“Zo ben ik steeds zoekende naar nieuwe onderwerpen,
verschillende technieken, altijd weer anders.
Soms verrassend, soms helemaal niets.” —
Patricia Derks

(So I’m always looking for new subjects, different techniques, always
different.
Sometimes surprising, sometimes nothing at all.)

Today’s AAAD Artist of the Day, Patricia Derks, has a way with color that conveys more than the subject, or artist, seems to intend the view to see.  Today, “Orange Dream” said, “I see you. Me too.”  What does her work say to you?

gray DAYS

Cold weather can be lovely –in its season. But I crave blue skies. I get a few during winter’s grip; however, as March marches forward, I am growing intolerant of the gray days. My optimistic nature makes me want to find the beauty in the gray.  Imagine my delight to find the work of today’s AAAD Artist of the Day, Barbara Witkowska with all his glorious shades of gray. beautiful EXISTENCE

I try to live transparently. I have no illusions about online safety or personal privacy.  As a result, it is fairly easy to find out anything you could ever want to know about me.  I find it peaceful, really (the not hiding of it all).  There ARE days however when my want to be transparent gives way to discomfort of perceived invisibility –both physical, artistic & emotional.  Today’s AAAD Artist of the Day, Cristina Troufa questions and explores the self as other through an extraordinary series of self-portraits.   (continues below)

another LANGUAGE

Process can be such an immersive experience.  My own work is focused, often figurative with meaning in the minutia.  I get lost in my own process, but I envy the abstracted expression of painters like S.L. Baker, today’s Artist of the DayThe inclusion of the ensō below perfectly captures the heart of this work and why I love it. (continues below)

“The work that appears on my canvases is a confluence of social, spiritual and familial concern.  Working mostly in acrylic and using my hands instead of brushes, a moment, an injustice, a joy becomes a color, a texture, a line, another language. I do not know the exact meaning other than I find gratitude within the process and believe that it says something.” — S.L. Baker

you too

Only a very small handful of my friends will abide long debates about varietal olive oils.  My favorite varietal is made from Frantoio olives. Frantoio olives are widely used in Tuscan olive oils–peppery and bitter and pungent and a bit grassy.  Just a few of my food freaky friends will stick around for these debates because we are peas in a pod.  This next Call is for peas of the painting pod.  Take a look…

KEIRCE pursued a corporate career while building a business painting commissions—found in private collections the world over. Keirce then focused on galleries & museums. Drawn to small format, she began accumulating awards. She prefers urban landscapes & still life with a Trompe L’Oeil & photo-realism influence. Keirce paints, “colors & shapes with little or no regard to the entire subject until the very end of the painting process. One of the joys of painting is being surprised by the hyper realistic compositions that evolve from a very abstract, emotional creative zone.”

Monotype
We carry unseen struggles. TSAROS gives form to the internal life in paint. Bringing emotional and spiritual states to light are more important to me than depicting any physical likeness.

Her current series, Bigger Spirits/Square Souls, features organic forms that dance, float or slowly ebb with life. Through paint and monotype, the shapes and marks in the images recall spirits; forces that carry us through our days or challenge us mightily.
