I am simply over the moon when I my 12-year-old son can be convinced to eat something new…anything new, really.  I’m not asking him to eat live sea urchins, sheep brains or anything bizarre.  I just insist that he TRIES everything a few times.  His recent consumption (and enjoyment) of black olives on pizza almost made me pass out.  I am still can’t believe his chicken-fingers-and-fries palate enjoyed them. This next Call is from a theatre company that has ventured into new territory–visual arts.  I simply love this concept…

Check out this Call for Entries for the Adventure Exhibit at the Connelly Theatre in New York City, brought to you by the Pipeline Theatre Company.  This may be the simplest FREE Call for a New York show you may ever find.  Don’t miss this opportunity…

CALL for ENTRIES: Yosemite Renaissance

ANYONE?

Does your family eat green or eco-friendly? My family has made progress toward going the eco-friendly green route in baby steps over the past few years both in our culinary exploits and energy consumption. However, I’ll admit that it rarely occurs to me to use my art to contribute to environmental awareness.  I will do a lot of things to save the environment, just don’t ask me to drink the juice, ugh. This next call gives you the opportunity to use art to help protect Yosemite…

Check out the Call for Entries for the 27th Annual Yosemite Renaissance Exhibit. You can enter one piece for as little as $15 and help protect Yosemite National Park in new generations with your unique interpretation. It’s good to be green…

Yosemite Renaissance is an annual competition and exhibition which is intended to encourage diverse artistic interpretations of Yosemite.

Its goals are to bring together the works of serious contemporary artists that do not simply duplicate traditional representations; to establish a continuum with past generations of Yosemite artists; and to help re-establish visual art as a major interpretive medium of the landscape and a stimulus to the protection of the environment.

Yosemite El Capitan by Mike Murphy in 2005Historically, the arts have played a very important role in the establishment of our State and National Parks. It is the hope of Yosemite Renaissance that they can be just as important in future efforts to preserve and protect that heritage.

on chocolate

It has been suggested that I seek professional help for my food obsession.  However, like any well-seasoned food addict, I prefer to think of myself as food-educated or food-curious, not just food-obsessed.  I’m certain a psychoanalyst could figuratively feast on my many stufffed, food-related issues.  Where’s the couch? (Speaking of couches, check out the cake couch entitled “You Can’t Have Your Cake and Eat It Too”, the chocolate couch was created by Argentinian artist Leandro Erlich for an art-exhibit appropriately named “Let Them Eat Art”.) Maybe this next call would give me some insight.  Never miss an opportunity to self-analyze, ha…

TEMPTED?

We’ve all been told not to play with our food.  And, none of us really understood why parents made this blanket statement.  As an adult, I still don’t understand why.  If my kid wants to play with his food then have to eat it while it is cold… well, those are his lumps in his potatoes, not mine.  Apparently, I’m not alone in valuing the play-value of food.  Take a look at a great book called Food Play by Joost Elffers and Saxton Freymann (not paid sponsors, I assure you).  This next Call certainly encourages you to play, but not necessarily with your food.  Investigate for yourself…

TOYS, Re-Invent, Re-Imagine, Re-Discover

Learn more about the Toys show at the Annmarie Sculpture Garden! This exhibit seeks works of art that use toys and children’s playthings as the inspiration, subject matter, and/or medium with the goal of creating playful, amusing, nostalgic, or poignant commentaries on the role of toys in our lives. Many of us hold fond memories of special toys that yielded hours of entertainment and can vividly remember when a treasured toy was lost, broken, stolen, or otherwise retired.

For these reasons and more, toys can be a powerful art medium, conjuring up both treasured and difficult memories of childhood, past friendships, and other recollections. From the utterly outrageous to the sappy and sentimental, this exhibit will include all media, small to large scale. The exhibit will be installed in the Main Gallery of the Arts Building, but a small number of outdoor works will be considered for the Sculpture Garden.  The jury seeks works that are engaging, and fun, and above all, playful!

ELIGIBILITY:  The exhibition is open to artists age 18 and older working in the U.S.

CHEESE!

I am frequently asked about my favorite foods, and of course, there are too many to name.  However, it would be fair to narrow it down Mediterranean food, Greek and Italian to be exact.  I could eat eggplant everyday, and if you add a little Parmigiano-Reggiano… I’m in heaven.  All this talk of Italian food makes me want to hand-deliver an entry to this next show.  How ’bout you?
