Acorns are edible for people, not just bears; did you know?  Why didn’t anyone tell me before now?  I didn’t know until I tripped across this article from two years ago.  I have a yard FULL of eastern white oaks, and I really thought they existed only to endanger my life via twisted ankle or concussion, but I am always open & excited to try a new food source.  (I’ll let you know how it goes.)  Meanwhile, this next Call is Open too.  Take a look…

CALL for ENTRIES: Stories, Parables & Tall Tales

Learn more about the Stories, Parables & Tall Tales exhibit from Studio Channel Islands!DINNER anyone?

I’ve been eating with strangers lately.  That is, I’ve had the privilege of eating family-style  –from farm-to-table dinners with 20 at a table, or a restaurant with 8 at a table.  It reminds me of stories my grandmother used to tell of Sunday dinners in Big Stone Gap, Virginia, when her family, that included 10 children, would just lay a sheet over the home-grown & prepared food on the dining room table after everyone ate, just in case friends or neighbors dropped by.  They didn’t have much except a wealth of food to share. I love the planned inclusion of unplanned guests and the stories that must have inevitably followed. This next Call offers you an opportunity to tell your own story.  Don’t miss the opportunity…

JUROR: Often dreamlike and enigmatic, Christine Brennan’s work features a host of symbolic and allegorical reference. Brennan’s images draw from the unconscious, leading the viewer into richly-lit narratives that evoke personal stories and associations.  As a painter and printmaker, Brennan works in oil on paper or board and hand-colored linoleum block prints. Never setting out to illustrate a specific theme or story, the artist creates each image as she goes, changing and shaping it along the way.

AWARDS:  1st Place $500, 2nd Place $200 & 3rd Place $100

CALL for ENTRIES: Still Life

Learn more about the Still Life exhibit from Art-competition.net!goin’ BANANAS

The landscape of my kitchen counter is changing. My day is incomplete without fresh fruit. While the happy dance of the clementines begins soon, it is otherwise just the banana bunny hop for most of the winter.  I find that most in-season winter produce is either not finger food (cranberries, pomegranates) and/or expensive (guava, kumquat, kiwi).  So clementines & bananas still life it will be.  This next Call invites you to create your own still life.  Orange you glad? Learn more about Valdosta National 2017!hopefully NUTTY

I spent 10 years of my childhood as a resident of the state of Georgia in the United States. Many of my neighbors ran cottage food businesses.  In the State of Georgia, you can apply for a commercial license to produce a limited variety of foods in your home kitchen for sale to the public — like breads, candy, jams, jellies, nuts & more.  This “maker culture” shaped my entrepreneurial spirit as a child. Kudos Georgia.  This next Call also hails from Georgia and should inspire the maker in you.  Take a look…

My first encounter with a peppercorn was in olive loaf. My father deluded himself into the notion that a seven year old was the target audience for this studded meat product.  I survived.  I love olives, and fresh peppercorns make my stock & dressings sing. CALL for ENTRIES: Hometown

Learn more about the Hometown Exhibit from L.A. Photo Curator!easy being GREEN

I’m still eating local greens even though it is almost November.  Pressure-cooked mustard & collard greens served with a dash of vinegary hot sauce is a rite of passage in the South.  You aren’t really an adult if you don’t love cooked greens, but I’ve never had a taste for anything except creamed spinach, making me feel like the hometown heel.  But, I am newly-enamored of raw greens.  Everyone yearns for Spring lettuce, but my Fall salads of peppery mustard greens highlight my recent menus–still available locally, and they last forever.  What reminds you of your hometown? This Call wants to see your hometown images.  Take a look…

Grocery lists should be derived from menus, however, I lack the discipline to make a menu every week and the fortitude to endure a grocery trip long enough to sustain a week of daily menus.  As a result, we buy random groceries and the menus are developed based on what we happen to have on hand at the moment.  The advantage is that sometimes we trip across unbelievable recipes just by narrowing the ingredients by availability.  This next Call chooses a theme AFTER receiving the submissions.  How fun is THAT? You don’t have to fit a mold; the MOLD fits you…

Underground farming is a thing now.  I’ve been looking for a “perfect property” for years now.  Something small, affordable, naturally rich soil and easily irrigated.  It is a huge wish list.  But now, there are farmers that are choosing to go underground, create their own soil conditions, or use looped hydroponic irrigation — making double use of every square foot.  It is kind of brilliant.  This next Call comes from underground as well.  Investigate Excavate…
