CALL for SUBMISSIONS: $1000 Artist Grant

TOFU no, VEGGIES though

Testimonials and recommendations are great, but my taste buds choose for themselves.  As a welcomed side-result of writing these posts, I receive a significant amount of unsolicitied recommendations for brands of food that are meant to change my mind about tofu, kale & collard greens.  And, I diligently try most to of the suggests, just in case.  On occasion I muse to myself, “that wasn’t half bad”, (never about tofu though), but the important thing for me is to not get stuck in a rut or trust a single encounter as the definitive one.  Did you know that I avoided asparagus for 20 years because of my experiences with the canned variety as a child.  I missed 20 years of green tree goodness.  Never again.  So, send me your food suggestions, and I’ll send you my art experience suggestions.  Here’s one now.

Yesterday, I offered a Call that chose random winners for supplies in a specific media, but today I offer a Call with a juried winner of cash open to wide array of media.  More accurately, this is a purchase award of sorts.  You do not have to submit the work that will be exchanged for the $1000 –that can be negotiated later.  They even pay shipping costs to get the work to them. I’ve been touting this opportunity for years, so there is a long, RESEARCHABLE history of winners.  Draw your own conclusions about their taste, but it is worthy of consideration.

Check out this Call to Artists from WorkingArtist.org for the $1000 Artist Grant. $25 entry & an email. It doesn’t get any easier. Don’t miss this one…

CUCUMBER and berries

Between granola and smoothies, I am on a constant hunt for decent fruit.  This time of year, it is a challenge.  The strawberries are horrific, fibrous little lumps. Bananas are great for smoothies but don’t dry well without sulfites.  Cucumbers & pineapples are rocking my smoothies, but FRESH fruit is a struggle. (Yes, I can hear how that sounds.)  Blueberries have saved me lately.  They are relatively cheap and work in cereal and for pancakes & smoothies.  If anyone has recommendations on how to dry them, I’m open to ideas.  This next Call wants your blue solutions…

So why do you consider this online gallery, art publication opportunity?   Well, here are some questions:  Do you need a low risk, low cost way to test new, experimental work? Are you looking to drive traffic to your website and create organic content for social media posts?  And, there’s the grant money.  Do you want the opportunity to be awarded grant money? ha. the PLATE truth

Where are the beautifully plated foods?  I have been home from my residency for 3 days, and I miss my housemates, my studio, the time to focus solely on creation, and honestly, I miss the sauce swirls and flower garnishes on every meal.  So bratty, I know.  Even the goulash was stunning.  Fear not, I’ll publish the Call for that residency another day.  In the meantime, here’s a Call for your best still life work.  Investigate…

THEME:  STILL LIFE “can be a very personal view of an artist’s daily life. . . . The magic of still life imagery is that they [sic] can show us a new way of looking at the ordinary objects around us. Once they are placed into a specific arrangement and then captured in paint, ink, pastel, photography or any other medium – the objects take on a whole new meaning. They are imbued with a life beyond the ordinary. Their existence becomes recorded in time. The objects chosen for a still life painting often have a special meaning, either on a personal, cultural, societal, religious or philosophical level. The themes surrounding the artwork often provoke introspection and reflection in the viewer. The way that the objects are depicted can evoke a wide variety of emotions“. –art-competition.net

pantry PEPPER

What’s the weirdest pantry staple at your house?  It seems like a tiny thing, but my kitchen is rarely without thai chili paste; it has become my go-to source of heat.  Typically it is a combo of red chili pepper, garlic, lemongrass, galangal (ginger), salt, shallot, spices & Kaffer lime.  It is a balanced flavor for me, regardless of the origin of the dish, and it is easier than roasting a pepper from scratch every time I want to add a little heat. I add it to dishes time and time again.  This next Call is one I will probably post time and time again because $9 is a do-able gamble for many of you, and I appreciate the projects they have funded thus far.  See if it is right for you…

THAI tofu

I was out having Thai food for lunch with a friend lately.  I ordered massaman curry with shrimp; she ordered green curry with tofu.  I will never understand.  I said, “Tofu?”, and she replied, “of course, it is my favorite”.  Seriously?  I am certain there are a lot of people who appreciate tofu as a vegetarian-friendly protein that will take on the flavors of other foods.  But she looked me in the face and said, “it is my favorite”.  NO.  It isn’t really anyone’s favorite, is it?  I was looking at the face of deprivation, right?  Someone explain tofu to me.  Again.  Please.
