Her recent projects include exhibitions on the whaling scenes of Joseph Mallord, William Turner and on The Met’s collection of Pre ‐ Raphaelite art and design. She publishes and lectures on topics ranging from Impressionist painting to Symbolist drawing, and was previously a juror for the National Arts Club’s Artist Members Exhibition.

Yellow tomatoes abound at my grocer.  For some reason, my options are limited to uber-sweet cherry tomatoes, rock-hard-Brazilian-hot-house slicing reds or romas, trendy-but-mealy brown and entirely-too-sweet yellow tomatoes.  I like my tomatoes super acidic and red or tart, green and fried.  I know it takes all kinds, but I am looking for just one specific color of the rainbow. Cooking is a constant exercise in recycling & upcycling in my house.  A whole chicken will provide a dinner, chicken salad for lunch, broth for future soups, scraps for breakfast hash or lunch tacos plus a treat or three for the pup.  My least favorite of all these is the original chicken dinner.  The upcycled & recycled varieties are always superior, just like the media for this next exhibit.  Never have an empty plate by expanding your menu by incorporating what you already do…

I will put salt & pepper on anything.  Years of deliberate pause has taught me that not all things need salt, but it has been a hard lesson to learn.  I have super-low blood pressure (70 over 40, no really), and my doctor surmises that I just self-medicate with salt.  Who knows?  Changing from the black & white of salt and pepper to the pink of Himalayian salt and red/green of whole peppercorns in grinders really helped me break the habit.  This next Call is a great reason NOT to stray from black and white.  Take a look…

While ceramics have been used for both practical and aesthetic reasons for thousands of years, the medium has experienced an amazing renaissance among artists in the past decade. Today ceramics are integrated into contemporary art.  Art In Clay II: Figuratively Speaking is about figurative sculpture in clay representing a range of work from representational to abstract, traditional to experimental.

ELIGIBILITY: Open to all U.S. artists 18 years+

MEDIA: Open to clay workThe artwork cannot be functional –production work and commercially manufactured pieces are not acceptable.  Mixed media is acceptable as long as clay is the dominant component of the piece (at least 75%).

I had brown tomatoes at dinner tonight, and they were NOT rotten.  They were Kumatoes–a hybrid developed in Spain.  I noted they were a touch sweeter, but less exotic tasting than they appeared.  But, I can’t resist a weird fruit or vegetable, so I tried them as a part of a Caprese Salad.  Pretty, but forgettable.
