GIMME S’MORE TIME

Recharging your batteries or becoming inspired…sometimes you just need some time away.  I am planning a short weekend jaunt to a neighboring mountain town to sit around a campfire, roast s’mores and act like a tourist.  I simply can’t wait…just a few days away from reality to get in touch with my inner dreamer again…the one that believes all things in life are possible.

If you need more than just a weekend away, check out this Italian Residency opportunity brought to you by the Martingnano International Residency for Artists.  Treat yourself to submersion in the culture and experience of a community that nurtures art and artists.

ITALIAN ARTIST RESIDENCY OPPORTUNITY!

Martignano International Residency for Artists – MIRA, supports international artists and promotes the cultural exchange between artistic disciplines and international experiences. At MIRA they have created a pristine environment exclusively for the interaction of the artists and their work needs.

Martingnano International Residency Program!Their institution offers 4 furnished rooms, 3 with private bathrooms, which serve as living spaces. They are all adapted with work desks for the artists to be able to create also in the comfort of their room.

The grounds are divided between 2 buildings, one having the main shared work studio, and the other permitting the artists to work freely throughout the house in order to create wherever they feel more at ease.

They assist the artists as much as possible in order for them to concentrate solely on their creating. Once a month they organize an open house in which they invite local artists and the surrounding community in order to further promote the cultural exchange between the artists and their adopted home.

Also, they are fortunate enough to be sponsored by the Comune of Martignano who have kindly donated the gallery installations at the Palazzo Palmieri, every two months, in order for their artists to have an exhibition.

Artists, critics, press and the community at large are invited to attend. If funds permit, a brochure is printed to document the exhibition.

Studios are available from one to six month periods. They have found that one month is barely enough to arrive and adapt, let alone create and exhibit.

Martingnano International Residency Program! For stays of longer than three months, the options for those non European Community Citizens are to either leave the Schengen Zone and return, or applying for an extension on the tourist visa. Please check ahead with your local embassy, and they will check on their side.

There is a monthly fee charge of between 700 and 900 Euro depending on the room chosen.

This money goes solely to the maintenance and continuous improvement of what they can offer to their attending artists.  MIRA does neither cover living / material nor travelling expenses, although they will be there to greet you either at Brindisi International Airport or the train station at Lecce, and their driver will take to the airport again at the end of your residency.

SHELLFISH

Need a little inspiration?  I turn to food, and I suspect that comes as a surprise to not a one of you.  I miss paella de mariscowhich ceased to be an option when my husband developed an allergy to shellfish…but I digress

Instead of turning to seafood paella–which will only make your rear end larger and, if you’re like me, leave you feeling guilty–think Spain…no, really.  Check out this opportunity for an Artist Residency Opportunity in the heart of Barcelona brought to you by the art lovers and supporters at  homesession.org!

HomeSession:  Artist Residency in Barcelona

Julie Guiches was Artist in Residence number 2Where?  The flat is a modern loft situated in the center of Barcelona, just near Montjuic Park, 10 minutes walking from the historic center. The area is quiet, lively and “authentic”.  There are 2 metro lines.  It is a 92 square meter flat with two patios (+ 15 square meters each).

What?  The idea of this residency is based on a real integration to local life: the artist shares the flat with the founders of the project: Jerome Lefaure and Olivier Collet. They receive artists for short residencies, up to one month.  Of course, the artist has his own keys during his stay.

They have sets, tripods and spotlights for photography and provide support for local contacts, equipments and eventual research of performers, locations, materials. The residency is mainly dedicated to creation, but they often organize a presentation of the work, that makes for a greater interaction with the local art community.

Delphine Pouille was the homesession 3rd residentAccomodation:  Sharing a flat enables the artist to enjoy freedom as well as better integration with the local life and cultural scene.  The private place for the artist is a closed alcove (5,5 Sq. m.) with a double sofa/bed, opening on the kitchen/living room. In the living room, a desk is reserved for the artist; Internet access is available in the whole flat.

Common equipment:
– broadband internet access
– kitchen, refrigerator, micro-wave, washer, oven, dining table chairs etc.
– bathroom, washing machine
– television, video, videoprojector, radio, CD player
– air conditioning / radiant floor heat

Residency as an interchange:  They want the residency to be a real opportunity for the artist and are prepared to be a link toward spanish artists and the local artistic community, in terms of making possible collaborations, four-handed creations or artistic events depending on the artist’s interests. Open studio and gallery exhibitions are organized if possible during or at the end of the residency.

Minutiae an installation at homesession by Daniel NeversConditions of the residency, fees and living expenses:  Due to the limitations of the flat, they only provide residency to one artist each period. The residency is planned for a short period (maximum: one month), and it is possible for a same artist to apply for two residencies.

The do not charge any residency fees to the artists. As an interchange, they ask the artist to give them a piece of artwork at the end of the residency. The artist will also finance their own living expenses as well as the trip to Barcelona on their own.

Application:  Please send a complete application form to:  info@homesession.org

The application form should include:

– a resume in english, french or spanish
– a cover letter or description of a specific project in english, french or spanish
– 10 to 20 pictures of your artwork.  For videos: < 6 Minutes
