What are the odds that I could find a reason to mention duck twice in one week? When it rains it pours I suppose. This week has just been a deluge of odd, free or inexpensive and/or unusual calls and opportunities. Well, this little duck of a call is a tasty one…rivaling my own rare Thanksgiving specialty, honey curried duck.
Check out this Call for Submissions from the blog of Duckrabbit Digital. Take advantage of this opportunity to have your photography featured. Their blog seems to be picking up steam, and there is no entry fee. Enjoy!
Duckrabbit Digital is an online-artisan printing company, and they run a well-trafficked blog in conjunction with their printing business. They have started a new weekly series profiling photographers.
They are looking for images that have interesting stories behind them, as well as being strong images in their own right.
(in other words, good photography)
DEADLINE:January 7, 2011
ENTRY FEE:None
ELIGIBILITY:Open to All
If you are interested, e-mail Duckrabbit Digital your small photo (just one please), and tell us the photo’s story. They will notify you shortly if you have been accepted, and set up a date for your work to be showcased.
Money is necessary to buy food… or the seeds to grow food… or to rent the land to grow the plants you pinched from someone else. The point is that money is necessary at some point in the equation As a result, I am known for being particularly sensitive to entry fees and costs associated with putting your art out there. But I ran across one opportunity, I just HAD to share with you.
Remember my little $2 Art Contest? I have been outdone by the $1.50 Art Forum Ad Project. Yep. $1.50. You can’t buy a decent cookie for $1.50, but you can advertise your art…albeit tiny. Check it out…
This project, a conceptual artwork by artist Jeff Thompson, allows for 4,200 artists to have their work seen in Artforum magazine.
Each participant, paying $1.50 USD and sending their image electronically, will then have their piece, along with all the other participating artists, in an advertisement. Of course, due to the number of artists needed to raise the money for this venture, the images themselves will be quite small… about 3/16″ x 3/16″. (think pencil eraser size, but square.)
FEES: You make a payment of $1.50 using PayPal and send an image of your work. The image is shrunk to the 3/16″. When $4,200 is raised, the ad is sent to Artforum to be published.
The final advertisement and all participating artists will be listed on a revised version of www.artforumadproject.com after publication.
SUBMISSIONS: You can submit payment via PayPal to artforum@jeffreythompson.org, then send your image via email. Please send images sized no larger than 5″ x 7″, 300 dpi. Be sure to include your PayPal confirmation number with your image.
*Editor’s Note: This IS NOT endorsed by Artforum Magazine. And no, I cannot guarantee this is not a scam. Lots of these projects exist. But, I would also like to remind you that you have wasted $1.50 before…I guarantee it. So, if you’re feeling adventurous and don’t have the time or money for skydiving…take a chance.
After my post referencing Chef Cat Cora and the inequality of kitchen roles between the sexes, I received an amusing amount of email about “hunters” versus “gatherers.” I am still writing an art blog, right? Too funny. Can you even imagine what would happen if I, in my 4″ heels, had to gather my food from somewhere other than the grocery store?I can hear you laughing. Why are we talking about hunting and gathering? Well this next Call came to my attention, and I couldn’t resist.
Check out this Call for Submissions from Hunter and Cook, a Canadian-produced contemporary art magazine. You know how I love art publicaton and am constantly preaching its merits. I am privileged to know a large number of artists that are multi-talented writers, singers, songwriters, musicians, performing artists, visual artists…and foodies. That’s a talent, too, folks. Being a foodie requires educating your palate to accept snails as food and taking the time to learn the subtleties of ingredients. But never fear, this Call for Entries from Michigan Technological University doesn’t require use of your tongue…just your creativity and talent for prose, poetry and/or art.
Check out this great Call for Submissions from Blue Ice Magazine, an online literary journal affiliated with Michigan Technological University’s Humanities Department. There is no fee, no payment and no deadline. No, I am not joking. There are also no acceptable excuses.
Blue Ice, an online literary journal affiliated with Michigan Technological University’s Humanities Department, is accepting submissions of poetry, prose, and art. They claim, “We publish any type of writing and art, as long as it’s good.”
What could be simpler?
Blue Ice is a nonprofit online student literary magazine located in Michigan Tech’s Department of Humanities and a project of the Literary Arts Club (check out their Facebook page).
MEDIA: Poetry, prose, photography, and “art collages made out of multi-colored toenails, etc.” They’re funny too. Cool.
DEADLINE: None.
NOTIFICATION:
Allow an enormous amount of time for a response – there is no deadline, after all, and you will not be erased from their website.
PAYMENT:
None…but “your name and work will show up in a Google search.”
SUBMISSIONS:
All submission must be original and previously unpublished.Be nice. If you have submitted your work elsewhere, let Blue Ice know. If it gets published elsewhere, let Blue Ice know. And if Blue Ice publishes it first, let the other(s) know.
Send your submission via e-mail attachment to blueice@mtu.edu. In the subject line, write “Submission.” Tell them a little bit about yourself in the body of the e-mail.
For visual art, attach submission as a high res image file.
Is it wrong that I enjoy the idea of torturing my readers…just a little? I know some of you that subscribe by email enjoy getting your morning dose of art deadlines combined with ridiculous food references…and a non-solicited lecture or two. Lecture of the day…art publication. I don’t have the energy to say more. Search “art publication” in the box to the right if you are unfamiliar with my rantings on the subject. Having shortened my lecture, I am only going to indulge in eggs-benedict guilt…not molten-chocolate-lava-cake guilt…if that’s okay with you.

Someone emailed me an appreciative note about my recent post featuring arubber chicken. I explained that finding Calls for Entry day after day was far easier than figuring out how to make a food reference day after day. There have only been a few that I wasn’t particulary proud of like the Rice A Roni reference to San Francisco. Nothing against Rice A Roni…it just wasn’t a creative reference. So here I am…horses? Carrot, folks. That’s all I’ve got.

I have always wondered why I have never received a “____ of the Month” gift for a holiday. Fruit, cheese, beer…you name it, I would love any of them. Maybe my relatives are concerned about my food obsession? It’s possible. But not only do I love most things edible, I have a soft spot for mail. I may be the only human alive that still has magazine subscriptions…plural. You can feel this one coming, can’t you?Mmmhmm…art publication.

Editor’s Note:I know, I know. I can smell the paranoid, suspicious email headed my way about how I shouldn’t promote Calls from newbies. Bottom line…we all start somewhere. They are building a blog and finding a few fans on facebook too.
This blog is only a year old. If everyone had been suspicious, I wouldn’t have a few hundred of you mixed nuts reading these posts everyday. Then where would we all be (she says with an exaggerated sense of self-importance)? Have a little faith, folks. When you expect the best…you very often get it.
My family enjoys joking… that if I continue moving to towns with smaller and smaller populations that I will eventally live in complete isolation except, of course, for my husband, internet access, food delivery, my dogs and a separate home for my shoe collection. Funny, eh?There is something to be said for both urban AND country living. I love them both, but buying fresh eggs and goat milk from a farm on my way home has skewed my objectivity just a smidge.
I cannot wait to see the results of the Call for Entries for The Urban and Country Landscape Annual Book from The Worldwide Photography Gala Awards. It is a type of art publication–which you know I love, and part published exhibit. There is no entry fee unless you are accepted. Take advantage of this great opportunity to both tell your story and show your work.

The theme is ample and everything will depend on your interpretation, knowing that we will like to screen landscapes and cityscapes with or without people in the scene. People can be predominant in the scene.

I suspect you’ll judge me, but I have to admit that there are more than a few classic cartoons that are a part of my every day life. I realize that I am dating myself, but on this Labor Day weekend…I have no doubt that Boo Boo would love to steal my pic-a-nic basket when I am at Bays Mountain Park. Umhmmm…
