easily be told with my culinary history:  the half-eaten worm that immediately proceeded my speaking in complete sentences (gross, but true), the cheese dogs of my youth (nicknamed angels riding horseback), the short-lived teenage infatuation with fast food, the pasta love fest of my twenties, and the ongoing efforts to repair all the damage done now that I know better, ha.  This next Call wants to hear your stories, but again, the food references are merely optional.  No artist statements required this time…

LOUISIANA
(or Iowa)

All people have something in common –hunger.  As a product of that hunger, we all have to eat.  Some of us are more interested in food than others.  Granted, not everyone is as obsessed as I am, but I’m also not the only one contemplating food several meals (sometimes several months) in advance.  There are towns where I feel right a home simply because of the food — like New Orleans, Louisiana.  This next Call, also food obsessed, feels like home too.  Iowa is calling…

PROTEIN

Food challenges abound: Meatless Monday, Veggie Thursday & others.  I full believe in $5 Friday.  It doesn’t have to be Friday, but, well, alliteration.  I like the creativity required to feed my family of three for $5.  My “go to” used to be chicken quarters (75¢/lb), but chicken that cheap can be scary.  But, I can serve the best of eggs as protein, grass-fed, free-range, antibiotic free FRESH eggs and still have plenty of cash left over to round out the meal.  Fried rice & quiche are family favorites, but if you are not an egg eater, dried beans are fantastic (but require prep time).  This next Call is also a shockingly good value for $5 as well.  Take a look…

CALL for ENTRIES: Garden Realm

POINSETTIAs

Holiday meals at our house are inevitably eaten around a floral centerpiece, or more commonly, a potted plant.  But, for love of our dogs, there hasn’t been a poinsettia in our home for a couple of decades.  Instead, we keep a Christmas cactus or two year round.  The only rule of thumb is to treat them badly.  My mother didn’t water hers for a year, left it on the front porch during multiple early cold snaps.  She pulled it in  & watered it mid-October, and it was gorgeous just in time for Thanksgiving.  So, as a rule, don’t eat your floral holiday centerpieces, but a Christmas cactus might protect your pets if they get the munchies.  This next Call is looking for your perspective on flowers this winter.  Take a look…

Whether a walk down a garden path, or discovering fragile gentle beauty on a woodland trail, flowers have been a silent still and inspiring subject throughout time.  Flowers express love, celebrate rights of passage, such as marriage, birth and death, providing peace for the weary and comfort for the stressed.  They are the passion and tenderness of the lover.  Comfort for the grieving.” — lithamoon.com

CALL for ENTRIES: Water Banners

Learn more about the Annual Banner Project from NMSU!no DISWASHER

I am preparing to live my life with only a human washer of dishes.  We’ve spent years eliminating excess stuff, downsizing possessions & square footage. Re-training ourselves after years of ingrained longing for “more” has been tough.  Beginning Spring 2017, we will have limited access to water & power –only what we can produce or capture.  The dishwasher will be the toughest obstacle.  Because of the enormous amount of cooking we do, our dishwasher cycles at least once per day, and there is still a sink full of hand-washable items left.  Maybe the answer is a really deep farmhouse sink to hide the dishes left after I’ve met my hand-washing-insanity limit.  This next Call honors water conservation.  Maybe they have a solution…

Check out this Call for Entries from New Mexico State University (Las Cruces, NM) for the Annual Banner Project, that is themed after the water-conservation show being held in conjunction inside the gallery.  This is a VERY visible show.  Take a look…

This is an exciting opportunity to have thousands of viewers see your work as they drive off of interstate 10 or 25 down University Avenue past the campus of New Mexico State University. *It is unclear whether artists will get to keep the banners after the exhibit.  I have asked.  Once I have an answer, I will update the post.

MILK

I’m not really a milk drinker –never have been.  I use it in cooking and to make cheese, but by the glass is uncommon.  It has in recent years, though, become helpful in the winter months.  In the winter, my writing for AAAD & creating my own art (both visual & performing) keeps me indoors most of the time.  A lack of sunshine for extended periods of time is often accompanied by a general malaise –the winter blues.  Milk isn’t a miracle drug, but the boost of Vitamin D does seem to help.  This next Call wants your perspective on blue.  Take a look…

Did you know that pine needles are edible, sort of?  If you love the smell of holiday wreaths and garlands made of fresh pine, you can get that same sense of comfort from tea brewed of pine needles.  Be careful NOT to use yew, Norfolk Island Pine or Ponderosa Pine (poisonous) and be sure to forage for your needles to help avoid fertilizers and pesticides.  It’s a different way to look at those ever-present evergreens.   This next Call wants to see your different take on plants of all sorts too.  Deck the halls…
