SPRING greens

Sweet potato pie is a family favorite. As we head into fall and the the pumpkin-spice vs no-pumpin-spice debate rages on endlessly, I’m over hear making sweet potato pies from fall all the way into winter.  Sweet potatoes are available year ’round, take much less time to cook from scratch than sugar pumpkins and require far less added sugar.  I know you think you don’t like them, but try them.  Fall in love with them and you can be eating their beautiful orange goodness, from scratch instead of can, for the entire winter.

This next Call is centered around the mood and ambiance of winter and the work that it inspires.  Winter tends to be productive for me, but it often produces darker work, literally and metaphorically.  Are you affected by the change in the season?  This show’s call deadline is in September, so you’ll either need to pull work from last winter or predict the oncoming season.  If you’re looking for a museum show for your resume, investigate Marin MOCA, it is one of my favorites.

FLAVOR bombs

I’ve never been a fan of frozen green veggies.  The flavor often reminds me of those little peas in one-dollar pot pies, not entirely natural.  But there is a glaring exception.  Edamame.  I love those little beans.  I like them steamed in their pods, then dipped in a little dumpling sauce (thai chili paste & soy) then sucked from their little green shells.  It isn’t pretty, but I am hooked.

Another perienniel favorite that is all about the color is the BWAC color show.  This is a great space that has grown to become Brooklyn’s largest artist-run organization with over 250 members.  Your dollars have power; spend them wisely.  I love this organization & its mission.

COLD complication

The school year returns soon.  Many of you know I have a kid in college, so his impending exit will mark a change in my house like so many of you with students.  My grocery bill will shrink, and his eating habits will change.  At home, my son eats whatever is put in front of him.  At school, he can choose to fuel himself on pizza and coffee 6 out of 7 days.  I choose to believe not, but a quick glance at the bucks he spends on ‘bucks reveals the ugly truth… his degree will be sugar & caffeine-fueled.

What gets you through a work day?  Do you have a routine or a vice?  Is there a difference, or is the label just a way to guilt yourself into less-frequent indulgence?  After a hard day in the studio recently, I picked up my keys and headed out, making a quick pitstop in my husband’s studio to let him know I was going.  “I’m headed to the liquor store.  Want anything?” I asked.  “Day that good, huh?”  *blink blink blink* “How about I work on dinner while you’re gone?”  Smart man.  This next Call is for those of you whose memory of late night projects & exam cramming are still directly behind you.

When not traveling for exhibitions and projects, she is based in Northeast Wisconsin.

GREEN me up

I’ve always had a hankering for a rainbow assortment of foods, but my personal aesthetic has skewed black and white over the years.  I was the kid that wore black, my work concentrated on black and white images for nearly 20 years.  About 2 1/2 years ago, my work shifted, and color began to seep into what I had to say.  Once the dam sprung a leak, the flood waters came.  I did a complete media shift with more color than I can describe, occasionally venturing into neon territory.  Then I spent a month in Scotland.  I took all black clothing with a few colorful scarves and accessories just to simplify packing… 

But, Scotland.  It was awash with the most spectacular light, even when it was overcast.  My lasting impression is of vivid blues and greens.  My clothing became an issue.  I felt like I was wearing a black hole.  When my plane touched down in the U.S. again, one of my first stops was to buy a colorful shirt because I just couldn’t take the black anymore.  This next Call is all about color, and I have the perfect work to submit.  How about you?

I have a friend that is a competitive cyclist and one that owns a coffee cart that is powered by custom-built tricycles, meanwhile I can’t ride a bike or a trike, or at least I don’t think so.  It has been a long time since I tried.  My friend that rides long distances carries a small pack with water and snacks. I picked up the protein bars she recommended, assuming they would be of questionable taste and that the lack of TASTE would prevent me from eating them like candy bars.  FAIL.  They taste like coconut cookies — delicious.  Ahhh.  I’m trying to forgive her, ha.  

Today’s call is all about the bicycle.  I exhibited in this show last year, and the venue is beautiful.  My interpretation of bicycle was NOT literal, so I was pleased to receive an acceptance letter.  My work did not sell, but the returned work was well-packed and received in an appropriate amount of time.  The entry fee is low; there are cash awards, and the commission is standard.  I may enter again this year.  How about you?

Netflix & popcorn nights have accompanied my new revelation… the phrase “I had no choice” may be the most commonly uttered line written for television. We always have a choice.  The choice may be unthinkable, unspeakable and emotionally-devasting, but it is still a choice.  I have made glorious choices and horrific ones.  Those choices have allowed me to follow my heart and have fueled my creativity, but they have also created an unsustainable physical reality for me.  My body is betraying me; I’m not terminal, just infuriatingly chronic.

I have created bodies of work surounding how our bodies betray us.  But really, I made many of the choices.  So, thanks to Netflix #jokingnotjoking I am making new choices.  I am trying to gently strengthen my body and make healthier food choices.  Trying.  I love my life, and I’ve come to love the physicality of the figure I inhabit, so it is time to fight to keep it.  I’m not having a mid-life crisis or looking for immortality, I just want a chance to have a productive future.  I don’t think kale or avocado are miracle cures, but clean food & more movement have to be a start. Like I said, trying.

CALL for ENTRIES: Meltdown

lost in TRANSLATION

It is no secret that I’m a little, well, let’s call it cheese “focused”. But we all have our priorities.  After being seperated by an ocean for 4 weeks, my husband and I stopped by a local dairy farm less than 24 hours after reunited… to buy cheese. Priorities.  Cheese glorious cheese.  A few days later, I made summer squash au gratin also known as “squash makes all the melted cheese a legitimate choice”, au gratin for short.  Melted cheese means I’m home, ha.  Think of it as my oven’s welcome mat. It is the best kind of meltdown.

I have been known to indulge in an epic meltdown of a personal nature on occasion.  The last U.S. presidential election put me in an ugly place for weeks.  Every insuing attack on civil rights, environmental regulations, access to health insurance & the ability to govern the workings of my own body have warranted their own meltdowns.  My work has changed.  My life has changed.  I worry about becoming numb to the suffering of others, to the loss of agency, to the restrictions on the ability to speak freely.  Where is this planet’s population headed?  While I was in Scotland recently, I was regularly engaged by locals about American politics.  People want to understand what is going on in the United States.  I couldn’t explain.  I can’t explain.  So, I just keep working.  Right now, THAT is what I can do.

SPRING greens

It is time for my seasonal obsession with ginger. I love ginger all of the time; however, about 4 to 6 weeks at the beginning of Spring, I am obsessed.  I find ways to work it into every salad, entree & dessert.  My family just smiles & nods, knowing that the ship will right itself soon.  I think it happens because the weather has just warmed up enought to inspire thoughts of light and fresh fare, but our local harvest hasn’t quite made it to summertime bounty yet.  High-quality ginger is available year ’round, and content matters.

This next Call has a deadline just around the corner (sorry for that), and it meets my resume criteria for this year (museums, publicly-funded galleries, collections or libraries).  But the theme of “Content Matters” is what really pushed me to want to enter — achingly relevant. I am finishing a piece now that I think would be perfect, but, you know… jurors.  We’ll see.  If you are interested in a museum show and have work to offer, take a look at the details.

don’t paint with FISH SAUCE

Every week I manage to make a handful of Insta-worthy, perfectly staged lunches & dinners, completely by accident.  More often, I conjure tasty dishes that are weirdly, mostly shades of brown due to carmelization, excessive de-glazing and a love for soy, fish, Worchestershire & all other sauces, brown & salty.  As you might imagine, the brown food pics, outside of coffee & walnuts, aren’t really winners on social media, ha.  My work is not brown or salty, but similar & not…

A few times per week I manage to pull off a perfectly Insta-worthy image of my work in progress –always at an off-kilter angle with short focus to blur unresolved issues and just the right light to allow a contrast-y filter to make me look like a rock star.  It is deceptive and born out of equal measure of insecurity and social media pressure to look like I always have everything effortlessly under control.  I have guilt, but not.  I don’t like feeding into the notion that studio life needs to be glamourous, but I also don’t like exposing my vulnerability underbelly to nameless, faceless critics.  Then enters this Call.  As you might imagine, I read A LOT of Calls, and I like options for art publication.  But THIS call is different.  This call wants to see the mess.  Finally, there is an option to show studio life, work-in-progress specifically.  I think that this is the kind of aspirational we can feel good about –always real, likely messy & unresolved.  Seeing yourself represented as an artist is important.  This Call is the brainchild of one of our previously Featured Artists, Robyn Thompson.  It is a project of her course work while working toward her Master of Arts in Social Practice, making this a great opportunity to lift up ourselves AND one of our very own.

Your name, links to your work and a paragraph about your process will also be included. The publication will be available for free online and you will be able to order print copies at cost if you wish.

I did NOT eat haggis in Scotland while in residency.  No one offered it to me.  It wasn’t on any menu that I saw.  No one suggested that I should make or order it –except every person I know in the United States, ha. I did, however, give in to hot tea, drink liter after liter of unhomoginized, “gently pasteurized” local milk and ate a shameful number of all-butter Scottish shortbread biscuits.  I ate boatloads of Dutch gouda and an embarrassing amount of brie from the local cheese shop.  And the spinach quiche and sun-dried tomato bread from the local bakery was sinful.  You do Scotland your way, I did it mine.  The biggest news is how I approached my work differently…

I went to another continent, worked 80+ hours a week and came home with three small pieces of completed work.  I spent 8 solid hours of work on an area the size of a silver dollar.   I could NEVER do that at my home studio uninterrupted.  I spent thirty hours over 3 days working & re-working a 2″ x 4″ section of stitching. I could NEVER do that at my home studio without massive frustration.  Residency is the hardest thing to do.  It is undistracted, unobstructed time to experiment and succeed and fail without excuse (that’s the hard part).  Residency time is priceless.  THIS residency is a working residency that requires working with the public on a project.  If it lights you up, if you can envision the project and can’t wait to get started, please don’t miss this chance.  Don’t let doubt or all the things you think you need to be get in the way.  Just submit the project.  Don’t worry about what happens if they say “yes” or if they say “no”.  Take the chance because it could change the course of how you work and of how you approach your work forever.
