Learn more about the Dreams 3 exhibit from G25N and Art-competition net!EATING in my sleep

I have been having the oddest dreams.  I think it is related to the new version of melatonin supplements I am taking before bed.  As you might know, my dreams are often about food.  The most commonly reoccurring dream involves my being chased by Swiss chard –specifically red shard wearing yellow sneakers.  Yes, I know it is weird.  No, I don’t have an explanation.  This next Call is all about dreams and you don’t have to explain them either.  Interpretation is wide open…

Reflections upon our dreams can have a fleeting effect or a significance that may haunt us for a lifetime. The visual artist can offer safe refuge to the viewer, a connection to these dreams at our invitation as we appreciate the creative avenues we discover through their art. The artist has this opportunity to present a dream as a hazy filtered reality from representational memories to an explosion of abstract & surrealistic imagery—all of which may be emotionally treasured as his or her own.” –art-competition.net

Over the years, I have fallen for all foods Chicago style.  From deep-dish pizza to hot dogs to open face horseshoes with fries piled high, the windy city knows its food.  But just like my state is more than Memphis BBQ or Nashville Hot, Illinois is more than the famous foods of Chicago.  Did you know that Illinois is one of the few states that has adopted an official snack food –popcorn.  Their unique spin is equal parts cheese & caramel-flavored varieties, a state after my own heart.  This next Call is from that very state, and the commission is so low…

CALL for ENTRIES: Shades of Green

Learn more about the Shades of Green exhibit from Art-competition.net and G25N!BROCCOLETTI di rapa

I have a secret love for rapini.  You may know it as broccoli raab or broccoletti.  People assume it is just fancy broccoli and often cook it that way, hence the reason I hide my love of it (until now).  Rapini is more closely related to a turnip than broccoli with the same tendency toward bitterness or stringy-ness if under cooked or overcooked.  Don’t ever buy, cook or serve rapini that isn’t a gorgeous shade of green.  (You won’t enjoy the yellow, trust me.)  Don’t under cook it or spare the garlic & olive oil.  This next Call wants your perspective on all the shades of green, not just the broccoli shades.  An open theme…

My earliest food influences came from my grandmother & her sister Maggie.  They had such different styles.  My grandmother was all about a meat, two veggies, some form of potato, bread & dessert.  Every meal.  My great aunt Mag was all about the drama.  Her corn-on-the-cob was the best.  Her deviled eggs were the best.  Her pancakes were the best.  But everything else, apart from the star of the meal, was an after thought.  I find myself gravitating toward concentrating on one dish and forgetting the rest.  All the glory, none of the mundane.
