I’m up to my eyeballs in tomatoes. I’m not a morning person, so I don’t always get to the farmers market early. So, I often have a smaller number of locally-grown options, but this time of year there are always tomatoes — sliced tomatoes, tomato pie, tomato sauce, tomato soup & even sun-dried tomatoes. CALL for PROPOSALS:
Future Framers F.E.A.S.T.

ELIGIBILITY: Open to all artists, thinkers and organizations. You & your collaborators do not have to live in Rockville to submit a proposal.

MEDIA: Open to performances, community events, visual, sonic, tactile, olfactory discoveries, documents, parades, paths, maps, participatory actions, poetic data analysis, interviews, stories, games… No project or medium is incongruous with F.E.A.S.T.

THEME: Future Framers: Envisioning 2040 – Imagine & implement creative actions, events & experiences. Explore alternative economies, architectures, or modes of transportation that might be present in 2040 & beyond. Transform the ordinary into the extra-ordinary. Think long term! Put creative thinking into practice. Give a glimpse of what the future will be or could be. Help envision a sustainable world in the future! Projects that blend the human and non-human environment with projects that will help frame, visualize & shape the future.

DEADLINE: August 1, 2017

NOTIFICATION: September 1, 2017. If you are chosen as a finalist, you must be present in Rockville, MD on September 24th to present your project.

ENTRY FEE: None

JUDGING: F.E.A.S.T. is a public meal designed to use community-driven financial support to democratically fund projects that use art & creative thinking to impact the community. The meal will take place on September 24th. Patrons will give a donation for which they receive a locally-produced & prepared meal & a ballot. Diners listen to & review project proposals & converse with the thinkers behind each idea.

AWARDS: F.E.A.S.T. attendees cast a vote for their favorite proposal, and by the end of the event, the artist who garners the most votes is awarded a grant comprised of the event ticket money.

ARTIST RESIDENCY: 3 Months in Japan

I dislike having food thrown at me. But inevitably every time I go to a Japanese hibachi restaurant, I am the unwilling target of the Chef’s attempt to pop a shrimp into a customer’s mouth. I wonder if the Chefs are like horses… they sense fear. Here’s hoping the result of this Call is a great opportunity to eat authentic Japanese food while not feeling like you’re being used for target practice.

ARTIST RESIDENCY:
3 Months in Japan

The Japan-U.S. Friendship Commission works cooperatively with the National Endowment for the Arts to sponsor The U.S/Japan Creative Artists’ Program. The program provides support for up to five outstanding contemporary and traditional artists from the United States to spend a three-month residency in Japan to pursue their individual artistic goals.

The U.S/Japan Creative Artists’ Program is extremely competitive; applicants should have regional or national recognition and anticipate a highly rigorous review of their work.

Artists should present compelling reasons
for wanting to work in Japan.

ELIGIBILITY: Eligible applicants are architects, choreographers, composers, creative writers, designers, media artists, playwrights, visual artists, or solo theater artists who work with original material (including puppeteers, storytellers and performance artists). Multidisciplinary artists and artistic directors of theater or dance companies are also eligible.

DEADLINE: February 1, 2011

ENTRY FEE: There is no entry fee.

AWARDS: A monthly stipend for living expenses and a housing supplement, as well as an allowance for professional support services. Up to $6,000 for round trip transportation for the artist, domestic partner and/or dependent children, and a baggage/storage allowance. A stipend for pre-departure Japanese language study in the United States.
