SALES: A 25% commission will be retained on all sales. *Yosemite Renaissance is a non-profit organization for the arts of Yosemite, supported, in part, by funds & services from the Mariposa County Board of Supervisors, Delaware North Companies Parks & Resorts and the National Park Service.

While most of the world is obsessed with pumpkin-flavor, not actual pumpkin, I am reveling in the other winter squashes — butternut, acorn & patty pan. My farmers market sells these squash, in season, for $1 each. Split & roast one of each squash, scoop out the insides and puree through the food processor, add a little salt, pepper, garlic and a touch of curry or a few red pepper flakes, and the resulting squash soup is divine. It looks like baby food, but the flavor is unbelievable. I makes lunch for all three of us for at least two or three days. Squash, just squash. It’s a solo act, just like this next Call. My grocery bill is absurd. I’m not having dinners of foie gras & truffles. In fact, most of our meals are vegetable laden. I try to stop by the farmers market at my local apple orchard. This week, it was $25 for apples, onions, 4 sweet potatoes, 3 bell peppers & 2 eggplant. As you might imagine, I then proceeded to spend a fortune at the grocery store to supplement my farmers market finds. I have a family of only three people + my four-legged child. I buy in-season, cost-conscious items. I consider myself a master food shopper, and I can barely hang on to a healthy menu. My chicken stock has been a little off lately. I make chicken stock at least once a week, and I thought I was doing everything the same, but all the dishes I make with stock of been a little off as well. The chicken soup & casseroles & pasta dishes were all missing something. Peppercorns. I ran out of peppercorns and used fresh ground pepper in their place. JUROR: A native of the South Bronx, Dr. Leslie King-Hammond was educated in the New York City public education system. After attending City University of New York and Johns Hopkins University she began teaching art history at Maryland Institute College of Art (MICA). Later appointed Dean of Graduate Studies she retired in 2008 as Graduate Dean Emerita. During her storied career King-Hammond has served as the Founding Director of the new Center for Race and Culture at MICA, received a number of Mellon Grants, and a Trustee Award for Excellence in Teaching.
Other honors include the Reginald F. Lewis Museum of Maryland African American History & Culture’s Chairperson of the Board and Chairperson of the Collections and Exhibits Committee; appointment to the Board of the Creative Alliance for the Artists, Baltimore, MD.; and project director for Ford/Phillip Morris Fellowships for Artists of Color at MICA (including Yale School of Art, School of the Art Institute of Chicago, Cranbrook Academy of Art, and California Institute of the Arts).

AWARDS: MTSU Arts Award $1,000, Dean’s Award $500, Department of Art Award $200, Award of Excellence $100, Up to 3 Awards of Merit $50 each.

The sight of a train trestle always conjures my cravings for hot chocolate. My entire life has been spent in residence within about a half-mile of railroad road tracks. I loved sitting on my front porch in the Fall with a cup of hot chocolate and listen to the trains pass. That all ended when I moved to Gatlinburg. CURATOR: Mona Kuhn is best known for her large-scale, dream-like photographs of the human form. Her work often reference classical themes with a light and insightful touch. Kuhn was born in São Paulo, Brazil, in 1969, of German descent. She received her BA from The Ohio State University, before furthering her studies at the San Francisco Art Institute in 1996. She is currently an independent scholar at The Getty Research Institute in Los Angeles.

AWARDS: The number of billboards will vary depending on the number of submissions received, the availability of viable billboards & current market prices for those billboards. Viable billboards mean that they exist in well-traveled (car and foot traffic) locations. All billboards will include the artist’s name. The website will have images of each selected work, the artist’s name and a link to their website.

My kitchen smells of heavenly green cardamom. It IS expensive, and I AM cheap. But, I never regret the purchase. I offset the expense by buying it ground instead of in the pod. It loses flavor quickly when you store it ground, but cardamom is used in a huge number of cultures for dishes both sweet & savory. It is a staple of Indian & Thai foods, but it is also found in Nordic breads & sweet treats. You will love what cardamom will do for rice pudding or hot tea. At the State Museum, she has organized over 90 exhibitions. O’Reilly received her MA in painting from Kean University, and her work has been included in numerous exhibitions in the region. Her research and exhibition interests echo those found in her own creative output and include issues of chance, identity and mortality, among others, while the formal qualities of particular interest are density, repetition and serial structure.

AWARDS: The Special Exhibitions Committee Award is a solo exhibition at The Center for Contemporary Art. 1st Prize $500, 2nd Prize $250 & 3rd Prize $100.
