We’ve been told to err is human (by Alexander Pope) but I believe to eat is divine.  Eating is a life experience that we all share regardless of our culture.  Although, culture certainly plays a big part in our culinary experience.  My child snickered like Beavis and Butthead when I called his sausage and potato dinner bangers and mash.  This call is a chance for you to share your own cultural viewpoint.

I am dreaming of summer, and it is barely February.  I am longing for fresh produce, watermelons and picnics.  I have had enough of hot house fruits and vegetables that cost enough you could assume they must be gold-plated.  This next call has a summer deadline, but don’t procrastinate.

Dena Beard is Curatorial Assistant at the Berkeley Art Museum and Pacific Film Archive (BAM/PFA). For the MATRIX program at BAM/PFA she assists with the production of site-specific projects by national and international emerging artists.

Independently, she curated the Lending Library exhibition series in Oakland and San Francisco.  Dena is currently working on Take Up Room on the Floor, a project about physical and virtual embodiment, and a solo exhibition featuring the artist Lutz Bacher. Prior to joining the staff at BAM/PFA, Dena was Curatorial Associate at the Santa Barbara Contemporary Arts Forum.  She graduated from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago with an M.A. in Art History, Theory, and Criticism.

AWARDS:  Cash awards to be determined.

ABOUT THE GALLERY:  Axis Gallery is an artist-run space.  This cooperative has been together for over 15 years building a reputation for exhibiting challenging contemporary artwork.  The artist members are equal partners and support the gallery through sales of artwork, contribution of labor and monthly dues, thus avoiding the usual constraints of a commercial gallery.

I love earthy foods.  Give me grassy asparagus and a loamy merlot, and I’m a happy girl.  However, just because something is earthy or natural doesn’t mean I want to eat it.  I will pass on the lemongrass and tofu, but you can toss a little wheat germ in my pancakes, though.  This Call will give you a chance to get up close and personal with nature…from the mundane to the outlandish.

The Gallery is dedicated to providing the public with opportunities to learn about visual arts through public programs that are varied, accessible, challenging, and educational. Its mission is to provide exhibitions and other programs that both reflect and engage the diverse audiences of the entire Contra Costa region.

This national juried exhibition will look at landscape from all vantage points and all media, including painting, sculpture, photography, video, and mixed media. From the micro to the macro, artists can explore a tiny speck of a garden to a global view.

ELIGIBILITY:  Open to all artists in the United States, 18 years of age or older. Entries must be original work completed within the last three years.

SUSHI ME!

When you think of North Carolina, what food comes to mind?  I instantly think vinegar-based barbeque; however, this blog has been awash with pit-smoked references lately.  So, I turned to my friend Michelle, a fellow blogger and Foreign Service officer for a little help.  She is getting her doctorate from UNC.  She says the best sushi place ever is a little place called Akai Hana and just happens to be outside of Chapel Hill in Carrboro, NC.  This next Call might end in a great sushi dinner if you play your cards right.

The Chapel Hill Public Arts Office invites artists to apply for the 2011 – 2012 Juried Exhibitions Series. Original two- and three-dimensional artwork by selected artists will be displayed in Chapel Hill Town Hall and possibly other Town cultural facilities beginning May 2011.

Selected artists will be invited to exhibit their work in small group shows of two or three artists for two-month exhibition periods. The Juried Exhibitions Series is promoted in the local media and through Public Arts Office announcements and press releases. Selected artists will be asked to provide specific information and deliver their work for installation at agreed upon times. Public Arts staff and contractors install the work for exhibition.

ELIGIBILITY:   Open to all artists creating original artwork that can be hung indoors or displayed in glass cases.

Each portfolio must include:  Ten (10) Images of Relevant Work – Each image must be a PC-compatible JPEG file at 72 pixels per inch, as close to but no larger than either of the following dimensions: 750 pixels wide by 560 pixels tall. Each JPEG file must be named in the following format – lastname_01_title.jpg – where the artist’s last name is followed by underscore, two-digit identification number, underscore, title, file extension. If you wish to show a detail, include it within the required number of images. Please do not present your work as a montage of images (ie, in a PowerPoint file); each image must be a separate JPEG. Images submitted should be representative of the type of work proposed for exhibition.

I would like to tell you that once a year I participate in some sort of thorough Spring cleaning, Winter spruce up, etc.  But as recently as Monday I admitted that housekeeping in not my strong suit.  I do, however, love annual traditions like Ribfest, Wingfest and the Chili Cook-off.  Here’s another annual event that can add to your resume instead of adding to your waist line.

Cioffoletti also reviews theater as a freelance writer for New York Moves Magazine and is on the Board of Castle Gallery at The College of New Rochelle and Westchester Arc’s Gallery 265. Previously she has worked for the Rubin Museum, Pelham Art Center, Castle Gallery at The College of New Rochelle, and the Museum of Modern Art.

When is the last time you went to a cooking demonstration?  I love the sort of public bravado that comes with a demonstration meant to sell pots ‘n’ pans or cutlery.  And infomercials are just the best.  If I didn’t have a day job, I would be broke from all the gadgets I could buy like sandwich makers, dehydrators, juicers, blenders, choppers and baking pans.  I am in love with the NyFork (left). This next Call gives you a public outlet to display your work with the need for fancy knife skills or clever alliteration.

ENTRY FEE:  The entry fee for 1 to 3 works is $35; one entry per artist.  A diptych or triptych is considered a single work.

Other awards and fellowships include the Anna Giles Kimber Travel Grant from the Dallas Museum of Art, NEA, and the Core Program 1983-85 at The Glassell School of Art. His collections are included in The Museum of Fine Arts Houston, Dallas Museum of Art, Walker Art Center and Museo Culterdad, Mexico City. He was juror for Art on the Avenue (2003) and juror with Arielle Masson and Sandy Zilker (2004). Brian was featured in Catherine D. Anspon’s book “Texas Art Today” in 2010. He is represented by Meredith Long & Co., Houston, Tx.

I love root vegetables.  Carrots and turnips are yummy, but I simply have never developed a taste for beets.  I don’t hate beets.  I just don’t eat them.  But I must admit I’ve been tempted.  My mother grew up in the hills of Tennessee, and when she was little, her mother used to boil beets in a kettle over an open fire outside in the yard. 

The little devils that they were, my mother and her siblings used to grab them by the greens out of the pot and squeeeeeeeze.  Apparently they shoot out like little red rockets out of their skins.  Beet rockets, funny.  Get to the source of your imagination with this Call.

FISH for THOUGHT

I love a good project.  Sometimes to get myself out a artistic funk, I need a small-scale, end-in-sight, easily-finishable project to get my juices flowing again.  The holiday food fest has put my food palate into a funk, and I’m hoping grilled lemon tilapia will solve that problem.  Maybe yesterday’s Shooz call and this next call will be the solution to the artistic funk.

Learn more about the Los Angeles Brain Bee!The Los Angeles Brain Bee invites artists from all areas of study to enter the Neuroscience Art contest. Artists are asked to submit their work on the theme: Neuroscience and Magic.  This theme is in honor of guest speakers Stephen Macknik and Susana Martinez-Conde who recently published the book Sleights of Mind: What the Neuroscience of Magic Reveals about our Everyday Deceptions.

Artists are encouraged to express their creativity to represent the relationship between the brain and magic.  Artists are encouraged to collaborate with individuals knowledgeable in neuroscience for factual detail and analysis, however their own interpretation of Magic and the Brain is acceptable without scientific validity. The objective is to highlight how deceptions of magic can parallel deception in our daily lives.

ELIGIBILITY:  All ages are able to enter.  Artists of all nationalities may enter.  Group entries are allowed but a single member should be nominated as the leader and their name will be used as the name of the Group.  Works presented need not be newly created.  The work may be a project consisting of multiple images or elements.

Have you ever been rejected from an art competition? Village Gallery is turning rejection into acceptance.  This exhibition is an all-hung, “first come first serve”, so please reserve your place as soon as possible.  Capacity of the gallery is 50 to 60 artworks.

The gallery’s mission is to assist clients with the intricacies of acquiring works of art.  The gallery specializes in contemporary arts by established and emerging artists.  The gallery consigns contemporary artists who work in a variety of media including painting, drawing, photography, printmaking, and mixed media.  In addition, Village Gallery sponsors its own non-profit organization, “Beyond The Eye”.  Ten percent of every work sold will be donated to “Beyond The Eye.”  Each year, the organization donates the money to individuals or other non-profit organizations based on their needs.

Frank Hardy is a self – taught artist. Mr. Hardy established the Selma Youth Development Center in July 1989. His vision included using the arts to help in the development of youth and give them alternatives to violence and other ‘street’ related activities. He established 3 major art programs at the youth center: Dance, Visual Art and Music. These art programs, along with amateur boxing, tutoring and computer skills, are offered after school hours and during the summer months to youth in Selma and the surrounding area. Frank currently serves as the executive director of the youth center. One of Frank’s visions includes bridging the gaps between cultures while preserving culture through the arts.

Learn more about Chintia Kirana online!ABOUT THE CURATOR:  Chintia Kirana provided a fresh perspective to the Mongomery area art community.  She graduated from Auburn University in Montgomery with a B.A. in Painting (with honors).  She is the founder and excecutive director of a non-profit art organization called EYA (Emerging Young Artists)

EYA’s mission is to promote emerging artists, while at the same time strengthen the relationship between communities and their artists; by providing free workshops, benefit shows, and volunteered community projects.  Kirana’s work has been exhibited nationally and internationally.

I think nesting is common to the winter months and holidays.  For some of my more responsible friends and peers, nesting means cleaning, organizing and decorating.  My version of nesting?  Mismatched pajamas, a quilt we call “the sleepy maker” and sappy, corny or tear-jerker Saturday movies (think Lifetime and Hallmark) …popcorn & chocolate & pizza, oh my.  This Call lets you explore the concept of the Nest.

Nest is an all-media juried exhibition sponsored by The Torpedo Factory Art Center that examines the nest as a symbol for home and refuge.  Artists are asked to respond to the theme of nests and how they view this symbol, literally or conceptually. 

ELIGIBILITY:  Open to all artists and all media.

DEADLINE:  February 11, 2011

NOTIFICATION:  March 2, 2011

ENTRY FEE:  A non-refundable fee of $35.00 must accompany each entry form, and a $10.00 fee for each additional art work submitted.  Checks are to be made payable to the Torpedo Factory Artists’ Association (TFAA) or via Paypal*, targetgallery@torpedofactory.org. *A $1.50 fee applies if you pay by Paypal.

JUROR:  The juror for this exhibition is Gretchen Schermerhorn, Artistic Director for the Pyramid Atlantic Arts Center in Silver Spring, Maryland.  Thematically, her work often explores the relationships between humans, science, politics and psychology.  Her works have been exhibited nationally and internationally in such places as Northern Ireland, New York, Boston and Washington DC.  Her work is in public and permanent collections including the Janet Turner Print Collection and Amity Art Foundation.

SALES:  A commission of 40% will be taken on all works sold as a result of this exhibition.  Payment will be mailed to the artist within 30 days of the exhibition closing.
