My Dad always loved to munch on raw potatoes when prepping them for some portion of a meal. No joking. Honestly, the only other being I know that loves raw potatoes is my dog Pepper. She loves them almost as much as cabbage and carrots. Her ultimate favorite was white grapes; then I learned they could lead to renal failure. (Apparently not many of you knew that either since no one responded when I wrote this post.) So, veggies it is, potatoes included. The saying “Man’s Best Friend” is a phrase that refers to the relationship between domestic dog and humans. Dogs are the most popular pet in the world; due mostly to their loyalty and companionship. They provide protection, unwaveringly love, laughter and joy. This Call for art is for images celebrating the wonderful companion we call dog.

ELIGIBILITY: Open to all artists

MEDIA: Wall-hung, 2 D art from photography to fabric, mixed media, all paintings and drawings including, oil, acrylic, ink, graphite, pastels, etc.

There are only so many hours in the day, and I can’t possibly keep up with every new cooking method, or you might never receive another Call from me again. I’ve also had to limit the number of art show invitations I accept for the same reason. This next Call will allow you to attend the opening regardless of WHERE you live or how much time you have. I am thrilled by the prospects of having chickens for eggs & goats for milk, but am I really dedicated to the biology of it all? SlowArt Productions presents the fourth, periodic group exhibition, Art Biologic. This exhibition will focus on art inspired by nature and biology. The exhibition will be held at the Limner Gallery from May 15 – June 14, 2014.

ELIGIBILITY:
All artists 18+

MEDIA: All art forms relating to, or gaining inspiration from nature and biology. All artist interpretations of the theme, from the realist to the abstract and conceptual, will be reviewed and considered.

DEADLINE: February 28, 2014

NOTIFICATION: By March 31, 2014

ENTRY FEE: $35 for up to 4, $5 ea add’l. Artists accepted to exhibit will not be charged additional fees of any kind. Payments may be by check or money order payable to SlowArt Productions, or by credit card using PayPal.

SALES: All works in the show must be for sale. The gallery will take a 30 % commission on all sales. Sale price is determined by the artist.

Isn’t it funny how certain seasons suddenly bring about the craving for very specific foods? It never occurs to most people to even think about fruitcake until we start seeing winter holiday decorations appear. My German in-laws (3rd generation via Wisconsin) save kuchen for Christmas. Kuchen is German & approximately translates to “cake,” but I know it as a sort of custard & jam filled sweet-dough, low-rise cake that screams Christmas. JUROR: John Rychtarik, a South Dakota native, received his B.S. in Art Education from Northern State University in Aberdeen, SD; and attended the University of South Dakota in Vermillion, SD. John then spent several years teaching art throughout South Dakota to students of all ages in public schools, South Dakota Arts Council programs, and Native American schools.

Rychtarik later transitioned into the museum field, where he worked for 35 years at the Robinson State Museum, the Siouxland Heritage Museums and the South Dakota Art Museum. During his 11.5 years as the Exhibitions Coordinator at the South Dakota Art Museum, he booked, organized, curated, and installed almost 150 exhibitions. John is also an artist himself. His work has been exhibited throughout South Dakota, including a solo exhibit at the Visual Arts Center of the Washington Pavilion.

AWARDS: $1,000 first place, $500 second place, $250 third place

I am slightly obsessed with the hunt for the perfect piece of land. My husband & I are determined that 2014 will be the year we finally build a house, but we can talk about that adventure later. Right now, I have to find the land. I need land that will both allow for a solar-efficient, south-facing house, but I also need a large enough plot to accommodate our offices, a studio, and a garden, of course–and cheap. I know. I’ve been searching for a new St. Valentine’s Day activity for years. Our tried ‘n’ true floor picnics with wine-steamed mussels went South when Jon developed an allergy to shellfish. We’ve been floundering since then. Usually we just revert to lamb chops and asparagus at home because we live in the 2nd most popular place to wed in the country. The Biennial Project is pleased to announce an open call to artists worldwide for Biennial Roadshow Marfa 2014 – an online juried competition and screen digital presentation.

Art will be presented as part of a giant screen digital display at The Biennial Roadshow Marfa 2014 Hoodang (that is a reception for you non-Texans) and Gala being held at world-renowned El Cosmico, the coolest gathering spot for trend-makers in the art-world Mecca of Marfa, Texas.

Now, you may ask…
Why Marfa, Texas?

It all started when the acclaimed minimalist artist Donald Judd left New York City in the 1970s for this dusty dot of a town. With the help of the DIA Foundation, Judd acquired an entire Army base, and before he died in 1994, he filled it with art, including light installations by Dan Flavin and Judd’s own signature boxes. Now it’s a whole creative community.

MEDIA: All media that can be captured in a still digital image

What do you want for dinner? I hate saying AND hearing this phrase because it is immediately followed by the shuffling of feet and avoidance of eye contact in the attempt to draw out the silence until my husband breaks the silence and makes the decision. It isn’t that I don’t want to think about it; clearly I think about food ALOT. However, I find it difficult to translate the abstract notion of what I want for dinner into the concrete dish that would be. Getting from idea that I want comfort food to identifying that as potato soup with freshly grated Romano is, well, complicated. I wonder if abstract painters have this same dilemma. OPEN CALL: Solo Project House

I prefer not to eat alone. It isn’t due to all the ridiculous social stigma attached because I dislike eating alone even at home. When I eat alone, I tend to get sucked into the idea of a gourmet meal which sounds fantastic but takes forever. In the middle of cooking, I break down and eat a “snack” (often the size of a meal) thereby insuring I won’t be hungry by the time dinner is ready to be eaten. James Prez, artist and independent curator, has created at least one piece per day since 1987. Works have been made utilizing photography, drawing, painting, sculpture, mixed-media, collage, montage, assemblage and frottage.

Lori Zimmer is a writer and curator who works actively in the art world on many facets. Aside from creating and writing Art Nerd New York, she also is the Art Editor for Inhabitat.com, “Art Seen” columnist for Patrick McMullan Magazine, and contributing writer for MutualArt, ArtFetch, art.sy, Flavorpill, WhiteHot, Creem and ArtSlant.

Nick Kline was born in 1968 in Spring Lake, NJ. He received his MFA from Cranbrook Academy of Art, Michigan in 1992 and a BFA from the University of the Arts in Philadelphia in 1990. He resides in New York, NY and is an Assistant Professor, Photography, Rutgers University-Newark. Kline’s work is represented by De La Cruz Projects, San Jose, Costa Rica.

AWARDS: All SPH 2014-15 selected Solo(s) will be matched with a Manhattan solo exhibition at sister space, S & J Project(s) located at 191 Henry St. New York, NY.
