CALL for ENTRIES: Telling Stories

(& basil)

Herbs and spices always tell a meal’s story.  And those stories are shaped by our experiences. Even though basil is found in Thai cuisine, it immediately transports me to Italy.  And while cumin finds its origins in Iran & the Mediterranean, it conjures memories of Mexico for me. This next Call is looking for your story in images.  This is a great challenge…

Check out this Call for Entries from F-Stop Magazine for Telling Stories, (Issue #74).  I love this theme; plus, there is no entry fee.  So if the cliche is “a picture is worth a 1000 words,” then this is your chance to PROVE it

incident

I spent my childhood as the family cook & server.  I was raised by a single father that couldn’t cook.  I think he realized early on that ANY talent I had in the kitchen would surpass his own.  Even before I could cook with aid of a step stool, I was already setting the table and serving dinner.  I remember serving a plate of spaghetti and tomato sauce to my father, already seated, who quickly discovered you shouldn’t trust a 4 year old to secure a drop leaf table.  Ha.  he called it the “spaghetti incident” until the day he died.  This next Call wants to see how your imagination frames your early memories –food optionalHandle this theme thoughtfully…

HOOPS

I have plastic envy.  Hoop houses are sprouting up all over town as pre-planning for chances of upcoming frost.  Last year our first snow came in October.  Locally lots of folks protect their late Summer plantings from possible early frost while also giving them space to start seedlings in colder weather.  Once the ground is frozen, installation becomes a much more complicated project.  My house hangs on the side of a mountain.  The only flat space I have for a hoop house is my gravel driveway, ha.  Jealous of plastic –never thought I’d have that problem.  This next Call will hopefully make you the object of the jealous.  Take a look…

I am food brave–usually.  I can muster the courage to try bizarre foods, but I’ve gotten pretty squeamish lately.  I am going to just admit this: I am more than mildly addicted to the new TV show iZombie.  I got rid of cable TV in my home in favor of Hulu about 6 months ago, and I thought that would be the end of any regular show watching.  Wrong.  I found iZombie BECAUSE OF Hulu.  But, as you might imagine, zombies eat brains.  Now I realize that they aren’t real human brains, and I realize people indulge in all kinds of brain delicacies” from jello to calves and goat and more.  But, no.  I just can’t.  So apparently I am not open to “anything”, but this next Call IS open to any theme.  Take a look…

for cubs?

In our continuing efforts to downsize in preparation for “tiny living”, I downsized myself out of garden space.  We moved back to our previous 2-acre, mountain-top abode, but anything other than container gardening is impossible with out a major terracing project to provide flat space on the side of the mountain.  So, we’re going to attempt to grow a few squash & cucumbers on the deck using the railings as support.  But, considering the fact that my dog has tree’d several black bears during the past two-weeks.  Am I simply creating a buffet dinner on my porch?  Nature. Hmm.  This next Call wants to know your perspective.  Take a look…

I hear the words, “the food landscape is changing” with ridiculous frequency amongst my foodie friends.  I want to believe it is just that sunny optimism that I seek out in others, not naivete, that makes them spout this feel-good mantra.  I believe in locally-sourced, sustainably-farmed, whole foods.  And given an affordable option, I believe most people would agree.  But, have you seen/heard the commercial wherein MONSANTO says they want you to “be a part of the conversation”?  You know, the company that brought you Agent Orange, PCBs, aspartame, bovine growth hormone.  Be afraid of THAT landscape.  This next Landscape, however, is of a delightful variety–to be LOVED.  Take a look…
