JUROR:  Kyle Staver received her MFA in painting from Yale School of Art, and has exhibited throughout the United States. She has been a recipient of the Guggenheim Memorial Foundation Fellowship (2015) and the American Academy of Arts and Letters Purchase Prize (2015). Her work has been exhibited at Pennsylvania College of Art & Design, Steven Harvey Fine Art Projects, and the American Academy of Arts & Letters. She currently exhibits at Kent Fine Art in New York, and lives in Brooklyn.

SALES:  All work will be for sale unless artist states otherwise. All proceeds go to the artist.

My father deluded himself into the notion that a seven year old was the target audience for this studded meat product.  I survived.  I love olives, and fresh peppercorns make my stock & dressings sing. I hear the words, “the food landscape is changing” with ridiculous frequency amongst my foodie friends.  I want to believe it is just that sunny optimism that I seek out in others, not naivete, that makes them spout this feel-good mantra.  I believe in locally-sourced, sustainably-farmed, whole foods.  And given an affordable option, I believe most people would agree.  But, have you seen/heard the commercial wherein MONSANTO says they want you to “be a part of the conversation”?  You know, the company that brought you Agent Orange, PCBs, aspartame, bovine growth hormone.  Be afraid of THAT landscape.  This next Landscape, however, is of a delightful variety–to be LOVED.  Take a look…

Challenging the myth that cutting edge art is created only by young artists, The Haggus Society & Julie Montenegro State Farm, are hosting Edges & Curves 4.

ELIGIBILITY:  Open to artists age 40+

MEDIA:  2D art (no larger than 32″ x 44″) & small 3D art (no larger than 14″ x 10″ x 8″)

DEADLINE:  June 1, 2015

NOTIFICATION:  June 5, 2015

ENTRY FEE:  $12.50 for non-members. No entry fee for Hags.

JUROR:  Terri Lloyd is a San Francisco Bay Area transplant who has called Los Angeles home since 1980.  Under the influence of a Sixties latch-key-kid youth, the circumstances of a working class life did not provide the conventional means to an art education or experience.  Introduced to the Apple computer in the 1980s, a love affair with digital technology was born.  Lloyd’s career has been a two-pronged path between fine & commercial arts.

In 2010, Lloyd retired from the commercial arts path to pursue a lifelong interest of fine arts.  She continues to become more active as a leader in community arts organizations and activities.  When not working in the studio, Lloyd runs The Haggus Society, a feminist art collective for women over the age of 40.

SALES:  The Haggus Society does not automatically take a commission; however, a small donation in the event of sales would be appreciated.  Please include this in your pricing.  If a work is not for sale please indicate with NFS.

*Just one other note.  I showed work in the first Edges & Curves exhibit after meeting Terri Lloyd through the Featured Artist contest.  Since then, I have found a community of creatives I love and enjoyed benefit of a solo show in L.A.  Now I am a lifetime member, AND they are lifetime sponsors of this site.  I can’t imagine not having these folks as a part of my creative life.  It is amazing what $12.50 can do.

All I want for my birthday is a biscuit.  My birthday is June 6th.  On Christmas Day, I made my birthday request of my mother.  She’s the best biscuit-maker I know, my husband being a close 2nd, but neither of them has yet to master a gluten-free biscuit.  I can only hope one of them figures it out.  It is the only gluten-laden food I miss.  And, in a cruel twist of fate, this Call is in my backyard.  I can’t bear the thought, so please, someone make me proud…

I plan a Kentucky Derby party each year, well, abstractly speaking.  The party never actually happens, but my intentions are always good.  I dream of andouille sausage  with black-eyed peas and lobster with truffle oil. But in the end, I remember that mint juleps don’t require a party and excuse myself from the planning.  I recommend a small amount of planning for the next Call, at least abstractly…
