Food is so personal.  A client recently asked if I had any dietary restrictions so that she could be prepared for our branding consultation that will span a lunch time.  I’m allergic to parsnips, which is rarely an issue, and wheat which is always an issue.  Always.  Her response?  We grow our own heirloom corn varietals from which we grind our own corn meal for cornbread.”  Food is PERSONAL, and this next Call couldn’t be any more personal.  Your support will determine the growth of this opportunity.  Please make it personal for you too…

Check out this Call for Entries from Art&ArtDeadlines.com for Small Plates: A Response to Hunger, an exhibit of unframed small works at The Balcony Gallery (Knox, TN).  This is a tiny show that needs big support…

ARTIST of the DAY: Sue Hotchkis

beautiful EXISTENCE

I’ve been searching for the perfect new home. I have fallen in love with the most imperfect 10 acres.  Someone else out bid me because my budget is ridiculous.  Two weeks later, their contract dissolved.  I have a second day to hold the hope of imperfection in my heart. Fingers crossed.  Today’s AAAD Artist of the Day, Sue Hotchkis celebrates that same beauty.  My totem art for the day. (continues below)

“…my work is texture and surface, strongly influenced by the Japanese aesthetic of Wabi-Sabi. I seek out imperfection, in the insignificant and the overlooked, using a camera to freeze a moment in time, recording marks and surfaces that are in the process of breaking down, ephemeral, in a state of flux. ” Sue Hotchkis

do i KNOW YOU?

All of us wear a mask.  I don’t believe every mask is a deceit or even a conscious choice, but it still a mask, deceptive or not.  I have days when a wolf in sheep’s clothing seems an overly-dramatic cliche.  Today’s AAAD Artist of the Day, Miguel Vallinas creates the mask that truly fits. CALL for ENTRIES: Karen O’Neil

yours FOREVER

I have spent a lifetime not buying still life work, because it doesn’t usually call to me.  I like my work non-representational, controversial, emotionally raw.  But I keep finding work that defies my notion of what is and is not still life.   Today’s AAAD Artist of the DayKaren O’Neil creates contemporary work with bright hues that only work because of her masterful use of neutrals –grays abound.  (continues below)

ARTIST of the DAY: Don Bergland

utopian DISTOPIA

This site does not debate political issues –except those that surround food.  But let’s speak generally.  The current political circus in the U.S. and abroad seems unreal to me.  I read quotes & sound bites everyday that indicate paint pervasively dark image of humanity.   Today’s AAAD Artist of the Day, Don Bergland stages glimpses of the surreal world –both utopian & dystopian– only previously imagined.  If feel like the perfect fit today. “Fallow Atonement” by AAAD Artist of the Day Don Bergland

“I like to challenge accepted cultural dogma and ideology.  Each of my works features a theatrical set defined by a stage with actors, props, and a backdrop.  The actors in the set consist of everyday objects brought into combinations and interactions that attempt to elicit inquiry.  The content of the artwork focuses on themes such as time, aging, nostalgia, the footless pursuit of Utopia, and the conditions of ideology which disable our rational minds. Each image is constructed using conventions of visual realism, but with alterations that offer dreamlike possibilities. Themes and objects appear and re-appear. Each work becomes a framed snapshot of a moment in theatrical space, noticed briefly, and then forgotten once more, a fraction of time when reality is breached and a frozen glimpse into the mental theatre of Eternity is experienced, an opening when the viewer can catch the faint hint of cotton candy breezing in from the sideshow midway, the pastel moment of a lost memory, a slight reminder that the past is never absent, and that the future is always in front of us.” —Don Bergland

visual POETRY

I appreciate a puzzle. And, I truly appreciate an artist that trusts me to figure it out for myself. Today’s AAAD Artist of the Day, textile artist Tilleke Schwarz leaves gaps allowing the viewer to fill in incomplete narratives and stories, never presuming to spoon feed the entirety of the message.  A gift. Thank you. (continues below)

Daily life, mass media, traditional samplers and cats are major sources of inspiration. The result is a mixture of content, graphic quality and fooling around. The work can be understood as a kind of visual poetry. Every work contains narrative elements. Not really complete stories, with a beginning, a storyline, and an end. On the contrary, the viewer is invited to decipher connections or to create them. ” — Tilleke Schwarz

ARTIST of the DAY: Fenella Elms

deep BREATHS

I met the talented James Dickey, the author of  the book Deliverance, many years ago. As I drove through the rural south today in search of the perfect patch upon which to grow the rest of my life, I felt the feral nature that must have inspired so much of the desperation with which the book reeks.  When my flight instinct kicks in, I need only look up to the trees to see the topmost tiny branches swaying in the biting cold air to find my calm again.  The work of today’s Artist of the Day, Fenella Elms, gives me that same sense of order in the disorder.  Calm in the chaos.

“Aspects of my past career in mental health continue to influence my work with clay: the subconscious approach, a sense of rhythm, attention to detail and difference. I don’t seek to put my experiences into the clay, but marvel at how they emerge.” Fenella Elms

Enjoy the calming forms of Fenella Elms!

ARTIST of the DAY: Ellen Jewett

STRANGE and gentle

As the years go by, I have come to view the details with different eyes.   With people, I have a far greater capacity for empathy even without intimate knowledge of every detail.  But with art, I find myself captivated by the minutia.  I enjoy dissecting the elements.  The sculpture of today’s Artist of the Day, Ellen Jewett, keeps me busy for hours.  A cursory glance may reveal spectacular figurative work, but the individual elements offer tiny narratives to be combined into a more complicated world view.  Mesmerizing. “At first glance my work explores the more modern prosaic concept of nature: a source of serene nostalgia balanced with the more visceral experience of ‘wildness’ as remarkably alien and indifferent.  Upon closer inspection of each ‘creature’ the viewer may discover a frieze on which themes as familiar as domestication and as abrasive as domination fall into sharp relief.”Ellen Jewett

TEA

Did you know that pine needles are edible, sort of?  If you love the smell of holiday wreaths and garlands made of fresh pine, you can get that same sense of comfort from tea brewed of pine needles.  Be careful NOT to use yew, Norfolk Island Pine or Ponderosa Pine (poisonous) and be sure to forage for your needles to help avoid fertilizers and pesticides.  It’s a different way to look at those ever-present evergreens.   This next Call wants to see your different take on plants of all sorts too.  Deck the halls…

CELERY

Even as a kid, my tastes were a little off center.  My father used to chop carrots for me so that I could dip them in celery salt, conveniently contained in the spice container cap.  I don’t recall using celery salt on anything else either.  So strange.  Celery sticks got garlic salt, BTW.  Neither get either now, ha.  This next Call wants your perspective on childhood.  Take a look…
