CALL for ENTRIES: Black & White

Learn more about the Black and White exhibit from BWAC!LOVE ME love me not

Beet wars 2017 just ended.  At least once per year, I post something random about eating beets on social media.  Every time, it ends in my friends arguing the merits, or not, of this ever-controversial veg.  I am amazed by how passionately people love or hate beets.  The confusing ones are the folks that love merlot & hate beets.  I’ll never understand the disparity.  They both have that same from the earth pungency, so shouldn’t it be a black & white issue?  This next Call is definitely all about the black & white of it all.  Take a look…

Check out this Call for Entries from BWAC (Brooklyn, NY) for Black & White.  Take advantage of a discount for early entry, a distinguished juror & significant cash awards.  This is a great opportunity…

“Black and white is primal, the underneath, the foundation, of the opuce of color; black and white is where we register motion and, when the cones do not have sufficient light, our rods optimize our survival in the night woods.  ‘Black & White’ intends to explore this underground of survival and few words.” –from bwac.org

CALL for ENTRIES: Axis 12th National

Learn more about the 12th Annual National Juried Exhibition from the Axis Gallery! penny FOODS

Have you noticed that the only a handful of foods are regularly sold in dozens.  Eggs & pastries are most common, but there are a few others, like oysters and hot wings.  As I understand it, it started because 12 pence = a shilling, and a shilling was a convenient unit of measure for 12 eggs, a pence per.  This next Call costs more than a shilling to enter, but it is the 12th in the series.  Open to any media…

JUROR:  Founder of the highly controversial Coagula Art Journal, Mat Gleason is an internationally recognized art critic and curator of contemporary art.  Gleason’s sharp analytical tongue and ability to articulate aesthetics served him well in analyzing and critiquing competitive body painting in the Ru Paul-hosted “Skin Wars: Fresh Paint”, the television series where he sat as one of the regular judges in its lone season on network television.

He has lost count of the number of exhibitions he has curated and while blogging, writing about art and continuing to publish a milder print version of his magazine, operates Coagula Curatorial, his gallery of contemporary art on Chung King Road in L.A.’s Chinatown. A southern California native who hates all of the Bay Area’s sports teams, especially the A’s, he lives with his wife (artist Leigh Salgado) and dog (Aybar) near the city of Vernon, just south of Downtown L.A.

“One of the first things I talk to my students about is the challenge of experiencing a scene or subject with four or five of our senses and then translating those feelings into a two-dimensional frame and image. I might be standing on a beach, watching a beautiful sunset, feeling the sand beneath my feet, listening to the waves crash and the gulls chirp and smelling the salty ocean breezes, but how do I distill all the sensory information, other than visual, into a photograph?” –from Peter Bennett via laphotocurator.com

CURRY from a cart

There are glorious benefits to living rurally, including quiet solitude and night-time darkness.  But, I’ve always admitted that there are detractions, many of them food related, from the long haul to the grocer and a lack of food diversity.  Currently, I really miss street food or living in a city where wanting a snack just means I have have to walk a few yards or a block from my front door to whichever vendor is occupying the corner today.  I miss it.  This next Call wants to see your best street impressions.  Don’t miss this chance…

CALL for ENTRIES: Flowers, Plants & Gardens

Learn more about the Flowers, Plants and Gardens exhibit from Art-competition net!aztec TEA

We move to our “clean slate” apartment in about 6 weeks.  It has a good-size front porch but almost no yard.  The only green in site is a decayed and crumbling stepped flower bed next to the driveway.  I don’t think I can really grow a lot of food, but I have a friend that says she can get me a cut of epazote, a Mexican herb that’s hard to find in these parts.  Maybe if I surround it with marigolds and citronella, I might be able to save it from the bugs & their furrier 4-legged neighbors.  This next Call wants to know about your flowers, plants & gardens.  This is a perennial favorite, ha…

COOKING in paper

I dislike washing dishes, just like everyone else.  I have had a dishwasher for the past 10 years, but I still try to be conservative in usage.   But as of June 1, we are downsizing to an apartment that does not have a dishwasher.  And, while I will still avoid disposables, like paper plates, I am a strong advocate of cooking “en papillote”.  Not only is it a great way to produce tender, flavor-infused dishes, it also produces one less dirty dish.  This next Call also extols the praises of working with paper. CALL for ENTRIES: Tiny Monsters

Learn more about the Tiny Monsters exhibit from the FE Gallery in Sacramento, CA! gooseBERRIES

Pineapples are showing up in mass at every grocer right now.  I can’t eat enough to take advantage of the availability, so I was contemplating making jelly or jam.  As you may know, pineapple fights the jelling process, so you have to use nearly twice as much pectin to make it work –which defeats the purpose of buying on sale.  Maybe I can freeze the cleaned pineapple and wait for gooseberries come into season.  These little treasures have huge amounts of pectin and can be made into jelly without ANY additional pectin.  This next Call wants your little treasures, but they must be monstrous…

I have a complicated relationship with food.  I eat what I want, when I want.  I have a complicated relationship with moderation too.
