ARTIST of the DAY: Jylian Gustlin

I have a well-known soft spot for portraiture.  A significant part of my own work has revolved around facial expression, but abstract art calls to me.  I buy abstract work.  I find that my interpretation and feelings about this work evolves as my time with it increases.  I am always delighted to find a marriage of the abstract and the figurative. Today’s AAAD Artist of the Day, Jylian Gustlin gives me just that marriage. (continues below)

ARTIST of the DAY: Oriol Malet

I find artist inspiration in unexpected places.  Lately, I’ve had a rash of commissions that have come musicians –from punk to folk.  My brain processes the sound aesthetically and the imagery just appears.  I appreciate the opportunity to exercise my creative brain differently. Today’s AAAD Artist of the Day, Oriol Malet finds much of his motivation in jazz. (continues below)

Malet assures us that he does not take his references from graphic design but from literature and music. Oriol’s drawings derive more from the work of Boris Vian or Charles Mingus than from any visual artists.  He has been studying music for five years on the drums he has played all his life. Now, in addition, in honor of his devotion to jazz, he has begun to play the trumpet.

In addition to being the Editor of AAAD, I spend a considerable amount of time consulting with artists individually on branding their work, unifying their message & the philosophical packaging of their work for consumption.  Technology is vehicle that allows delivery of work that is complete in contrast with that very technology.  I appreciate the push to expand my knowledge, to remain relevant, to drag a few artists wit me. Today’s AAAD Artist of the Day, Alicia Tormey finds her own motivation in testing boundaries. (continues below)

ARTIST of the DAY: Adam Flynn

In a house with a Music major & an English major, you’d be surprised how of the words “let’s do the math” are uttered.  It is actually a reference to time.  Because our performing careers require extensive preparation & travel, we “do the math” backwards to calculate leave times, load-in times, travel times.  Language is defined by the user.  Sometimes it joins us; sometimes it divides us.  When teaching branding, I like to remind people that art is inclusive but labels like illustration & graphic design are often consider exclusive. Creativity boxed. Today’s AAAD Artist of the Day, Adam Flynn invites you to do the math and appreciate creativity in all its many boxes. (continues below)

ARTIST of the DAY: Laurie Freitag

balls balls BALLS

February is a building month, a building, re-building, structuring, restructuring month for me.  Some of the balls that I am supposed to keep in the air can sit idly on the ground for a few weeks in February while I throw the other balls a little higher hoping they gain air.  That’s the dream —an illusion, really. Most days I feel like all the balls are on the ground, piling up around me.  Today’s AAAD Artist of the Day, Laurie Freitag has clearly been lurking in my psyche. (continues below)

 “‘The Lost Years’, of which ‘Balls’ is a part, focuses on the years before five in which most people cannot remember. I look at photographs of myself before five and see how happy I was and wish I could remember those times. Does the mind remember sad times more than happy times? Was I posing for the camera with a smile? What was real?”

I try to live transparently. I have no illusions about online safety or personal privacy.  As a result, it is fairly easy to find out anything you could ever want to know about me.  I find it peaceful, really (the not hiding of it all).  There ARE days however when my want to be transparent gives way to discomfort of perceived invisibility –both physical, artistic & emotional.  Today’s AAAD Artist of the Day, Cristina Troufa questions and explores the self as other through an extraordinary series of self-portraits.   (continues below)

I’ve been searching for the perfect new home. I have fallen in love with the most imperfect 10 acres.  Someone else out bid me because my budget is ridiculous.  Two weeks later, their contract dissolved.  I have a second day to hold the hope of imperfection in my heart. Fingers crossed.  Today’s AAAD Artist of the Day, Sue Hotchkis celebrates that same beauty.  My totem art for the day. (continues below)

All of us wear a mask.  I don’t believe every mask is a deceit or even a conscious choice, but it still a mask, deceptive or not.  I have days when a wolf in sheep’s clothing seems an overly-dramatic cliche.  Today’s AAAD Artist of the Day, Miguel Vallinas creates the mask that truly fits. I have spent a lifetime not buying still life work, because it doesn’t usually call to me.  I like my work non-representational, controversial, emotionally raw.  But I keep finding work that defies my notion of what is and is not still life.   Today’s AAAD Artist of the Day, Karen O’Neil creates contemporary work with bright hues that only work because of her masterful use of neutrals –grays abound.  (continues below)

In a Walmart world where most everything can be had for $10 or less, how do we avoid reinforcing a culture that regards everything is disposable?  How do we discourage casual consumerism and reinforce long-term responsibility of ownership?  Value.  Buy what you LOVE.   Today’s AAAD Artist of the Day, Emily Shane upcycles much-loved cast-offs of days past.   I LOVE the texture AND how illustrative this work is of falling down the reading “rabbit hole”.
