I was out having Thai food for lunch with a friend lately. I ordered massaman curry with shrimp; she ordered green curry with tofu. I will never understand. I said, “Tofu?”, and she replied, “of course, it is my favorite”. Seriously? I am certain there are a lot of people who appreciate tofu as a vegetarian-friendly protein that will take on the flavors of other foods. But she looked me in the face and said, “it is my favorite”. NO. It isn’t really anyone’s favorite, is it? I was looking at the face of deprivation, right? Someone explain tofu to me. Again. Please. Eating local is a tiny act that can have a huge impact. It isn’t a possibility for everyone, but I advocate eating local-ish. Chose the food that came from the place closest to you. Sometimes that is all you can do. Your taste buds will thank you, and it does reduce the emissions of the transport to your table. Right now, I can still get cherry tomatoes from not too far away, and I am eating them on everything. This next Call wants to you to explore tiny acts of rebellion. This is a great curatorial theme.

Tiny Acts Topple Empires

ELIGIBILITY: Open to any practicing artist creating work in the United States, with the exception of those currently enrolled in an undergraduate degree-granting program, is eligible to submit.

MEDIA: All media considered. The gallery is best-suited to displaying 2-D work, but can consider smaller and/or wall-mounted sculptural work & video. No size restrictions, but please note that wall height from ceiling to baseboard is 100”.

THEME: Rebellion. Bhandari invites artists to consider the manifold expressions of rebellion, and how they might be manifested in contemporary art. The exhibition takes its title from a quote in a 2004 essay by Danusha Goska, in which she writes, “when we study the biographies of our heroes, we learn that they spent years in preparation, doing tiny, decent things before one historical moment propelled them to center stage and used them to tilt empires.” The curator will consider work that engages with all types of rebellion: formal, material, political, and otherwise. Artworks engaging with notions of rupture, disruption, and change are sought.

CURATOR: Heather Darcy Bhandari is a New York City-based curator, writer, and arts advocate. Her book Art/Work, written with Jonathan Melber, will be published in its second edition by Free Press this month. Bhandari was a Director at Mixed Greens gallery in New York City from 2000 to 2016 before becoming Director of Exhibitions at Smack Mellon in Brooklyn, New York. Bhandari is currently developing independent curatorial projects, teaches at Brown University, and serves on the board of directors of visual art at Omi International Art Center.

I spent part of this weekend in a Virginia State Park. Every year the park lights their train tunnel and serves hot chocolate & s’mores while musicians echo familiar carols in the background. As the temperature dropped to the mid-thirties, I made my way to concessions & was handed a steaming paper cup with a plastic spoon to stir my powdered mix. After my first sugary sip, I was transported to my childhood, as if by time machine, complete with melted marshmallow mustache. AWARDS: Bernheim will provide comfortable housing in a beautiful wooded setting and an honorarium up to $2,500.00 USD**. This honorarium is to help offset travel expenses for artists visiting from afar. (Regional Artist in Residence can expect to receive a minimum of $1000 honorarium. Recipients of a Bernheim Regional artists include those currently living in Kentucky, Southern Indiana and the greater vicinities of Cincinnati, OH and Nashville, TN.) In exchange, artists will create a site-specific sculpture or project or exhibition, with least one mutually agreed upon work of art left to the Bernheim Foundation. There is also some form of public engagement required such as a lecture, workshop, demonstration or participation in one of ’s annual events.

Recipients are required to live and work at Bernheim for a minimum of four weeks to three months. Bernheim will provide comfortable housing in a one-room cabin with kitchen, AC, heating, Wi-Fi and a log-burning fireplace accessible from outside the arboretum. There is a lakeside studio that is heated, with electricity, concrete floors, a utility sink, and a large, well-lit wall. *Editor’s Note: Of the amazing amenities Bernheim offers, one of them is an Edible Garden that provides food served daily in their cafe, another being wild edibles classes. Just FYI.
