I still get email about my relationship with food. A number of my friends & peers are vegan and are bothered by my cheese obsession. I dare say the majority of the people I know are vegetarian; therefore, any mention of meat ends in a little hate mail from frenemies. And I still regularly get the “why do you write about food” question even though we’ve been at it for almost 10 years now. I am surprised EVERY time. I forget people read what I write, ha. This next Call wants to know about your relationship to anything you care to share. How will you answer this Call?

Is it a challenge for you to get out of bed, because of your relationship with a nagging back? Is driving frustrating to you because____ (fill in the blanks)? My husband has been throwing new bowls for me. (He’s a commercial potter.) I now have bowls of fruit and yarn and onions and paper clips. Because I can’t decide on a glaze color, he keeps throwing while I cannot part with any of them. Now it appears that all things in my house have to be stored in bowls. CURATOR: Yorgos Efthymiadis is an artist from Greece who resides in Somerville, MA. He was a finalist for the 2017 Massachusetts Cultural Council Fellowship and was presented with a 2017 Emerging Artist Award from St. Botolph Club Foundation. He has exhibited in various locations, including Filter Photo Festival, Danforth Art Museum, the Griffin Museum of Photography and the PRC in Boston. Lately, he created a gallery in his own kitchen, titled The Curated Fridge (Crusade for Art Engagement Grant Finalist, Winner of the Popular Vote). The idea behind this project is to celebrate fine art photography and connect photographers around the world. There is a guest curator for every show which run on a quarterly basis, free of charge. Yorgos is represented by Gallery Kayafas in Boston, MA.

It snowed today, in March, in the South, after a couple of weeks of nearly L.A.-like weather. And, of course, I heard lots of grumbling about how produce prices were going to be sky high because of ruined crops. But, truth be told, most folks growing produce this time of year are growing in high tunnels that protect them from minor snow fall and light frost. And some fruit trees like apricots cold exposure amazingly well. This next Call offers exposure that is off benefit, not to be feared. Editor’s Note: I am well-aware of the hackneyed, trite promise of exposure as a payoff for exhibitions that only end up taking an artist’s time & resources offering nothing of real value in return. I don’t like them either. THIS is not one of THOSE as best I can tell. Unlike most billboard calls, there are NO production or participation costs outside of the entry fee. During the winter, I’m grateful for the extra heat of the oven after lunch or dinner. I usually leave the oven door open until it reaches room temp. However, come Summer, or even Spring for that matter, I will start looking for alternative ways to cook without having to combat the heat of the oven for the rest of the day. Ceviche may be the simplest of them all. Ceviche is a method of cooking fish or seafood in citrus juice alone –without heat. It doesn’t produce the flaky fish you get from the oven, but if you’re a fan of sushi, you’ll love ceviche. This next Call is all about Aternative Techniques. I can’t wait to see this exhibit…

I was out having Thai food for lunch with a friend lately. I ordered massaman curry with shrimp; she ordered green curry with tofu. I will never understand. I said, “Tofu?”, and she replied, “of course, it is my favorite”. Seriously? I am certain there are a lot of people who appreciate tofu as a vegetarian-friendly protein that will take on the flavors of other foods. But she looked me in the face and said, “it is my favorite”. NO. It isn’t really anyone’s favorite, is it? I was looking at the face of deprivation, right? Someone explain tofu to me. Again. Please. I am the queen of comfort food. I know that the secret to award-winning mac ‘n’ cheese is Dijon mustard. Before we set out, every restaurant was planned, and the challenge became how to fit in all the additional little eateries and diners that popped up en route. I was reminded, again, that fancy presentation & ingredients don’t make food more filling, more tangible, than the classics. I love vintage books, old photographs, ephemera, boxes, trinkets, weird oddities, games etc. I suppose I’m a nostalgic person, but the timelessness of these objects inspires me to create things myself that have a timeless physicality to them. I enjoy artwork that have visual impactfulness & a certain contextual materiality. I practice this in both my own art making as well as my publishing projects of other artists’ work. For this call for art I’m hoping to present works of photo-based art that truly transcend the notion of the 2-d (or screen) photograph. Aside from his publishing endeavors, Mitchell has also curated & juried exhibitions for a number of galleries and organizations. He has been a juror for Critical Mass & a reviewer for numerous photo festivals across the U.S.. Mitchell teaches workshops as well as presents lectures & panels discussions on hand-crafted photography. Most recently, he was the keynote speaker at the 2016 Northwest Symposium for Alternative Process Photography in Vancouver, BC.
