CALL for SUBMISSIONS: 2019 Annmarie AiR

Learn more about the 2019 Summer Residency from Annmarie Sculpture Garden and Arts Center!

for the love of DAIRY

I did NOT eat haggis in Scotland while in residency.  No one offered it to me.  It wasn’t on any menu that I saw.  No one suggested that I should make or order it –except every person I know in the United States, ha. I did, however, give in to hot tea, drink liter after liter of unhomoginized, “gently pasteurized” local milk and ate a shameful number of all-butter Scottish shortbread biscuits.  I ate boatloads of Dutch gouda and an embarrassing amount of brie from the local cheese shop.  And the spinach quiche and sun-dried tomato bread from the local bakery was sinful.  You do Scotland your way, I did it mine.  The biggest news is how I approached my work differently…

I went to another continent, worked 80+ hours a week and came home with three small pieces of completed work.  I spent 8 solid hours of work on an area the size of a silver dollar.   I could NEVER do that at my home studio uninterrupted.  I spent thirty hours over 3 days working & re-working a 2″ x 4″ section of stitching. I could NEVER do that at my home studio without massive frustration.  Residency is the hardest thing to do.  It is undistracted, unobstructed time to experiment and succeed and fail without excuse (that’s the hard part).  Residency time is priceless.  THIS residency is a working residency that requires working with the public on a project.  If it lights you up, if you can envision the project and can’t wait to get started, please don’t miss this chance.  Don’t let doubt or all the things you think you need to be get in the way.  Just submit the project.  Don’t worry about what happens if they say “yes” or if they say “no”.  Take the chance because it could change the course of how you work and of how you approach your work forever.

Check out this Call for Submissions from Annmarie Sculpture Garden & Arts Center (Solomons, MD) for 2019 Summer Residency. There is no entry fee, plus there is a stipend, project funding, housing and more.  This is one of those rare opportunities.  Please investigate to see if it is the right fit for you…

“The summer residency program provides a serene place on the Western Shore of the Chesapeake Bay for visual, musical, and literary artists to design and produce a community arts project. Most artists run their project through Annmarie’s creative reuse center, called the artLAB, where artists are encouraged to incorporate recycled or repurposed materials into their project. Residencies are meant to focus on community arts projects; those that merge arts and the environment are particularly desirable. ” –from annmariegarden.org

CRAVING connections

We had three days of Spring-like weather, but Monday was 15° colder than Sunday.  Tuesday is predicted to be 21° colder than Monday was. So that means SOUP, predictable, I know.  While prepping lunch today I was day dreaming about making my favorite Tom Ka Gai when my eyes scanned a row of go-to cookbooks I keep above my stove.  What did I find?  The Soupmaker’s Kitchen (not an affiliate link, BTW) by Aliza Green.  I don’t know how it ended up in my house, much less on the shelf with my favorites.  No one in my house remembers buying it or ever seeing it.  Bizarre, no?  It contains great advice on stock-making and other best kitchen practices along with some fantastic recipes, and Steve Legato’s photography makes everything look luscious.  I cannot wait to make the Hungarian Woodlands Mushroom soup & the Senegalese Peanut and Yam Puree with Ginger.  Yum.

While eating lunch, I happened to read this next Call from Annmarie Arts Center.  I’ve written about them many times over the years because I am SUCH a fan of this venue.  I applied today.  This is a “living studio” experience.  They split the gallery into 12’x12′ studio spaces for artists for 5 to 14 days, and you work in an open environment with other artists & gallery visitors.  They encourage sales, and the commission rate is super low.  This is a sort of make your own residency for out of town folks, and more like an production art show for locals.  There is some housing available for out-of-towners.  I want to use the two weeks to test out some new content and techniques before I head off to Scotland for a month.  I hope I make the cut.  If you have time & the interest, we may get an opportunity to hang out for a couple of weeks & work together. So exciting.  Fingers crossed –for you AND for me.

Check out this Call for Entries from Annmarie Sculpture Garden & Arts Center (Solomons, MD) for Artists in Action. $20 entry & 20% commission.  What would you do with two weeks of nearly uninterrupted creative time? The deadline is just a day or two away.  Here’s your chance…

I officially have cabin fever.  I hate sand, so when I start fantasizing about island retreats and tropical drinks, you know winter has gone on too long. The low temp was 14°F at my house last night; my Seattle friends think I’m a wimp.  They can think what they want.  I will be sipping from an umbrella-topped glass, if only in my head.  This next Call is my current co-conspirator.  Escape with me…

Bugs, both lady & stink, invade my house every winter.  I can only assume their numbers increase wildly due to the need to seek warmth.  The ladybugs that everyone adores are different that the erratic, mean-spirited beetle variety that haunts the windows & lampshades in my home.  And the stinkbugs, oh my.  Did you know that National Geographic wrote an article a few years ago suggesting that these odoriferous creatures add an apple flavor to sauces?  Thanks, but no. I want to smack every pert, ponytail-wearing, 20-something that looks at me with pity when they see 2 lbs. of butter in my shopping cart.  I can read their calorie-counting little minds, “Fat makes you fat; no wonder you’ve got a case of the pudgies.”  Really?  Does anyone really still believe the myth that fat makes you fat?  My pudge is due to eating more than I move. End of story.  I’ll take my butter over your chemical-laden margarine any day, Ms. Ponytail.  Explore your own myths with this next Call.  Bring on the butter…

This exhibit celebrates works of art that bring to life fantastical myths, legends, fables, folktales, fairy tales, and the like. Around the world, from prehistoric times to the present, artists have been part of the story-telling process, giving shape and form to fantastical stories of supernatural beings, great heroes and heroines, cautionary tales, magical creatures, and more. In ancient times, artists commonly rendered images of these stories on walls, pottery, statuary, tapestries, and paintings. In more recent times, books, graphic novels, movies, apps, and games have expanded the way we experience these stories. No matter the time period, the artist becomes the story-teller and shares their spectacular vision through their art.

I am consistently amused by product names.  It comes from all the years of marketing.  When I saw the first commercial for belVita, I thought, “Really? Those sound awful.”  But, of course, I am now addicted to the Golden Oat variety.  However, I think I have to draw the line at urine-monikered soft drinks.  Funny? Yes.  Appetizing? No.  This next Call’s humor makes it a yummy opportunity.  Take a look…

I used to be addicted to “snack size,” pre-portioned foods.  I thought they were the perfect solution to my portioning problem.  However, I learned that the innocent little packages led me to eating multiples.  Plus, the extra packaging and cost don’t sit well either.  So, I’m back to counting cheese puffs and Fritos® again.  Let’s hope the small size of the artwork for the next Call creates a feed frenzy too.  Check it out…

Genetically modified food scares the crap out of me. I understand, economically speaking, why food is modified.   But it doesn’t matter how much disease-resistant, mutant corn you can produce if everyone has three heads and glows in the dark.  Am I suggest that genetically-modified corn causes these symptoms? No.  I am suggesting that none of us know WHAT the end result could be.  I’m planting heirloom varieties in my patch in the back yard this year.  This Call certainly encourages you to beauty and vulnerability of the endangered and the threatened. We’ve all been told not to play with our food.  And, none of us really understood why parents made this blanket statement.  As an adult, I still don’t understand why.  If my kid wants to play with his food then have to eat it while it is cold… well, those are his lumps in his potatoes, not mine.  Apparently, I’m not alone in valuing the play-value of food.  Take a look at a great book called Food Play by Joost Elffers and Saxton Freymann (not paid sponsors, I assure you).  This next Call certainly encourages you to play, but not necessarily with your food.  Investigate for yourself…

Learn more about the Toys show at the Annmarie Sculpture Garden! This exhibit seeks works of art that use toys and children’s playthings as the inspiration, subject matter, and/or medium with the goal of creating playful, amusing, nostalgic, or poignant commentaries on the role of toys in our lives. Many of us hold fond memories of special toys that yielded hours of entertainment and can vividly remember when a treasured toy was lost, broken, stolen, or otherwise retired.

For these reasons and more, toys can be a powerful art medium, conjuring up both treasured and difficult memories of childhood, past friendships, and other recollections. From the utterly outrageous to the sappy and sentimental, this exhibit will include all media, small to large scale. The exhibit will be installed in the Main Gallery of the Arts Building, but a small number of outdoor works will be considered for the Sculpture Garden.  The jury seeks works that are engaging, and fun, and above all, playful!
