the APPLE of my eye
It is almost apple season ’round these parts, and I cannot wait. I grew up thinking Red Delicious apples were “apples”, and I wasn’t a fan. Not until I became a teenager did I understand there were many other varieties. Not until I moved to Tennessee did I realize how many varieties there really were. Now, I live within a few miles of an orchard with more varieties than I imagine I’ll never get around to trying. I appreciate being able to know about my food, about how it is grown and harvested and sold, and how those funds support the lives of my neighbors.
That connection to my food is what made me connect to this exhibit about agricultural awareness. I know that many of you are hoping to add a museum show to your resume, and this is a great opportunity to do just that. Your work doesn’t have to be literal or necessarily botanical to fit this curatorial them. Show them what you’ve got.

Art About Agriculture

ELIGIBILITY: Open to all artists 18+
MEDIA: Open to all media
THEME: Agriculture “art that in some way draws its inspiration from our agricultural heritage and/or contemporary agriculture. That inspiration may include (but is not limited to) depictions of rural landscape, farm animals, farm products, and rural life. Art that in a more abstract way deals with issues and ideas related to agriculture will also be considered.”
DEADLINE: September 27, 2019
NOTIFICATION: October 4, 2019
ENTRY FEE: $30 up to 3
JUROR: Works for this exhibition will be selected by a panel of the Ag Art Alliance’s curatorial staff. “The purpose of the exhibit is to promote awareness of agriculture by using art to explore its many facets – from workers to water, machinery to fields, and to the food that goes on our plates.”
AWARD: $500 in prizes will be awarded.
SALES: The Santa Paula Art Museum & Ag Art Alliance will receive 40% commission on all sales.
