JUROR: Pauline Verbeek-Cowart, a native of the Netherlands, received her BFA (1982) in Fine Art from the Maryland Institute and her MFA in textile design from the University of Kansas (1995). After teaching at the University of Kansas she joined the faculty of the Kansas City Art Institute, where she has been developing the area of constructed textiles since 1997 and where she chairs the Fiber program. She is a leader in the use of new technologies in hand-weaving and has researched using industrial looms in The Netherlands & the US. Most of her weavings span several feet in both directions & comment on the nature of woven surfaces. Through structure, material, image and/or surface treatments, she demonstrates that weaving is unique in building an image.

AWARDS: Winifred V. Brown Best of Show: $1,000, 1st Place: $500, 2nd Place: $250, 3rd Place: $100, & (3) Honorable Mentions: $50 ea.

A monograph on her practice, ‘Abstract Figure: Gill Gatfield,’ was released at the 2013 International Sculpture Centre Symposium. Gatfield’s work blends abstraction with conceptualism, and contemporary with classical. Trans-disciplinary in approach, she uses diverse media to create interconnected series of texts, frames, and monochromes. I am fascinated by small food & small restaurants. There is something special about the smallest of goodies served in the smallest of places. One automatically assumes great care has been taken because you have less real estate literally & figuratively to make an impression. Sel et Gras in NYC was always on my list to try, but I heard it closed. Do you have any suggestions I should try? I suggest you take part in this next study in tiny art. Frequently, the most memorable kitchen creations are happy accidents. As much as I love a list, theme and a plan, sometimes I find myself in a situation that forces me to create a masterpiece from what I have on hand or try something new on the spur of the moment. My favorite chicken-cheddar-broccoli soup came about as a necessary use of what I could find in the frig. Now it is a winter menu staple in our house. The Arts & Culture Alliance of Greater Knoxville announces a call for entries for its National Juried Exhibition of 2015. The Arts & Culture Alliance’s National Juried Exhibition was developed to provide a forum for artists to compete on a national scale and display their work. Approximately 40-50 fine art works encompassing all styles and genres from both emerging and established artists will be selected by the juror, Stefanie Gerber Darr, for exhibition in the main gallery.

ELIGIBILITY: Artists 18+ living in the US

MEDIA: 2-D (painting, drawing, mixed media, printmaking, photography) & 3-D (sculpture of all media).

JUROR: Stefanie Gerber Darr combines her training as a museum educator, curator, collections manager and artist to develop meaningful experiences for people with art. Darr currently manages the galleries and permanent collection at Arrowmont School of Arts and Crafts and is focusing on raising the awareness of the school’s past, present and future.

JUROR: Lynda Schlosberg is a Boston-based abstract artist who creates intricate and process-oriented paintings that are constructed using a series of interwoven layers of meticulous repeating patterns of dots, dashes, and grids using highly saturated, vibrant and illusory colors. It is through her skillful utilization of color theory and pattern that she constructs spatial illusions that expand and recede simultaneously, when viewed, fully exercise the mind and the eye.

Schlosberg received her MFA from the Art Institute of Boston at Lesley University, and her BFA from Ohio University College of Art. She is represented by Susan Maasch Fine Art in Portland, ME and by Kingston Gallery in Boston. She has recently partnered with the non-profit Art in Giving. She maintains a studio in Waltham, MA.

SALES: All proceeds from art sales go to the artist. Gallery 263 acts as the liaison between the artist and any parties interested in purchasing artwork. However, they do suggest a 30% donation to the gallery from any sales made.

I never thought about what astronauts ate when I was little, but I was disturbed that all they had to drink was Tang–or so I thought, ha. Gone are the days of strictly canned or freeze-dried foods in space. Now, those travelers have fresh fruits, vegetables and even waffles and scones.
