Aside from an occasional banana or orange, most of my fruit experiences as a kid were of the fruit cocktail variety. But as an adult, I have come to appreciate the singular special-ness of fruit on its own. I almost (just almost) prefer it to chocolate. ENTRY FEE: €40 ($42 USD approx.)

JURORS: Leila Topić works as a curator in Zagreb’s Museum of Contemporary Art (MSU), in charge of three collections: film and video, photography & media art.

Tevž Logar currently works as an independent curator and collaborates with different institutions and galleries. Between 2009 and 2014 he worked as artistic director of Škuc Gallery in Ljubljana, Slovenia. Zorana Đaković Minniti works in the Cultural Centre of Belgrade as coordinator for the international cooperation and program coordinator of Podroom gallery within same institution.

AWARDS: 1st prize €3,000 ($3165 USD approx) & 2nd Prize is €1,000 ($1055 USD approx). Plus, the jury will select 18 artists to exhibit the submitted works in an art gallery of a European city from June 1-14, 2017.

Sleep is not my friend. As a lifelong insomniac, and I have tried EVERY remedy –prescription, herbal, oils, sounds, aroma. Lack of sleep promotes depression. For me, depression often takes the form of extended weeks or months of “the blues” marked by an remarkable lethargy and a sort of emotional paralysis. It is more common in winter, so I am actively combating insomnia every February. This year, I am having moderate success by not snacking late at night (my apologies to the massive hit sustained by the popcorn industry) & getting half an hour of moderate exercise each morning. Creativity is the ultimate therapy & this next Call is a great chance to work out some pent up “blues”. Investigate….

Citrus & avocados just became an option again. For years, my family has been considering locations for relocating, mostly in the eastern U.S., north of the Tennessee/Virginia line. But after our years of circling the same section of the map, an opportunity much closer to the equator has presented itself. While I should be concentrating on finding a place to live and all the details that follow, all I can think about is mangoes and avocados, and option I never imagined possible. The galleries choose freely and autonomously their own winners and are just required to select artists with whom they had never had previous work relationships. Exhibits will open in the 2017-2018 season.

I lamented to a friend about my having to buy frozen dinners to supplement my child’s homemade options due to scheduling conflicts, and that session of whining spun off into a whole other discussion about why we quit calling them “TV dinners”. My friend optimistically believes it is because people, generally speaking eat in front of the TV less often.
